Step 1
At the first step, place the new “toilet” on the floor like a regular litter box.
The first step is the most difficult and take a lot of time! Go slow! It took us 3+ weeks! All this time you need to be prepared for the fact your cat will scatter litter all over the toilet! But remember - cats are very clean animals, you must keep the toilet clean.
Actually, while training your cat to use the toilet, you will understand - cats don’t do their business as often as it seems when they use the litter box 😂. Our cat does everything twice a day - morning and evening!
If your cat gets confused he or she may find a place in your home to “go” where they feel more secure. A couple of these accidents, and it may be hard to break this bad habit, so let the behavior of your pet dictate when to advance to the next step.
How do you understand that your cat is ready to move to the next step? The cat goes to the toilet on its own, without persuasion, delay or subterfuge as “I’ll dig here”, and “I’m not comfortable here, give back my litter box!” 😂
And even when this happens, give to the cat a few more days to better adapting and then you can move on.
Never smack your cat and never ‘rub their noses in it’. This is cruel and ineffective. Not only could you cause real damage, but the cat will not know why it got smacked, it will simply regard it as an attack. Thus, you will not solve the problem, and you will possibly damage your relationship with your cat (which should be based on trust), impeding further training. Cats - just like people - learn better through encouragement and reward as opposed to criticism and punishment.
Tip: Rewarding them with treats will help in toilet training cats.
Step 2
The seat with a solid disc is installed on the toilet.
Fill the small indent in the center of the device with flushable litter.
IMPORTANT!!! At this stage, you have to use soy or other flushable litter so as not to clog the drain!
Make sure the seat is stable! Your cat has to feel safe!
As an intermediate step, raise the litter box in increments each week. In order to transition your cat from litter box to toilet, you'll need to raise the litter box up near the toilet seat. Eventually, your cat will learn to jump onto the toilet seat when he has to eliminate each week. Using stacks of newspaper, cardboard, or old magazines raise the litter box by 3 inches each day until it's on level with the toilet seat
Tip: Clean out the litter after each use and add some catnip to the clean litter
Step 3
Use the training disc with a small hole in the centre surrounded by the litter. Your cat stands on the litter while learning to balance. Gradually decrease the amount of litter you're using as well. Each time your cat eliminates, replace the litter with a slightly smaller amount than before..
Flush the toilet after each use by your cat.
Step 4
Use the disc with the large hole. Your cat learns to go directly into the toilet while balancing all four paws on the seat with their rear over the hole.
Your cat won’t need litter any more and you can enjoy the benefits of a litter-free home!
Step 5
All attachments are removed!
The whole process took us 1.5-2 months, it is important not to rush, but to let the cat move from step to step as smoothly and calmly as possible.
Prepare for setbacks. Toilet training, even when done properly, frequently causes setbacks. If your cat is resistant to a step in the process, he might begin eliminating elsewhere. If this occurs, take a step back and see if this helps.
Toilet training takes time, organization, and dedication. If you're not generally a well organized person or if you're very busy, you might be better off sticking with litter.
