Reminds me of the author of the book most-read by gangster rappers - Pimp: The Story Of My Life. I owned an old paperback copy of it before gangster rap existed. He became the top pimp - not to mention a narcotics dealer - in Chicago when it was still actually Second City - the second-most populated city in the USA. Before the war vs Japan in the Pacific caused a huge influx of people into, and a huge military and business build up on, the previously-sleepy US Pacific coast, including Los Angeles. "It's only $100 per day" (per prostitute) (to bribe the local police into protecting, rather than busting, him, and them, not to mention the huge amounts of cocaine and heroin they were using) he wrote. $100 was more than the average full-time worker in the average job in the US made per week at the time.

I’m producing a documentary on the old Coney Island Track in Cincinnati. Big Bill actually bought the track in 1925 when ownership stock was first issued privately. But you are correct, he handed over management operations to Dutch Schultz in 1934. He was forced to put the track in receivership shortly after Schultz was murdered and sold off his ownership stake in 1936 to the Cleveland Four.

Family had old school bars and businesses in Calumet City. They were Polish and tell of days when Capone's guys tried to force them to buy booze from them. The Italians were driven off and the locals didn't use them for alcohol.

When I was a young lad in the 60s my Irish grandfather introduced me to an old gentleman named Red Dwyer (don't know if he was related to Big Bill) and he was a retired gambler and rum runner in central NY. I met him at Belhurst Castle on Seneca lake (he owned it) and he took me and my brothers to the basement where there was a tunnel to the lake shore (not usable by the 60s). He told us he used the tunnel to smuggle booze from boats that brought it in at night. For many years he operated a speakeasy and gambling parlor at the castle. He grew up with my grandfather (born 1899) in Lyons, NY and they were close friends. The NY Times did a nice piece on Red Dwyer long after his heyday was over and it can still be found.

Another interesting video, like the great video you did for Vannie Higgins, although there was a lot of identical content in the two videos, and your pronunciation for some words like cortege is a bit off (phonetic pronunciation would be 2 syllables: "kaw" + "TAYZH", not cor-te-je), and I doubt very much that the filming of Legs Diamond leaving hospital on new year's 1930 was made for television! This is 1930 after all, there were only 6,000 television sets in use in US homes, by 1946! It's likely that the film was made for news reels in cinemas..!

Really not much has changed since the 1890s for immigrants. Except the numbers are much greater now, a percentage will turn to crime. At the end of the day the US should be congratulated for taking in immigrants such as the Irish, Germans, Jews etc who had no prospects in their home country.

Out of all the famous gangsters it appears the exploits of Vincent Cole was downplayed,no movies ever made about him ever showed so many sides of him like you did.And the guy did it all before he was 23 yrs old .

Hm, I've listened to a couple of the longer episodes here on your channel and I've noticed there's often a great deal of overlap between one mobster story and the next, but the reason I'm commenting now is because of this specific mobster, Dutch Schultz. In short, I think posterity should always be reminded that Schultz "did not go gently into that good night" when his number came up. Any chance of doing a video just on "The Last Words of Dutch Schultz"?
