There’s so much great content coming out of Japan, as well as other countries. But we’re conditioned to only watch what American producers choose to let us see, in the hope that they’ll make some money out of it. It’s sad because anime works in so many ways that American productions tend to miss or censor out, so we’re left without knowing what the real story is about. And that’s a real shame…

I'm actually surprised SG haven't won more. My neighbour totoro & howls moving castle would win awards up against anything of their time for me.
It's ABSOLUTELY fucking baffling. Howl's Moving Castle, Ponyo, The Wind Rises..all movies that deserve oscars. Unfortunately the oscar for best animated feature only got introduced in 2001. So Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro, Grave of the fireflies all were never considered for the award, which sucks.

Having watched "Grave of the fireflies" I'm always reminded that animation isn't just for kids. While its age rating isn't high, it has a lot of gravity for older viewers. Dealing with war and having loved ones lost to it is sometimes even hard for adults to grasp as most of us have never seen war, and the movies main characters were children.
