The Picture of Dorian Gray Book Review
Some of these are definitely not YA.
This is my new favorite of the ME series. Maybe it's just because it's new, but the story captures the essence of the world and I loved how the end goal wasn't to save the world, it was to save city people loved. One thing that PR has perfected in this book is action sequences, I could picture all of the unique locations and I loved how the environments weren't pretty backgrounds, but fully realized puzzle pieces the characters could use. Thanks for covering the book
@@ParisCarper thanks for the comment! My fave action scene was Tamzin and the 2 assassins in the floating city. I loved how all the walls were made of paper to save weight
Man I loved white fang when I was little.. had no idea how old those books are by jack london .. great video l
@@YoungReaderReviews thanks! I bought his whole collection novels on amazon for £1. Absolute bargain!
I felt the same after Burning Daylight moved to Frisco but the whole book serves as a criticism to capitalism and therefore the second part is necessary. As is the love story I would argue. I'm not trying to shit on your review. I just felt that his message made both parts equally important and I enjoyed the second part even more after finishing the book. Towards his end Jack London had very left leaning policies.
Thanks for the comment! You are right in that it is a criticism of capitalism. I just didn't enjoy reading it as much as the man vs nature elements in the Klondike. I love that part of Jack London's writing the most.
@timburbagereads I do agree that this side of his writing is where he shines the most. If I remember correctly he did spend a year up there searching for gold with a cousin of his when he was 21. So he knew what people had to deal with at the Klondike.
@mfsars1075 I have a whole playlist on my year of reading Jack London if you want to check out some more reviews
@timburbagereads I will do that :)) thank you
I have this on the tbr (the never ending tbr 😂) and all of these books always sound so good. Can't wait to get around to it! Thanks for sharing.
@@Lost_the_plot89 i know the tbr is huge, but Mortal Engines is one of my absolute faves
Solid review - what WOULD you recommend as a first Jack London book?
@@charlie-read-a-book well that's a video that I have planned in the future, but long story short I would recommend Call of the Wild if you like Nature, The Sea Wolf if you like Character studies, The Iron Heel if you like Dystopias and Martin Eden if you like Literary Classics. His short fiction is absolutely brilliant
@ oh I love options - looking forward to hearing more thought on it in the video!
I would. It was my first and I fell in love with that book and Jack London.
Wow this sounds really cool
Thank you for the comment. I thought it was really cool.
I found Nebula way more interesting in the Marvel movies as well, there is just something about a character that isn't "perfect" and has more going on that just being "good" that is more gripping to me.
Yeah she just has a much deeper backstory and more dramatic arc
Sweat review bro.. id have to check this out next year for sure..
Thanks so much!
Excellent review Tim. I hadn’t heard of any of that before. I can think of a few towns in Scotland that really could do with being eaten!
@@CamsCampbellReads haha! It's one of my absolute faves. It is very British, in that this story starts in the roving futuristic entertainment city of ... Margate 🤣🤣
Ok SOLD that sounds awesome!
@@charliereadabook this is technically a standalone, so it would be interesting to see the perspective of someone new to the series without any history
Question: would you think this would be better if it were made into a comic book format with an artist than a novel? Great review🎉
@@YoungReaderReviews Thanks for the comment! I think it probably would be because the action would be so much clearer.
I really need to read this!!
It's really good, it's also reeeeeaaaaallly big!
Great review Tim.
@@CamsCampbellReads thank you Cams! ❤️
I love that you include the books that you read to your kids! I want to read Jonathan Strange!
@@Maeve_Ever_Books thanks for the comment! I spend a lot of time reading to them so it definitely counts haha. I would recommend Strange and Norrell, but it is a biiiig book
It was lovely reading with everyone ! I didn’t do the audio but in the reread I just might!
@@ladymairreads I would recommend it, even though I think you lose a lot of the old-style spellings that were used
This big chonker of a book looks so intimidating 😅 hoping to get to this next year though. Sounds like you had a great time with it.
@@Lost_the_plot89 It is intimidating, but listening to it over 2 months was doable and I wasn't rushing much at all
I loved this but it took me so long to get through!
@@EmmaBennetAuthor Did I mention it was a long book? 🤣🤣 I don't think I would have finished it if it wasn't on audio
I’m obsessed with this book and did the same read along as you….. I’m currently watching the BBC series which is very good….. I watched an interview with Susanna Clarke today and now want to read her other books :) Thanks for the vlog:)
@@rachelwoodisse thank you! I want to watch the show too to spot the differences
@ it’s on UA-cam 🙂
@@rachelwoodisse ooh I didn't know that! I was going to try bbc iplayer
@ yeah definitely not on iPlayer but Amazon Prime has it too
Great Wrap up.😊I remember when "Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell" came out and it was such a big fan favourite. I was in my last year of high school and everyone was reading it. I didn't want to read it because of it's size. Now, I'm like, this is the size of a Stormlight Archive book and can be done. lol. Is it character driven?
@@BasicallyNeda Suuuper character driven. It is just the life of these two magicians. I did it all on audio and it was great. It came out 20 years ago 😳😳
@@timburbagereads yes, how time flies. lol
Been eye balling the twisted tales, think I might check them out
@@Lost_the_plot89 I really like them. They aren't linked at all so you can pick and choose. Just pick your favourite film and have fun.
The ending of your videos always make me smile! I'm glad you had a good reading month!
@readingwithrebeccanicole thank you! ❤️
I only liked Nobu but, he still had flaws that I didn’t care for.
@@Maeve_Ever_Books Nobu was so stroppy. The Chairman was more of an idea than a character
I appreciate this review - I feel that I would feel very similar to you if I were to read this and as such I will not be reading it. Great video!
@@charliereadabook thanks for the comment Charlie 🙂
Will add this to the maybe list. Books like these always fasinates me to a degree.
@@Lost_the_plot89 thanks for the comment. Lots of people love it and I can see why
I love the variety of books on your tbr!
@@readingwithrebeccanicole Thanks Rebecca! I try to read around or else it all gets same-y to me. I try to spread out series rather than binge them or else I can't tell what happened in which book
This is adorable! We need more children's books represented on booktube ❤
@@readingwithrebeccanicole thanks Rebecca. I read a lot with the kids. I usually include them in my wrap ups but I might do individual reviews. Maybe as shorts?
The honest review there in the end, too cute.
@@Lost_the_plot89 she sent me the review completely unprompted haha
Don't forget about the TV series!
@@LianneBurbage I can't believe I forgot to talk about it!
Great review Tim. I did read these as a kid and it was while I was pondering my childhood favourites that I decided to get these again. I want to make a childhood favourites video and these were certainly that. It’ll be interesting to see how they hold up for me now.
@@CamsCampbellReads thanks Cams for the comment! I think if you liked them as a kid you would still like them now. They really haven't aged at all
This sounds like an interesting line up for November. Hope you enjoy them.😊
Gamora and Nebula will be added to the TBR, such good characters!
@@Bings89 I've startes this and The Grandmaster also makes an appearance. What great characters
Okay fiiiiiiine I’ll join in this looks incredible
@@ladyfarseer yaaaay! The power of social pressure!
Just a quick fyi - Ship of Magic works great for the Published in the 90s prompt, since it also ticks off hard mode (that the author has published something in the last 5 years and Hobb has published some short stories in some short stories collections, according to the r/Fantasy rec list). It is my pick for that square, though I have not read it yet 😅 I personally have 10 more books to read, which might seem good, but I want to finish the board by the end of the year, which makes it a lot harder 😅 I am also struggling with the bard prompt - I am planning on reading A River Enchanted by Rebeca Ross, but I don't really have a motivation to pick it up since it's a Celtic inspired story, but spring is nowhere near 😅
@@natasagajic1061 I hadn't noticed it was 1990s. The fun of this challenge is so much can move around and have different options
@@timburbagereads That and finding out books outside my comfort zone that I end up loving for me ☺
Godkiller has an MC with a prosthetic leg
@@Bings89 oooh I had put that on my list of "fantasy not written by old white men" that I want to start on in 2025
@@timburbagereads I love that list name 🤣and for AOC Chain-Gang All-Stars I have heard is good and is on my TBR, also would cover criminals or space opera.
Oh for criminals I looooove the Blacktongue thief!
@@charliereadabook is that quite new? It sounds super classic fantasy but the series isn't finished yet right?
@@timburbagereads came out in 2021 - reads like a D&D campaign. The second book (a prequel) came out this year and is my favorite book of the year so far. That one, however, doesn’t have the main character of Blacktongue though and they are the thief.
I’ve heard good things about Ascendant - not sure if it counts but the dragon in it I believe is blind so maybe that could fall into the disabled category
@@charliereadabook ooh that would definitely fit. I still want to read Gamora and Nebula though.
This seemed like a lot of fun. I need to so this next time
@@Already-Overbooked You can always look retrospectively and see what boxes you can tick from April. Also with 6 months left you can see how many rows and lines you can get
@@timburbagereads That's a great idea I'm going to do that!
I’ve never heard of this book. Adding it to my list to read! Glad I found your channel! Excited to watch more of your videos!
@@Maeve_Ever_Books Thank you for you comment ❤️ Jack London is a classic author who is a bit forgotten so glad to shout out loud about it!
@@timburbagereads Yes!! I love hearing about books and authors I’ve never heard of.
Ok you Made the book sound really great - not sure I can commit but I’m definitely not committing to not committing yet either
@@charliereadabook haha nice to know where you stand. Nice and clear 😂
"The con is you are going to hear me talk about this book a lot. The con is going to be there whether you are in the readalong or not, so might as well join in." Perfectly said. I'm looking forward to reading this with you!
@@readingwithrebeccanicole I hope you enjoy it!
I'll join you both in January, sounds super 😊
@PageTurnersWithKatja woop woop! Welcome to the world of kung fu!
Definitely going to TRY and join, but I do have a lot of read-a-longs booked in. Maybe I'll just be a bit late to the party...
@@SamHarrison2099 do it.....Do It......DO IT.... To be honest it is a quick read so you can definitely catch up
This book sounds amazing!!! Unfortunately I'll probably still be reading Wind and Truth in January because I'm such a slow reader. 😢
@@AFantastical_Journey don't worry. You can join in on later ones when I convince Rebecca to read the rest!
Haven't read it. You do make it sound very interesting so I might pick it up if I can find it :D. Have a great day
@@maewyn01 Thank you for the comment! I read mine on my Kindle where I bought all the Jack London books for £1 or something like that
I need to get to twiated tales,My kid keeps poking me to read them. Great review buddy
@@vens_corner thank you so much! I really enjoy them. They aren't linked at all so you can pick and choose which ones you like
Great TBR! Excited to see future videos
@@Already-Overbooked thank you! ❤️
Sounds like a fun story! I think I've only read ones that changed what happened in thr film, so I guess more of a retelling than a sequel
@@readingwithrebeccanicole each book takes on the "twist" in a different way
Never heard of these twisted tales - always fun to get a new take on a classic!
@@charliereadabook There are loads of them. If you like Disney films then I recommend them. My most viewed video is all about them
Also every time you say NOW GET OUT OF MY HOUSE Laura giggles for about a minute, so well done
@@hardysbooks thanks! ❤️❤️
So glad you’re enjoying the buddy read! Cracking video mate
@@hardysbooks I'm really enjoying it, but struggling to keep with the pace.
Noughts and crosses made me cry so much as a kid
I liked the tv show, but missed the books completely when they came out
