VERY USEFUL 4-step study guide: brainstorm and analyse
In this video, I model a fantastic 4-step study approach. My focus here is Macbeth, but this would be beneficial for many different topics or subjects (such as a novel study etc)
1. Brainstorm for 5-minutes
2. Link evidence to themes or big ideas
3. Identify literary devices
4. Share with a peer/s

Macbeth study: exploring the witches' 'hell-broth' ingredients
Переглядів 288Місяць тому
In this video, I unpack some of the more symbolic ingredients that the witches put into their cauldron in Macbeth in Act 4, Scene 1 before he visits them and sees the apparitions. These ingredients are easy to remember and actually allow you to explore key themes such as children, death, murder, sin, religion, motherhood, violence, and darkness. Ideally, this video will help you go beyond 'Doub...

Swallow the Air: part 2 - thesis guide and planning tips

Note that I focus firstly on the topic (I call this the 'anchor' word or phrase), then I collect words that respond to the prompt (that will form my thesis), then I map out what my body paragraphs might be about. Macbeth song requests: making connections between lyrics & quotes
Переглядів 3952 місяці тому
This activity was really successful in helping students to make connections between lyrics and quotes from the play. It helped them to develop a deeper understanding of the plot and character relationships, as well as characterisation and literary devices. Here is a snapshot of work from my Year 12 English students. It was a fun and engaging lesson - feel free to try this or adapt to fit your c...
Witches in Macbeth: (part 2) context and opening scenes analysis
Переглядів 3892 місяці тому
In this video, we discuss the opening scenes of Macbeth which feature the witches. We also focus on literary devices such as pathetic fallacy, foreshadowing, paradox, and fricative alliteration. We count some syllables but my iambic pentameter video is coming soon so we don't get too much into that here. We do discuss how the witches' dialogue reflects the beliefs at the time, especially as it ...
Witches in Macbeth: Historical context (part 1)

This video was filmed in class as part of our intro to Macbeth lessons. In it, we look at the changing representations of witches and focus on Dürer’s engraving titled Witch riding backwards on a goat, from 1500. By analysing this etching, students can learn a lot about the beliefs about witches and witchcraft in the middle ages and Jacobean era, especially relating to gender. Students also lea...

Something else interesting is that in the original Folios the witches are referred to as "The Weird Sisters". The etymology of the word "weird" is intricately tied into these characters and the other things you mention about them and the context. There is a very common piece of mythology across Europe that three women control your fate, symbolized by spinning. The witch you show has a spindle that she's "riding". In fact, many of the words and terms to describe the future and fate come from this analogy. Things "turn" out a certan way, there can be "twists" of fate, etc. The Fates from Greece and the Norns from the Norse are both examples of this. But what do they have to do with the Weird Sisters from MacBeth? Well the answer is in the word "weird". "Weird" was a term used almost exclusively in Scotland to refer to strange twists of fate or even the ability to control fate. (We can easily see how the word made the jump to anything strange because most of that esoteric stuff *is* pretty weird). It is no shock then that Shakespeare chose this word, one unique to Scotland, for the witches of this play!

Thanks for this amazing comment! I learned a lot just from your notes here, so thank you for adding more cool content here. So cool to connect those words 'turn' and 'twist' to the spindle. Really appreciate your comment - thanks!

"Romantic" is still an adjective - in phrases like "the Romantic Movement", "Romantic literature" etc., the word "Romantic" describes the movement, literature, what have you. True, it is used somewhat differently from the way the word is used today, but it is still an adjective. The noun is "Romanticism" (as you say, though confusingly, as that statement comes immediately after your statement that the word "Romantic" is not an adjective, but a noun).

hi i just wanted to ask. do we have to write "representation 1 or 2" before the paragraph or would it be marked down

    • @barebonesteaching
      @barebonesteaching 4 місяці тому

Hi! Thanks for watching and for the comment. It’s totally up to you. You could easily do a little subheading like “representation 1 or 2” or just make sure it’s two clear chunks that do everything you’re being asked to do. Ensure you mention “representation” in the topic sentence. Another tip I tell my kids is to underline the use of the words they are looking for like “value” or “belief” - this helps you to see that you’ve covered the things you’re being ask to cover. Good luck!
