Dusky Turtle Dove Streptopelia lugens | African Highland Forest and Woodland Pigeons
The Dusky Turtle Dove: An Elegant High Elevation Dove
The Dusky Turtle Dove is a medium-sized dove, measuring about 11-12 inches in length. It is easily recognisable by its dusky grey-brown plumage, distinctive dark collar on the back of the neck, and pale underparts. The bird's subtle yet striking appearance makes it a beautiful subject for bird photographers. Its soft, cooing calls add a peaceful soundtrack to the serene environment of Mount Elgon.
Habitat and Distribution
In Kenya, the Dusky Turtle Dove is commonly found in montane forests, highland woodlands, and cultivated areas. Mount Elgon National Park, with its diverse habitats ranging from bamboo forests to afro-alpine moorlands, provides an ideal environment for these birds. Birdwatchers can often spot Dusky Turtle Doves perched on branches or foraging on the ground for seeds and grains.
Behavior and Diet
Dusky Turtle Doves are primarily granivorous, feeding on a variety of seeds, grains, and fruits. They are often seen foraging on the ground or perching quietly in trees. These doves are known for their gentle and calm demeanor, making them relatively easy to observe and photograph. Their soft cooing calls are a characteristic sound in their habitats, especially during the early morning and late afternoon.
