20 Minute TVR Sports Car Rebuild
Переглядів 12 тис.3 роки тому
An edit of my other 3 videos into 1 without my presenting skills ruining it! It's a body-off replacement of rusty outrigger chassis (frame) sections on a TVR Chimaera. Not a full rebuild but the best that can be done without a full restoration. This rover v8 engined sports car was built in 1993, so it's actually done pretty well for its age! In may ways it was the british Chevrolet Corvette. Th...

Technical content please. How to do this and that
Videos of dogs helping build the business please!
Copart Lied lol they always lie. They are a business to make money, not for you to make money.
Marvelous job!!!
I was just about to say there is something wrong with that car when there wasn't an engine check light, but it lit up at the end, so all is ok. And before you jump calling me Audi hater - i have that exact generation of S6 with the same V8 and an A6 with a 2.7Bi-turbo... Engine check light on Audi is there to let you know everything is fine... If it's not on, then you should worry. If it starts flashing, then you should really really worry.
😱🫢🫣🤫
Really looking forward to this series and nice to be here early.
Low volts are the devil
Yep. Always the battery is the first thing to check with any module/sensor/switch issues on a modern car.
Good ole reliable timing belt Audi 4.2 things last for hundreds and hundreds of thousands of miles, and in a big C5 Avant. In the US we didn't get those heavy bolstered recaros, just sport seats. Car looks like it will be a amazing daily driver for you or anyone that plans to buy it from you. I'd suggest a transmission fluid and filter change as something on the top of your list. That little (well quite big at 320lbs compared to the 6 speed 01E weighing 160lbs) ZF5HP19 needs good maintenance. Looks great! Good color combo aswell.
Thank you! It looks really sorry for itself now but it'll be a great car! Half tempted to manual swap it but time and effort...
I would like to see the transformation of the car 👍🏼
I'll do my best to film and edit it (YouTubing takes a lot of time)
I always feel its a great shame that these wonderful machines fall into the hands of people that just don't appreciate them for what they are. The thought of just stapling the headliner because it was sagging is such a bodge job.
The headlining thing I can forgive as a temporary measure, it does mean I have to source a whole load of matching alcantara now though.
I’ve got a 1997 chimaera, that need some work. What area are you in?
I'm just outside Fernhurst, Surrey. Transport can be arranged and also near a direct train to Waterloo.
If I remember right I think those are VW beetle tail lights. A few have fitted them to Javelins.
Correct! I'm going back to standard
@@Howatengineering original looks far better.
Can you do mine please? Where are you?
I'm actually opening a new workshop later this year (after a few years off) in the south east of England, so yea... I can!
Really efficient work - you made it look easy! Good facilities must help though. How was the car to drive after you finished? Did it align ok? Do you still have the car?
This was for a customer in my old workshop. Alignment was perfect as I positioned the chassis mounts with the body in place.
Nice work, done this more than a few times over the last 50 years...
Yes I got pretty efficient doing them in the end! 6 hours for body off, under 60 hours for a full body off chassis refurb. Used to be able to do one in under 2 weeks. I miss having a workshop
You are wasting your time mashing the accelerator... there are no pumps on Javelin carbs.
Thanks for the info! The only mechanicals I've looked into on this are the bits I'm keeping.
This looks great... was the surface rust removed or treated before painting?
Yes it was either new metal or taken back to bare metal, then all coated
Good work, i used a jig/guide on mine for lining it all up
Honestly, for outriggers on these it's not required. If you can offer it up easily it's best to fit it to the body. I used to work to +/- 2mm when TVR seemed to vary by +/- 2cm from factory
Great viGreat video !!
Just booked for this year...a good straightforward vid to share with my mates to show what they are missing...cheers!
I will be taking on a Griffith soon. Question. Does the car have any side protection, as in some barriers in the doors. etc. Steve.
The Griffith does not. Which is why (after being T-boned in 2020) I can't bring myself to have one again. They're not bad in a frontal impact but terrible in side. The Cerbera and Tuscan - onwards did include a rudimentary structure/roll cage and door bars so are better in that respect.
Great job, you should be proud.
When the time comes could you rebuild my Tuscan in 20 mins please. Great job btw. :)
Unfortunately not my line of work anymore, but thanks!
Surprised you didn’t blank the exhaust ports when jet washing.
The ports aren't a direct route to the cylinders and I don't direct the jet wash into them. They're basically dry, it's also spun over prior to running to build up oil pressure prior to running. I've done many, many of these and it's never caused an issue.
Good video, thanks for posting.
Thank you so much for uploading your video, I’ve been to Goodwood Festival of Speed many times, I live in NZ now and that walk around was perfect ! Cheers , have a good one 👍👌🏻
Thanks, I know it wasn't amazing but I thought I'd share the quiet morning
This is a great video, I just recon you should probably get your microphone to not be covered up because it doesn’t sound great in the right ear
Awesome. With the bodywork gone it could easily be mistaken for a modern car (except for the gear stick, of course).
It's so rare to see one naked, I spent a rediculous amount of time taking pictures of random bits
@@Howatengineering can you share them?
Beautifull
Gotta love tubular framework in cars/racing chassis style 🙏
Did I see you using slip pieces for joining the tubes? It all happens so quick
You did. I used 3mm wall tubes inside the 2mm cds. Makes it much stronger and easier to weld up.
@@Howatengineering I hope you injected the whole structure with wa oil or similar,
@@neilmchardy9061 that would entail drilling holes in a structure that is otherwise air tight. Introducing a path for moisture is a very quick way to ensure the structure is compromised, even with waxoil (it'll never get absolutely everywhere). The original design lasts for 15-20 years, with no waxoil in the tubes. I use much superior seamless tubing too (they always rust on the seams first)
@@Howatengineering point taken
Does it help to Waxoyl (or the like) the insides of the chassis rails? Or would drilling hole for this cause more problems?
If welded properly there should be nowhere for air/moisture to get in on TVR outriggers, so they shouldn't rust fast at all. Drilling holes for waxoil is asking for trouble in my opinion. They always rust along the seam in the tubing used originally. Good seamless tubing and I see no reason why it isn't at least a once every 15-20 year job like the originals
@@Howatengineering , that is my concern. But with everything welded up there is nowhere for any moisture to escape (unless it rusts through!). Maybe paranoid, as a bike Ii have rusted the frame through from the inside (Suzuki Bandit 1200), and that was pretty thick metal on a frame that was powder coated. My guess is that when I had the frame powder coated it had blocked the tiny dran hole.
@@katywalker8322 steel needs moisture and oxygen to rust. Prepped properly there is almost no moisture and very limited oxygen in the tubes. The original method lasts 20 years + as It is when coated well.
As a retired mechanic/welder I can appreciate all the work that’s gone into this job …..well done 👏🏻👏🏻
That's very kind of you to say, thank you
No woman could ever do.
I don't know about that. I've met some brilliant female mechanics and fabricators.
@@Howatengineering. Show me the proof. Lol
@@andyb8501lol. Tell me you're inadequate and threatened by women without telling me that, you probably couldn't even make a sandwich fella
WOW that looks really good well done Alex
Great work well, Just a small comment. Please wear the correct protective clothing when welding. You would have had, I assume a lovely pink/red skin from the ultra violet light! This also can increase the risk of skin cancer. 😎
Absolutely good advice. I used to get some aweful welding burns when first learning. These days it never happens though, I even use factor 50 on my arms and face. I have got all the ppe available (jackets, hoods etc...) but very often its overkill. I spend the rest of my time in the shade, even on holiday.
Fancy having another go at this with my Chim?
Ha, if only I still had a workshop! I'm pretty tired of doing TVR chassis these days too.
Great job well done
Thank you! Cheers!
Really enjoyed this TVR series, thanks for the uploads
Glad you like them!
Awesome thank you!
You're welcome!
Edit: (This is not an induction motor! It has magneTs. It is an IPM syncrousnous motor, which has higher efficiency across the range. This motor would do good in my car) Perfectly good? Induction motors for EVs are a waste of good Amp-hours! Their efficiency is fair while accelerating, but on country roads and city driving they drop from about 86% down to 45-60%. I have an induction motor EV and I use 30A at 52mph and 19A at 32mph! In effect I get as far highway as I do city driving, which is ridiculous. (You get it, I hate induction motors in EVs!)
From a fabrication point of view, I was wondering if you’d considered cutting the tubes off a bit closer to the chassis and after your sleeve brazing on a stainless tube which could then obviously joined by welding to the other outrigger tubing? As the inboard chassis seems to be ok with the outriggers stuffed (common theme on the chim it seems) replacement with metal that won’t corrode on the parts that are most exposed might be an interesting project.
Hi Carl, I know some do exactly that. But then you induce galvanic corrosion with 2 different metals in contact. If anything It would make the spine of the car rust more quickly.
Doing this job on a Taimar chassis - excepting it's about 100 times worse and the rear section on the chassis is not looking great. See what comes back from the shot blasters!
I used to work on Chassis build at the factory. Ignore the cable ties? Can't do that, wouldn't be a TVR without a thousand tie raps, 14 tubes of silicone and 10 tubes of sika flex and a gallon of super glue! 👍
I really enjoyed this series of videos. Could you please let us know roughly how many hours it took all up?
It works out somewhere In the region of 100 hours.
You work a little faster than most. If I bring mine along next tuesday, you can do it while I run some errands.
Great to watch such a mammoth job. Have you plans to show smaller jobs, bit-by-bit? Cheers Keith
Hi Keith, thanks! I would but this was primarily a customer job, so I couldn't spend too long on the YouTubing bit. Planning to start putting out some car-related videos again, but due to a poorly timed pandemic I've been left workshop and mostly business-less and won't be doing any more TVR work for the time being. I'm doing some interesting things on old Mercedes' and will be repairing a badly damaged Audi at home soon.
@@Howatengineering many thanks and I completely understand. I very much hope the situation improves for you. I’ve subscribed and look forward to any videos you might do. Best wishes. Keith
I see you last posted 3 months ago, are you still planning further posts? Are you posting any of the other jobs you did on the TVR’s?
Hi, I no longer have a workshop and as such, no longer play with TVR's
@@Howatengineering that a shame, you made good content. Best of luck with whatever you have gone on to do.
I’m sure there is a decent TVR fan base out there, who’d like to give some of the smaller jobs a go themselves, so that would be interesting content, at least for me! It’s also good to watch the pros do the big stuff!
