    Definitely make sure your art is relatable and people can understand it. I knew a woman who was homeless and did paintings and I would say she was good. But her paintings would be of the sun, stars and really anything nature but she would do it in such a way, you couldn't tell what it was that she painted. I guess she was going for the abstract type of work but it wasn't very good abstract. And I felt bad for her because she was trying to get off the street and she'd only charge $20, had over 1k fb friends but wasn't really selling. I'd say of the 50 paintings she might sell one or two. I think I saw one or two that I liked but didn't have the money to buy but I was happy when she did get a buyer. Anyway, wherever she is, I hope things have gotten much better for her.

    Thanks for sharing that story. I've had problems with art students/teachers since my undergrad years. When classroom critiques would happen, people would side with their friends in their little clique, and ignore me. But one week, the teacher brought in a group of graduate students from the program to critique us young ones, grad students who didn't know us, and were not invested in the politics, and everyone in the class got ripped to shreds except me. I'll never forget what that did for my confidence. Sometimes you just need a second opinion. Later on, in a graduate program, I took a photography course and argued with a professor about my technique, and the disagreement was so severe I actually dropped the class. But I kept taking photos in that same style and later that semester submitted one to a photography contest for a British magazine, and won a spot in the pages. Most people in today's world just can't see past the end of their nose. Don't take it too hard, they do not know what they are missing.

    When someone directly, and forcefully, opposes you, it’s extremely emotionally upsetting. Why would anyone do this? This is the only question that occupies your mind at times like this. Why would anyone do this? The only thing I can think of is envy. Some people feel threatened just by the positive energy, and enthusiasm, you emit. They can’t do it, because it’s not really their true path; so they haven’t been equipped to handle it. (Well, if it’s hard for me, it’s going to be impossible for this person; I’ll see to that)… this seems to be their attitude. But, the thing is, that the rejection is more about the person opposing you, and less about your talents, and abilities. I have encountered such experiences; but I have never let negative opposition prevent me from pursuing my path. If you listen to the advice of such people, it will take you further away from your true path. Looking back, I can see, had I followed the advice of some well meaning, but wrong, individuals… I would have never have achieved, what I achieved. Hindsight, as events unfold, confirms that your decision was correct , and this gives you more confidence in yourself. This is the benefit of experience; turning negative situations into positive outcomes. You appear to have experience. I like your videos… as you suggest, I can resonate with them, so I shared my thoughts here. Thank you.

    I've been going hard at this for nearly two years, on every platform from Saatchi to having my own website, getting representation at three different galleries, getting wonderful written reviews and tons of compliments, awards, etc.. But in the end, I have had only two small sales which barely covers the cost of one canvas. Marketing on your own is (sorry for my French) F*cking impossible. I know artists with social media followings in the hundreds of thousands and even they complain that marketing on your own hardly works at all. So although this video may try to be helpful, it is not. There is no formula, there is no guarantee, there is no proven way to be successful unless you get lucky or sell nudes. I love painting more than life itself, but selling it is an absolute mystery. I'm tired of being lectured when none of these 'techniques' work.

    Its a decision of being an artist or salesman. Getting traffic and trying to reach more clients are harder than making arts and boring. Sales requires efforts and effort is rewarded. In that point reward is etsy commisions. I do both for 2 years and still etsy make sales more than myself. Only if you have great social media network on instagram or facebook or youtube. Yes you are right, self selling is better.

    I notice that some really good representational art artists focus on their branding more than their product. They market through all the platforms and also offer workshops , instructional videos and merch. They sell their art via traditional venues as well from their web site and other platforms. For them , it is a business first. The artists that l like have always attracted me with their art but my long term interest with their branding. As an artist myself l have purchased some streaming , process ,instructional videos which have been beneficial to my growth. Although they are great artists l would hazard to guess that they generate more income in branding as opposed to painting sales.

      Yes all businesses have expenses and overheads but here I am not referring to expenses, I’m referring to profit. Profit from the price of your works sold - 100% going into your business and not shared with another 👍

    This is gold! Truly useful content for artist. It is difficult to make a business of something that comes from self-expression. I think artists struggle because they can’t decide if they want to have a business or not. A business involves more than one party. You need customers and you have to consider their wants and desires if you want to stay in business and thrive. That can be hard for us. But, it is really rewarding when you have that connection with people and they love your work enough to make it their own.

    One piece of advice that was given to me by an artist who lives off of commissions is ‘don’t even entertain the prospect of doing commissions until your art brand is established.’ She explained that the reason she does commissions now is because she is trapped. She decided to accept them early in her career and now she’s stuck painting photorealistic portraits of children at barely above break even prices for people who knit-pick her work and complain about the prices because, unfortunately, that became what the public identified her with despite the fact that her real style and preferred subject is completely different.

    I have been selling my works on Ebay for 15 years and things have not gone bad. In fact I have a power seller and in the Cuban art category I am the one that has sold the most and I continue to sell. I have gotten used to this platform and now everyone knows me through it, I also have my page on Wix, but I sell more on Ebay. It is my only source of income. It's a matter of perseverance and dedication that creates your brand. Since they know me from Ebay, they also search for me on Google and find my personal art page. I believe that platforms that have a lot of traffic help artists unintentionally create traffic towards their personal niche.

    This was valuable information. Detaching from your work is crucial to selling work. I think it is also good to pretend to be a person who wants to buy your work and think of the steps you would have to go through to purchase it.

    This is bad advice. This is what galleries tell artists to keep them broke and needy. A wide price range is the way to go if you want consent sales. If a high-end client client wants to pay big bucks for one of your originals, they will not even ask if someone has a cheap print somewhere. I have sold cheap prints and expensive paintings to the same clients. Remember even the extremely rich will go through a drivethrough. 😂

    • @marthamayronson
      @marthamayronson 2 місяці тому

      Galleries wouldn’t want artists to be broke because that would make the gallery broke. It doesn’t matter where people eat, food isn’t an investment whereas art is.

    Depends if one goes through one of these low cost mass-market outfits or goes through a high quality printer. I have been using a local boutique printer for fine art prints. Not all the mugs etc. Using a superior printing process for archival rated prints. I offer prints as another price-point. There is still only 1 original of each of my paintings.
