All about digital alterations of PDF sewing patterns for projector sewing! I use Inkscape and Gimp currently and may add more software as I go along.
General sewing, serging and coverstitching, threading of sewing machines and sergers, projector specific sewing, video editing, Inkscape and GIMP tutorials can happen without any schedule even while I'd love to make one each week ;)

How to put needle thread in a sewing machine: complete guide
Learn how to thread the sewing machine with confidence, from the first time and without any "but why?.." moments. My machine is Janome Dresscode, but they aren't much different as far as the needle thread is concerned (it's more complicated for the bobbin (bottom) thread.
In this tutorial I'm showing in detail how to use the needle threader, how to handle thread (you might call it cotton but these days it's mostly polyester), step by step, and in less than 7 minutes.
If you still haven't managed to learn after this tutorial, tell me about it :) Also tell me if you do.

How to clean and oil an overlock (serger) machine | Juki 654de
Переглядів 1,3 тис.6 місяців тому
Cleaning of sewing tech is necessary, a bit dusty, but can also be very rewarding. I use Juki mo654DE overlocker (serger) to demonstrate brushing, vacuuming and oiling. Cleaning is an essential part of the maintenance process, and you should never oil a dirty machine as this will do more harm than good. Overlock machines create a lot of lint with every stitch, and that's fine. Just clean them o...
Full bicep adjustment (for a sewing pattern) in Inkscape

Dividing curved seams | Inkscape for (projector) sewing patterns
Переглядів 1159 місяців тому
'Divide the opening into fourths and pin...' is a common instruction in sewing, and most of the time 4 is generous, and you need 8, and that's a lot of folding and matching. Even worse if you have to match something unstretched, like a neckline, to something stretched, like a band or elastic. This tutorial will get you covered! A little, since I show the technique on an underwear pattern, but i...
Warm and cozy split collar neck with buttons: how to draft and make
Переглядів 749 місяців тому
I just love warm cozy collars but overheat easily, so having a fastener is always welcome. This collar is very easy to draft in FreeCAD, even if you opened it for the first time, and requires minimal polishing in Inkscape (I turn the pattern piece to have the vertical grainline). *Written instructions* In technical terms, we generate a truncated Cone in Part workbench of FreeCAD, then move to M...
Easily stunning overlapped collar! Inkscape drafting (and sewing)
Переглядів 1409 місяців тому
This is my new favourite warm collar: cozy, hugging but not tight, not hard to pull over the head, doesn't require any fasteners. The one in the thumbnail is sewn into quite wide opening, so still on the floppier side, but the red one I sew in the end of the video is more snug. You will need to add both width and the depth to the neckline to use this collar, don't try it with the standard crew ...

Trace a sewing pattern with Inkscape | Easy and precise

Trace sewing patterns in Inkscape precisely and quickly with Bezier curves. Suitable for raster or vector sources (or even vectorize from paper, if you project Inkscape over the paper), use it for size blending, pattern adjustments, historical sewing patterns and more. To Say Nothing of the Pockets: Adding necessities to a skirt

This video is both a status report (you might not know this but I'm Ukrainian living in Ukraine. I'm fine, thank you :) ) and a sewing/Inkscape tutorial. I'm limited in my resources, no sewing machines around, so it's a handsewing project, adding gathered patch pockets with bound openings to an existing skirt. Good video.
How can I slow down the audio/video ? I can’t grasp the info that quickly
Check the settings at the bottom right of the video. It looks like a little gear wheel. You can play it at a slower rate.
I've just found your videos. Awsome! Thank you very much!!
Glad you like them!
❤❤❤
I just came across your UA-cam video. May I know what software do you use to draw the shirt pattern? is it GIMP or adobe illustrator or inkscape? I only know how to draw patterns using adobe illustrator and am trying to use inkscape 😊😊
Oh, I don't design patterns, this one is made by Jo Mina, a German designer. I know people make patterns in Illustrator, Inkscape, Affinity Designer, so if you know one, you can adapt to another too. Look at @SunnyMountainPatterns videos, and possibly ask for more sources, as she has designed patterns herself in the past.
@@TechieSewing oh okay
Excellent I subscribe
Thank you for watching, and happy serging :)
Thanks so much. You just helped me to solve my problem. I wanted to create a line with oppositely pointed arrows from some particular point on that line.
Glad it's helpful :)
Please use a soft bristle clean toothbrush to dust off the lint. Use a silicone spray lubricant to spray the joints and oil as per the manual. Silicone spray is safe to be used on plastics, works on plastics, doesn't leave any residue, and works even after it is completely dry.
I'm using the manufacturer recommended and provided tools and supplies. Please stop spreading bad advice on my channel :)

Great! Happy serging :)

BEST demo!!! Ive tried others with no success. Thank you so much, first time success:)
Thanks, I appreciate the comment :)
This is exactly what I need to do, but no matter how often I watch your video, I still haven't been able to do it. I get totally confused. The pattern that I have has a diagram showing how it should be layed out to save fabric, but the actual pdf file shows the pieces layed out so it would require wider fabric, even though the designer tells me the exact width that is to be used.
Thank you for making these videos. I just bought a projector. Getting that to work was easy compared to learning Inkscape but I'm getting better by watching.
Glad to help! Come back with questions, here or on Discord :)
Can I sew vinyl on my 5 thread serger?
No idea; never worked with vinyl.
Hi.Great Job thank
Thanks :)
😬 'Promosm'
What?
Nice video !
Thanks!
So exiciting! It's downloading in the background right now.
Yeah, I haven't thought about it myself, but with layers more people would just project from Inkscape, changing the colours and rotating the canvas on the fly. I'll install Inkscape to my projecting pi too.
"I'd like to see a blend of those two features we could select objects by drawing around" The way I did the node lasso is I deleted all the node selection code, and made the object selection code do both. I did this so they would have the same functionality. It should actually work the same, if you disable the touch-path option in the toolbar you should then get the lasso-object feature you want. But please let me know if it doesn't work!
Awesome video Marta, thank you so much for the shout out too ❤
No, they don't work the same, or I wouldn't have to do montage :) I've tried just now and it only selects touched objects regardless of that option in the toolbar being checked or not.
@@doctormo My pleasure :)
Lots of neat new features, thanks for sharing!
Yeah, I really like this one!
Thanks for the review. I already really liked Inkscape, but I love this version.
Glad you like it! I love the new version too :)
you can also click and drag to turn the line into a curve (dragging changes the radius and angle of the curve)
Yes, that's what I do throughout the video?
What kind of snapping do you use? I do this kind of tracing but without snapping
All snapping options on, except for: * perpendicular; * tangential; * both Alignment options I only change these if I need perpendicular or tangential, otherwise I just switch it on and off as needed.
how do you make the patterns before? which program do you use?
I didn't make the pattern, is available commercially (but this one is free). Pattern designers use different programs: Inkscape, Illustrator, Affinity Designer, specialised drafting software like Wild Ginger, or opensourse like Seemly2D and Valentina.
Thank you for taking the time to make this tutorial! Much appreciated.
Thank you too! Comments like this one keep me going :)
Finally! A quick easy video to help with my Singer Pro 5! Thank you so much 😊😊

how i can save a sewing pattern in DXF format?
With File>Save as?
Super... very useful vedio....
Glad it helps :)
If it were really broken, could one be printed in 3D?
I doubt that, it has to be quite thin and plastic that thin won't last. They are also quite cheap, like about $1.5.
thanks so much for your good channel. after assembling A4 pdf to A0, I need to arrange pattern pieces ( for example back, front,...) in a document paper size with a maximum 100 cm height in coordination with publishing machine also preventing waste paper. would you please guide me
You can set the paper size in File>Document properties. You can set the desk colour there too, to be able to see the page borders. I think I show in this video how to select sizes and move them to a separate layer and unfold. It is not always possible depending on how a particular pattern was made, but usually it is. These days I use PDFStitcher to assemble patterns though, it's a separate software that does that in a semi-automatic way.
For us scale model builders this is a useful and handy solution too, so not just for sewing patterns!
Good, good :)
Did not work. Breaking apart the paths didn't do anything. No matter which nodes are selected the same measurement is given, which means it's probably wrong
That's odd. Come to Discord, show me screenshots/screen recording, and we'll diagnose the problem.
This is the only video I've seen on the subject that explains how to do this, and does so clearly. I had a completely different need for measuring a curved path other than a pattern and it worked perfectly! Thank you!
Glad to help! I've learned quite a lot from unrelated tutorials myself too :)
Thank you , it was so hard for me to see in it 👌🏼
Hope this helped you to thread the machine easier :)
Thank you - going to try this in affinity designer as I have a friend who needs this adjustment. I do like Inkscape but find it not stable and crashes quite a lot which is frustrating. I think it is probably my Mac that is causing the problems. X
You should be able to adapt the tutorial to Designer :) Look at tutorials by ProjectorSewing too, I saw one about new Knife tool if you got Designer 2: ua-cam.com/video/RDvkJKRyiO0/v-deo.html . I haven't watched it but it's there :) Inkscape developers are working on improving Mac performance this year as before no developers had Mac computers to test on. They are thankful for crash reports too but that's a bit involved process :)
Hey Martha, you told me you will do the knock knee adjusment in inkscape please 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 🥺
Yeah, I'm good at promising things. With both air raid sirens and now long power cuts, I'm struggling to even edit a video I have most of material done for already. That's going to be size blending one. But I think knock knee is an easy one (I don't really remember, but isn't it just moving both an inseam and outseam in the same direction?), if you know your way around Inkscape already, I could do a screen record without commentary for you in Discord.
Yes I know about walking the seam but what a brilliant way to do it! I'm having trouble breaking my path (it just won't) so I may try to walk it with the entire short sleeve? or project and measure
Thanks, I've adapted the technique after seeing it in a video about another software. Took some experimenting as it's done differently in Inkscape. Using the whole sleeve should be totally fine too. I measure with headphones wire when I must measure by hand, and then pinch the end and hold it against my cutting mat edge. That's the only remotely precise method I can accomplish, so I prefer to rely on Inkscape. But why can't you break the path? It's probably grouped or clipped. The Status bar in the bottom should tell you if that's a group, you'd need to ungroup until it's Path because most Path operations will only work on Paths.
@@TechieSewing I gave up for now on the pattern i was trying and moved to another - it has many fewer nodes and I was able to quickly copy and measure the path. So it may not have been me!
@@thecpikas Some patterns are a pain, that's true. But you could come to Discord and share screenshots if you want, much easier to troubleshoot there. Or I think so by the experience of other servers as there next to none people in mine ;)
I'm only getting a chance to work through these now but they are so helpful. Thank you so much! I love being thrifty with my fabric.
Me too! Glad my videos are helpful and thank you ^_^
