Geevor Gary presents Cornish Mining 1750 - 1850
Explore the rich history of Cornish mining between 1750 and 1850, a period that established Cornwall as a global leader in hard rock mining. This era was marked by significant technological advancements and a unique mining culture.
Technological Innovations and Equipment
During this century, Cornwall became synonymous with mining innovation. The introduction of steam engines revolutionized the industry by enabling deeper extraction of minerals. Pioneers like John Taylor developed crushing rolls at Wheal Friendship in 1796, enhancing ore processing efficiency. Additionally, the construction of the Great County Adit in 1748, initiated by John Williams, was a remarkable engineering feat that drained mine workings through an extensive network of tunnels, facilitating deeper mining operations.
The use of gunpowder and water power also played crucial roles in deepening mines and starting new underground ventures. These technological advancements allowed Cornwall to produce two-thirds of the world's copper from 1800 to 1830, with production peaking in 1856.
Life in the Mining Communities
The lives of Cornish miners and their families were characterized by hard work and resilience. Despite the demanding nature of their work, miners' homes were generally clean and well-ordered. It was exceedingly rare to encounter squalid living conditions among mining families.
Women were not employed underground; instead, they worked on the surface, often in roles such as ore dressing, which involved separating valuable minerals from the waste rock. This division of labor was a common practice in mining communities.
The mining industry also influenced migration patterns. The expertise of Cornish miners in hard rock mining was highly valued worldwide, leading many to emigrate in search of better pay and conditions. This movement offered opportunities for social mobility and the chance to rise in society.
Cultural and Social Impact
Mining was not just an occupation but a way of life that shaped the social fabric of Cornwall. The shared experiences of mining families fostered strong community bonds. Despite the challenges, there was a sense of pride and identity tied to the mining profession, which was passed down through generations.
This period also saw the development of infrastructure to support the mining industry, including the construction of mineral tramways and ports to transport ore, coal, and timber. These developments further integrated mining communities and contributed to the economic growth of the region.
Join us as we delve into this fascinating chapter of industrial history, exploring the innovations, daily lives, and enduring legacy of Cornish mining during its peak from 1750 to 1850.

I drilled with a silver dart I believe back in the 1970,s as a holmans apprentice on a shift to the test mine as part of the well set out apprenticeship.
Do you have to use expoy on that foam? Looks great
Sorry for delay, yes epoxy only with Eps and Xps foam, polyester resin melts these foams.
What happened with the renewal of the lease? Has it been lost?
Fascinating, I've lived on tuckingmill for a decade and never knew the extent of the mining until I saw a 3d rendered imaging of the entire network below my feet , blows your mind that people go merrily about their business with no realisation of the scale . What's the best way after covid for a a member of Joe Public to access / guided explore of some of the workings, I gotta get below but safely
Again clearly shows access . You should delete this one Gary
It's 7 years old Ben, PRE C.E, It's the interest it's all now getting is the problem, I don't name unless privately owned now and only a couple of my videos are named. Having worked in the mining industry for years I know the current feeling re access, personally I don't want the responsibility of some 12 year old with a iphone torch dying because of a video they have watched on C.E. We have always had a no names policy on C.E but have turned a blind eye from time to time. Just far too much attention from Council, owners and kids. I haven't got any issues with you or your footage other than that.
Music makes the very good video unwatchable I’m afraid. By all means keep it but turn it down to background level. A commentary explaining features of the mine would be helpful. Descriptions of lodes and various types of minerals and various shafts and where they go. At the moment we are just following blokes around a tunnel underground. Could be so much better. Thanks though
Please reupload without the music!
great video .. i been meaning to get out on kyack again this year but the one i bought was to small ! i bought a wooded valley with a mine in the tamar valley .. your videos on mining been educational , my mine goes in a fair way but a small pile of shellit blocking the way ahead but you can see over it .. anyway great video
109 likes? 110 and never again!
Im hugely interested in mines and all the history in Cornwall! I would LOVE to actually go down into a mine and explore some time as im close to all these locations, i just dont have any connections.
There's a group of guys who explore mines who meet at the Coppice Inn Lanner , last Thursday of the Month.
i was expecting submarines and 3-eyed seals..
Maybe, lots of rumours.
Great video im from London and have been to Perranporth many times, ever since i was a kid, , we used to chuck stones down thst mineshaft at the top of the cliff on the costal path to St Agnes, had no idea there were all them tunnels beneath.. Good day
Ah I would love to explore with you
great footage but the so called music made it unwatchable you lads wud be ideal 2 guide us threw telling us what your seeing , and how far under ground you are , more pls but no music
I'm parked next to it now about to hit this place video will be up as of 2 days so feel free to check it out no music ether
I like the music.
Thanks for that. It brought back many happy memories - I used a Silver 3 every day for 8 years in the 80's whilst developing the delivery and return roads on the Selby Coalfield. I then went on to driving TBMs around the world which I still do to this day.
Cracking video, just don't like the music overpowering the chat that's going on.
thank you Gary, will you be doing any more mine videos? cheers
Barry Clarke Yes I will be, just a little busy at present. Thanks.
Holy cow, and you saw Dracula down there at 5:34! Fangtastic!
hi what kit do you use to mount the go pro and where did you fix it on the yak thx. stephanie
Lose the background Audio / Music , or at the very least tone it way way down . You can't hear the commentary , which is much more preferable . Other than that , Thank You for a very enjoyable tour , - < Doc , Retired . Miner for nearly 50 years (USA) > .
Is there anything worth mining at Cligga on a commercial scale?
Jory Bennett almost certainly worth a restart, North and deep would see more viable ore.
I love Falmouth,,,,, ❤️
I enjoyed that Gary. You understand the significance of the Cornish mining diaspora when you travel around Australia (And many other places around the globe) I visited many of our old mining towns when in Oz.Our lifeblood once upon a time, greatest mining race the world has ever known.Just subscribed mate and am enjoying your vids.
Your welcome, be a few more new ones soon, just starting back out again after a break.
Michael tokley
Thanks alot for sharing
is this a mainly copper mine
Yes but also has Tin and Zinc.
thanks for sharing
Hey does anyone have videos of a man engine working? I can't find any.
thanks Gary always a fantastic vid. really enjoy your channel and seeing the pics you put in the fb group much appreciated. stay safe an be lucky!
Thanks Phil, I have been a little quiet for just over a year whilst I renovated a old derelict property, that project is almost complete and have just started exploring again, glad you liked the video.
Looks like a fascinating and fun mine to explore!
It's almost full explored we have a little more bolting to do etc and then were complete.
That blue flowstone is amazing
Are they original stulls? in them stopes on the Way down
A few originals and the majority we have replaced, all our own timber ladders, platforms etc, it's not a cheap hobby but very rewarding.
Me and my mates have been in the entrance bit, would you say it's easy to find your way around (and back out again) without a map?? We'd take safety precautions ect
The place is marked with arrows as with all mines and these will guide you, don't take the place lightly as there is a lot of bad ground, helmets lights etc required, make sure someone else knows where you are and let them know when your back so rescue can be arranged if you don't reappear.
thanks
Really interesting but the music is like something you have to listen to when waiting in a queue on the phone ! The commentary is good so you don't want to turn the sound off. MORE COMMENTARY, GARY, AND DITCH THE MUSIC.
Thanks Jan, point taken but a lot of subscribers like the music and I compose the music all myself, bar a few little snippets, it's not easy and stops youtube complaining about copyright. Thanks
Wrong ,, thats Loe Beach Feock.
Splitting hairs, lol. Falmouth gives people around the world a better idea of location.
Maybe but Looe is not even close to Loe beach!
looe beach is 30miles north near Plymouth
Ron Dustow hell spelling mistake lol, should be Low . well spotted.
No LOE>
do you make all the music yourself? really impressive
Yes build my own tracks so youtube don't give me grief, I enjoy it too. Thanks
Fascinating stuff.... simple but effective bit of kit,, these vids are bloody great... and i have never been down a mine in my life.. i have so much respect for you blokes...
Fascinating stuff Gary..used spend my summer holidays in cornwall in a little village called Trewenack...loved every minute of it.... that was over 40 yrs ago...but tin mines always amazed me.... the engine houses the dodgey shaft openings and all the old out buildings...loved it.. haven't been back to cornwall for many years but still fascinated.i even got books on it... The J C Burrow picture are wonderful..have you seen them?? first time mines had been photographed with flash ...keep up the good work mate... wish i could go with you...ha ha
Yes seen his pictures and a lot of originals by other old photographers. We are lucky with our local environment but building estates are slowly destroying this as Cornwall turns to concrete, we often have to rush in take some pictures or videos and then they are covered over..
Good video Garry. I drilled some of those holes... Happy days. Great history with this place!
Drilled a few there to :)
This brings back many happy memories Gary. Had a lot of fun drilling and blasting here during the early 90s, when a mining student at csm.
ha, ain't seen that one before !
Interesting tunnel D,Man.
yes, been in it but was over 20years ago now, like what you done at the start ;)
I really like the historic pictures and commentary.
Screw wellies, boots and wet socks ;o)
Need more vids Gary!!!!! this is my favourite mining vid of all time, seen it so many times :) Uploading one over an hour long atm :)
Yes mate, more will be on the way soon, I have had a year out renovating a old derelict house for my base, it is almost finished and my lamp will be on charge soon. Have some great places to film and really looking forward to it. Cheers Gary
Thanks Gary, as this is my favourite mining video of all time, I've seen it so many times and shared it with others at work etc who have been absolutely amazed :o)
RetroGamerVX Yes more to come soon, basically finished renovations on old derelict house. Plan is to get underground in April on the Blue Mine renovations.
Great footage and great mines, but why super impose nosferatu and add creepy soundtrack? It would be more exciting for us mine nerds just hearing you guys talk and kick up some gravel.
Creepy sound track etc is due to music creation, I write my own and it is another hobby so I include them in the films I make to get my music out and about. Little creepy addons is just to broaden my skills with editing and give a little fear factor lol. GoPro sound is a little poor and the majority of the sound fx have to be added after the film. Gravel trays, water, clanks etc created in the garden then added. It is not easy.
Awesome video! Thank you for sharing! Thumbs up 👍 I subscribed to your great channel. Notifications on 👍Hope you find some time to visit mine and sub back if you like it :) Have a pleasant evening!
Very kind of you, I like your cooking videos to but at present not a lot of spare time due to property renovation, only a few months left though now and then back underground for more filming. I will spread the word on your dishes. (y)
The sound FX spoiled it , just tryn ta ear de ol tinner spin a yarn an a bloody whale keeps sqeeln ova da top
Everyone has there own opinions and a lot like the sound tracks. At least I write all my own music, I never liked Leonard Cohen's music but others enjoy it.
good work ol Sun, still very educational, much respect.
i don"t understand why you use two ropes with a descender , x PCG now living in France i know that it is possible to use STR like SINGLE ROPE TECHNIQUE one ROPE so why the hand bloquer? and the extra weight of rope? also there is the need to install deviations to stop the rope rubbing the rock! but otherwise it brings back fond memories, thanks
Safety line is there for that exact reason, if a rock was to fall whilst decending a shaft and cut through a line you still have a chance. SRT can be one rope but only one chance and I'd rather have 2 lives lol. We use carpet for rock rub points or try and rig to avoid contact.
Well, at least you were getting some good footage at first! Wow, glad you kept your head there mate, lol, had a mind of its own there for a second it seems.
Thank you with no gps it is harder to fly and if you let it decend to quick with the GoPro it seems to go into safe landing mode, which I believe was what it was trying to do.
That was tremendous.Could not stop watching.Great stuff.
It is an amazing site to visit, we're very lucky to have it on our doorstep.
