Crosswind blows CBR500r off road
Переглядів 255 тис.6 років тому
For everyone watching, I'd appreciate if you checked out Squid Tips UA-cam channel. Specifically the videos around the incident involving him having a gun pulled on him while being stopped by an non uniformed police officer for a minor infraction. He's a Seattle based rider who is trying to get policy corrected to make police stops in Washington, and hopefully the US as a whole, more safe for b...
I was riding yesterday. It’s my first year on a bike and I also have a CBR500R. It was insanely windy, I believe I saw 20mph with 30mph gusts. But temperature was beautiful so I couldn’t pass it up before winter. At 60mph I was blown hard and lost balance. I instinctively put my right leg out as if at the speed it was going to do anything… I reduced my speed a ton and was scared sh*t less the rest of the ride. It felt like being on ice, there was just no grip and the occasional gust would toss me side to side. I didn’t go off the road, but I was terrified. Need to look up tips for dealing with wind.
I'm a learner, 3 rides on my CBR500 so far. Experiences some intense crosswinds but luckily no this bad. I'd suggest try leaning head down like a sports person and tuck your hands in too. Helped a little
60mph crosswinds on a sportbike? HELL no im walkin to work 🤣
This happened to me about a year into riding. I was heading southbound on the CA 101 on my R6. The crosswind was primarily gusting from east to west. I tried like hell to stay on the road but no matter what I did, it just wasn’t happening for me. Unfortunately, I got pushed off the road completely and the shoulder was all dirt. I hit a massive hole in the ground and got thrown over the handlebars while my bike did a couple cartwheels behind me. It was only about 4:30am and not much traffic out. I laid there off the side of the road for a couple hours while my girlfriend helplessly kept driving by trying to find me. I couldn’t really get up because my lower back was totally fucked. Still hasn’t healed completely, four years later. She finally located me and was able to pull me into the passenger seat of her car. I laid back and called a tow truck which took forever. But they finally arrived and got my bike home for me. Anytime after that day I’ve gotten stuck in the wind on the freeway. I just pullover, take the backroads home, and get in my truck. Be safe out there guys!
I've been riding for decades. And if it's highly windy on mountain freeways with winds blowing from left to right and your counter steering with your bike on its onion peels. No riding in the wind techniques work. None! You're going to get pushed out of your lane and out of control. Sometimes, you just can't win against the wind! It's scary as hell when Mother Nature takes over control of your bike. In actual very high winds, get off the freeway and slowly drive some place safe.
This is how i feel on my bike. Will a honda hornet handle the wind better than a 400 to 500 sports bike
Looks more like turbulance to me.
Had 35 mph winds with 60 mph gusts today and got blown out of my lane. Scary as hell good this is a dope video
Shit-yer-pants windy
Did you even counter steer or only lean? It didn't looks like you were counter steering at all.
Bro, it’s 100% your fault. 1st thing you should do is lower your speed and grip the tank. The more you speed the more you’ll get lighter on the bike. As soon as i saw you speeding towards 80 and passing a car on your right that was blocking the wind for you, i knew it wasn’t gonna be fun.
Wow amazing recovery; I’m here cuz I nearly felt this from the Santa Ana winds
High speed roads with absolute zero emergency lane. Nice touch that there was zero guard rail, thsi could have been waay worse otherwise.
5 years late and this video is still helping people 🤙✌
good work letting the speed bleed off slowly.... instead of totally freaking out... like i did
Dobrze, że to nie była europejska autobana
I would have shit my pants. High crosswinds are no joke.
I fuckin hate wind, I like tho in the video he didn't stop for very long, didn't seem too shaken up about almost laying down his bike, good job bro.
Thank God for the median and the cut grass.
So he wants to go right to stay on course, but instead of counter steering he steered in the direction he wants to go. Sorry, the wind didn’t blow him off course, he steered himself off course. Remember, counter steering. You point the wheel in the opposite direction you want to go. Remember now? I’ve been riding for 36 years now, rain or shine, windy or calm. I have ridden in some nasty wind from the famous Santa Ana Winds in California of 40-60 mph winds. Yes, you have to watch out when you pass truck or other high profile vehicles. No wind and then all of a sudden you come out of the truck cover and the wind can catch you by surprise if you are not expecting it. I always expect it so it’s not a surprise to me any more. I also expect it on bridges. It’s not fun, but not as scary as many make it sound.
I was looking for a comment like yours. Well done for pionting out the importance of countersteering. I never really worked out how to countersteer until I rode through an incredibly windy day a decade or so ago along the north coast of Scotland. The wind was trying to blow me into the sea and I was having a nightmare. I went off the road on the upwind side cos the wind suddenly died for a second. Luckily I recovered it and suddenly I got the hang of countersteering. Due to the gustyness I had to react constantly but I felt really in control and I started laughing cos it was such fun. Since then a windy day is no worry for me. Yesterday I rode through 35mph winds with 50 gusts in storm Debi on the motorway in England. No other bikes in sight. The countersteering has become so natural now I hardly noticed it was windy.
Hey mate, would it be nice to feature your clip in my next episode? Credited of course (watermark and link to your channel).
Hey, can i use this video in my new compilation? credit in the description, comment & your channel name in compilation
Excellent save man!
Smart rider Kept the f35 safe
excellent recovery.. could have gone very badly. way too fast for conditions, reduces reaction time, wrong lane position passing the truck, needed to be closer as he came back to the wind stream so he would have room to drift until he passed out of the high pressure area
if this wind can off road your bike then my bike will fly.
Im watching this because im new to sport bikes. Been on a cruiser for 22 years. And i noticed wind effects me a lot more on the the sport. I bought a cheap 2009 Suzuki gs500f. And it almost threw me off the highway. So sold it went with a sport touring 2006 Suzuki gsx750f katana. Which is heavier than the 500. Weighing right at 500lbs. I ride sideways almost all the time. And when i seen you go to pass that truck my butthole got tight🤣. I learned to never pass trucks on a windy day. That was a good job keeping that bike up off road👍.
I had this happen on a vstrom. Put it up for sale that day and bought a heavier bike….FJR1300. I will never go back to a lighter bike…..and not to mention I love not having to oil a chain. Driveshaft is the way to go
Why try to ride in conditions like that? When it gets too crazy here I get off hwy and go for state highway or surface streets. Regardless, excellent job staying cool and handling the emergency. Glad you're OK!
This was almost me yesterday on new Ninja 1000SX. Yikes!
Hey man may I include this in a compilation? It'll be credited and linked back to your channel
Nice day for a ride!
That truck stopped in the underpass knew those winds were too crazy. Kinda funny you got blown off at 75, then got back up to 75 lol.
Yeah, that truck parked at the overpass was a dead giveaway.
Great job keeping rubber on the...well grass. Haha. But seriously that was impressive. Glad you're ok
Ja gute Idee mit dem überholen. Gut das an der Stelle der Grünstreifen dann noch breiter wurde. Den Wind sollte man niemals unterschätzen!
Hello, May I use this video in my next compilation? of course with full credits in the description and watermarked in the video.

Little stupid to drive on the left side off the road.
Hey there, cool to use? Full credits given, of course, thank you!
Looks like I-40 in the panhandle of Texas, strong gust of wind
Wow how scary
I came here to see the effects of high wind on motorcycles. I'm in Nebraska, and he has a Nebraska sticker.......got it, not riding my motorcycle tomorrow......
AS this is AMERICAN ill do the commentary DUDE DUDE that was awesome , that was some shit man !!!! You hang loose Bro ,, How a English person saying it "well that was some wind were you ok !!!! take it easy on way home
I used to get blown all over the road on my 2007 Suzuki Vstrom 650. I installed a fork brace which completely transformed the bike in strong winds. Bike went straight. No weaving around in crosswinds. I had no idea a fork brace would do this. I guess crosswinds push on the bike which twists the forks which steers the bike. Just a guess. Will this work on other bikes? I don't know.
good save
1. Good job not panic braking and eating a mouthful of dirt 2. Good job not running into oncoming traffic Highly recommend not riding during windy days, I've had my fair share of close calls and they've mostly been on windy days!
0:36 congratulations you are now officially a trail bike rider, you can use Africa sticker or Paris dakar one! As well as huge metal topcase!

A tip I picked up is to angle your knee out towards the direction the wind is pushing you from. You leg will act like a sail and limit how much you need to countersteer so you don't get into a dangerous situation where you're countersteering hard and the wind dies down quickly
