Scuba Diving with Sea Lions | La Jolla Cove
La Jolla Cove is one of the best places to dive with sea lions because it's home to one of the largest sea lion rookeries in Southern California (a rookery is just a fancy word for "breeding ground").
Fall is the best time of year to get up close with these ocean dogs. The water is warmest in the fall and the visibility is at its best. It's the perfect time for playtime!
Under adult supervision, the juvenile sea lions are allowed to come investigate divers. They seem to have a fun time blowing bubbles and showing off their impeccable swimming skills.
We encounter sea lions throughout the year. Book a dive with us if you want to see them in action underwater. Visit divecalifornia.com for more details.

Did the kelp forests in the Cove. Also did the wall an La Jolla shores. Two words for both: dry suit. Both dives put ya below the thermocline. Both are much more enjoyable in a dry suit. Tons to see in the kelp forests. Being warm lets ya take your time to enjoy it.
Is it too cold to go in a wetsuit at this time?
@@daylinhesford3116 A lot depends on you and also how deep you intend to dive. I don't know what the water temps are now (I'll leave that to you to check), but those temps they post are typically above the thermocline. If you'll dive deeper than 35 ft, which is where the good stuff is in the kelp forests, you're looking at water temps in the 50's. That's a 7mil suit, and even then it'll be shortened dives and expect it to be cold, which can be dangerous if you aren't with experienced divers to watch out for you and avoid hypothermia. Personally, I'd rather dry suit dive those temps, but you have to be certified and I suggest well trained to dive kelp forests in a dry suit. Always check with a certified dry shop in the area, go with divers who have experience in that area.
Beautiful! I’ll be diving in La Jolla in a few weeks.
That’s my favorite beach in California.
