    I love John's take on Altman. I've always wondered what bothered me about his style whether it was Nashville, The Long Goodbye or California Split. He was too busy impressing how clever he was instead of telling the story. This shows balls to take down some of the most sacred cows of Hollywood from a great director.

    The summer of 1982. Spielberg releases a movie about aliens and once again directs the highest grossing film in history. Universal is so happy wit him, they give him a slice of the Universal slot and build him a very nice 2 story building all his own for 4 million dollars. E.T. becomes one of the most beloved characters in cinema history.. Later that summer, Universal releases THE THING directed by John Carpenter starring Kurt Russell. It's a bomb and loses a fortune. Carpenter has a long term contract with Universal which they immediately cancel. Now I really like THE THING, i THINK IT'S A MASTERPIECE OF SCI FI HORROR. But Hollywood backs winners and if you're not a winner, you better at least be pleasant and not criticize others. It's bad form. Carpenter is talented for sure, but he's always had a big mouth. He's his own worst enemy. Steven's not just a better filmmaker than Carpenter, he's a lot better at industry politics.

    John's pretty edgy, not bowing down to what a studio may want. Terry Gilliam is the same way. They both have made some timeless classics, but they could have done more if they just would have bended a bit. I admire the director who can walk the fine line between mass appeal and true art, like Guillermo Del Toro. Some of his films feel like indies, others are built for mass appeal.

    • @88feji
      @88feji Місяць тому

      So what if Schindler's List is an acclaimed movie ? Didn't you hear him ... Carpenter already said he does not care if the director's work is acclaimed by other people, he does not care about acclaims, he speaks his own mind and would not try to conform to popular opinions. And Schindler's List was not made at that point, so it does not mean Carpenter would not change his mind later ... Carpenter do not need an ego check, he's just being honest, and his stature has only grown in recent years due to The Thing and many of his other movies growing in importance especially being considered one of the top 5 sci fi horror movies of all time ...
