This small audio clip of a wiped T.O.T.P. was found at the end of a C90 cassette tape. It features Kenny Everett introducing the number one record by Dawn in his own inimitable way! Unfortunately this is all that was found. Enjoy!

Later on Alan had absolutely no recall of the presentation: he had to put over a story to appease any enquiery and obviously full of hilarity. A kind friend, as Alan's days became shorter asked for something that might make him feel worthy of himself. He was a very humble man in his private life. A word was spread and we thought a note from a Minister might be in order but to joy and absolute surprise Tony Blair had heard from a friend in The Lords and on the day of the G 8 Summit pushed the marmalade jar aside at breakfast and wrote to Alan on behalf of himself and The Nation. xx

What a wonderful guy Shaun! Great interview and I remember those days when you visited him and I met him later at Capital Radio 194! He was one of the greatest!

A true legend of the airwaves, but in particular, his long running Saturday afternoon 'Saturday Rock Show' that used to go out on VHF/FM Stereo (on the borrowed Radio 2 frequency) which literally blew out of your speakers in kaleidescopic stereo sound with his cleverly compiled jingle with the eclectic mix of rock and classical tracks that left you in no doubt that for the next two or three hours, you were in for a real treat. The 'Rock Top Twenty' being a regular, plus the daft and quirky sketches of John Peel and John Walters, ("hoh, hoh, hoh, hoh!! OOOO..." only those who remember it will understand!). He even got me interested in Tomita, the Moog synthesizer musician. Such a diversity of music was played, plus the regular rock legends, including names that are less familiar to anyone under 60 now: Family, Focus, The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, etc. I remember my best friend taping the show when Fluff played virtually the whole side of Pink Floyd's newly released 'Wish You Were Here' album in '76. He alone probably won Floyd a whole new generation of fans by playing this, along with many other rock bands' music. If the BBC hasn't already erased the archives, they ought to secure a deal with the record companies to do a tribute CD box set of the best of what was an award winning show that ran from 1974 until 1978. Much revered and respected man in the pantheon of rock music.

Had my first hearing of Bebop deluxe's Adventures in a Yorkshire landscape on his show one Saturday afternoon. Wonderful DJ /music lover. The days when radio meant something downloads just don't have the soul.

Wizzard would actually replace this as the nation's no.1 - I wish the actual performance footage still existed. I remember the cardboard cut-outs of Eric & Ernie, and of course Ayshea on backing vocals. Great times.

I'm a big fan of top of the pops episodes my era was the eighties it is nice to see or hear the different periods of the shows. I know ITV wiped shows from their archives. But BBC wins hands down for vandalism.

who among the young generation at that time would buy Matt Monroe? I personally was buying Brook Benton[amongst others] then MM,MM, MM ETC,already had the original by Major Lance, then the Sandy Shaw, always something there to remind me,already had the Lou Johnston version, far better!! how out of touch all these these people !!!

+soulfella1 The majority of record buyers were thr over 30 brigade as in the Julie Rogers record at no 3. The only way I heard new records was through the radio which was dominated by British acts, as the record producers had people to meet American ships at Liverpool docks and buy records off the Crew,so by the time say Major Lance released his disc over here, a cover was already in the charts.

+pamela mcgregor hi ,I am listening to this programme[which is painful, generally] on the tunes I have already mentioned I"M sure I am correct,on which version came first! the hit parade was more often full of second rate music, proberly because most discs bought by very young Girls[who fancied the young guys] dozens of black American tunes were covered by these People!!all like the Stones,Beatles [early days]and most of the rest. TUNE that denied top spot to the Beatles," RELEASE ME", I personally had LONG before, recorded late 1962,issued early 1963,by the soulful ESTHER PHILLIPS,[check E. Humpoerdink release date]check out dates on Hollies "JUST ONE LOOK"ORIGINAL?? DORIS TROY!! if looking at the audience,on any of these shows[including Ready steady go]have no idea on dancing!!only exception, dance contest on RSG,dance pair from clued up mod spot[THE SCENE CLUB]one of the best music venues in the 60s,and competition from THE EPARDIDO[S.london, unknown to Me!!have a listen to songs,Singers mentioned!!try "ITs JUST A MATTER OF TIME"[1959]by BROOK BENTON,for Me the absolute zenith!!maybe the reason I could not settle for second best years later.

Thanks for posting. A great way to intro the song at no. 1 Shame the Sweet song (Hell Raiser) never made it to the top, but I think Dawn have stood the test of time (as did the record before; Get Down by Gilbert O'Sullivan and the one after; See my Baby jive by Wizzard), unlike a lot of no. 1 singles in recent years.
