“Know the Signs, Jazz against Prostate Cancer” happened in November 2014 when a Guildford based Big Band www.somethinelse.org, supported by jazz bass master, Andy Cleyndert met at Waterloo Station to raise awareness of Prostate Cancer, the most common cancer in men. An army of fantastic volunteers gave out hundreds of leaflets to the commuters of Surrey and Hampshire explaining how to “know the...
So awesome!
Hi
Hi
Anyone know the name of Bobby Watson’s composition?
Wheel Within A Wheel. There are many good versions but a favourite is by The Horizon Quartet which features Bobby Watson. I have it up on my channel. ua-cam.com/video/I5SyN8Ppc1Y/v-deo.html
THANK YOU
19:52 David Baldwin. James's younger brother.
Terence is featured on I Thought About You
My late grandmother and Bu's aunt were great friends.
The jazz conservatory The finishing school for jazz.
First saw this on Channel 4 in Britain back in 1986, during a brief 'Sound of Surprise' series that also featured documentaries on Miles, Sonny Rollins and Ornette. The days before the station decided to go the 'reality tv' route! Glad to find it again.
IMHO, last great Jazz Messenger edition was with Freddie Hubbard, Cedar Walton, Wayne Shorter and Curtis Fuller. Though Art had some great individual players in the band since, it's never been the same. But he had to keep going......
He had two greats with him when we saw him in Boston in 1976, Bill Hardman and the underappreciated Albert Dailey on piano.
@@hivicar ...Yes, I remember that unit!
Very true!
Legend...
Actually got to witness this live when i was 16 and changed my life. Thank U to all involved. Philip Bent's Flute man, made my nose bleed brother. Seeing Courtney Pine soon live and that's gonna be like a home coming from all those years ago, man this music is like coming home. Peace and huge respect 2U all. x
The young trombonist Tim Williams is featured in this Blakey crew. Does anyone know what became of him?
Kaplinka Tim “Bone” Williams lives in New York and is still playing.
Thanks for asking.
Wow this really takes me back! Saw IDJ live in the 80’s - what a show that was. Great to see this on-line.
Too much formation dancing I wanted to see more individual steps and realistically the style they're all dancing comes from one person and that's Jerry. I know that because we all used to dance at the horseshoe (jaffers) from back in 1980. Shoutout to Neil and also Austin.
...just the way it was edited...
Blakey was not only a legendary musician and band leader but also a great mentor to young and up and coming musicians. Great Musicians like Wayne Shorter, Branford and Winton Marsalis, Donald Harrison, Bobby Watson and too many others to mention are now carrying on the great skills and traditions learned from Mr. Blakey!
Messengers in name only, this shit represents jazz's dark age. I miss Hank, K.D., Horace, Doug, Donald, Lee, Bobby and Walter Davis the true architects of the sound playing from the heart and not sounding like a College band. It is sad that some people think that this shit swings.
David Richardson ...Agreed! Bu's best units: Clifford Brown, Kenny Dorham, Bill Hardman, Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, Curtis Fuller, Lou Donaldson, Gigi Gryce, Jackie McLean, Hank Mobley, Johnny Griffin, Benny Golson, Wayne Shorter, John Gilmore, Horace Silver, Sam Dockery, Bobby Timmons, Walter Davis, Jr., Cedar Walton, John Hicks, Curly Russell, Doug Watkins, Spanky DeBrest, Jymie Merritt, Reggie Workman, Victor Sproles and Stanley Clarke.
You sound like a no talent, wannabe musician wanker. Have you ever composed, performed, dor put your art out there for other's entertainment and pleasure? I know you're not a lusician, and if you come back stating your credentials I'll know you're a lying cnut. Keep your shite opinions to yourself. If you have nothing good to say without googling a list of old artists first, just STFU.
David Richardson - I'm glad somebody said it so I don't have to.
David Richardson You are a miserable twat. Here you have on UA-cam a great documentary of Art in his later years with tons of great, interviews and behind the scenes footage and all you can do is bitch and moan! Damn. This was once something I rented on VHS back in the day (one weird video store - remember them(?) - had it near me)...it was hard to find. Now it is here for everyone to see and you complain.
@davidrichardson306 @brucescott4261 and @vova47 I'm sure Bu would be laughing his a*s/ar*e off at your unhinged opinions .... You claim to be Messengers fans, that this unit represents jazz's *_dark age !_* and that the music doesn't swing ..... all on the basis of a few snippets of a few songs from this set. Were any of you there for this concert in London ?? Hmm ? Well I was ...and I'm assuming from the nonsense of your words that none of you definitely couldn't have been. You'd all be well advised to retract your posts, go away and at least get three or four facts straight before you present opinion or argument. And whilst we are at it ... Bu and Horace Silver set up the Jazz Messengers not only as a creative jazz hub where musicians were nurtured to develop their own unique style and sound, but it was also meant to be a collective where people created their own compositions, learnt about the music business and go on to become band leaders in their own right. Each one of the musicians featured in this line-up (whether UK or USA) went on to accomplish all of these tasks..... so clearly *_NOT_* Messengers in name only. You're all a bunch of jokers but do still keep supporting jazz so you can start to learn fact from fiction
Finally this is on UA-cam!
Ed is just amazing!....
