Enlarging two-handed rapier

With my collaborators I visited Affoltern depot and we measured a lot of awesome swords. This extending rapier is one of the most interesting pieces of the Zurich Landesmuseum collection. It is dated to the first half of the 17th century. It can either be a rapier or become a two-handed sword! 😯🤩 This is one of the three specimens known. My first interpretation of part 6 of Marozzo's first assalto. Not very convinced by the tramazzone dynamic after the first falso manco. Not really. I showed the total length of it, but the actual rapier length implies that is the blade that shortens and sink into the middle hollow part. I tried to describe it in the video, but maybe I could have been clearer in my description. If the blade and hilt advance you get the two-handed configuration. If you advance just the blade you get the super-long rapier (useless). If you don't move anything it is just a rapier, more or less. Even though a part of the blade results non-sharp as it is the hollow part. Anyway, not a practical weapon, I agree.

      I reckon it was intended for spadone style wide slashes extended against groups and as a rapier retracted against an individual. As a tool for self defence and displaying status it's sufficient and suitably flashy, as long as the craftsman did a good job on the now missing locking pins.

    I was looking to order my first feder (cuz most clubs just study longsword). Since I study Bolognese sidesword, an Italian inspired design made sense to me. The Regenyei Armory Italian Feder pulled me in. I didn't know that I had to thank you for its design: thank you! I was wondering about the best blade/grip/guard size to select in the store options. That's how I found your channel. Your list of measurements help a lot. If you see this... what flex for the blade would you recommand? Strong or medium? I want to go for medium, but I wonder if there's an advantage to go for strong considering the longer blade (i.e. I don't want the tip to flap around in solo drills, but I want to be able to spar with people without getting hate from them).

    • @thespadoneproject5352
      @thespadoneproject5352 9 місяців тому

      Hello! Thank you for the appreciation :) we achieved a good result and of course Regenyei's expertise has been the unreplaceable part, I would never take all the merit ;) I would suggest the medium for safety but keep in mind that it does flex and if your opponent parries it is possible for your blade to get around the parry and strike a bit from the side, which could be considered an unwanted advantage

    • @FiliiMartis
      @FiliiMartis 9 місяців тому

      @@thespadoneproject5352 Thanks! Medium it is! From UA-cam sparing videos, I saw the "wrap-around" you mentioned. Sometimes it gets comical. But I guess it's common with feders if one wants to keep them safe. And it's not like I'm going to jump straight away to tournament fighting. -Btw, I am also considering a 101cm length because going for the 104cm max (more spadone like) could be seen by clubs as being unfair for longswords. In this case, I am also considering a 34cm grip. Do you think a 3-4cm difference matters in how you fight with it? And did you got "complaints" from people you fenced with? Or am I worrying about nothing and I should just go with your numbers for the best Bolognese longsword experience. 😉- Edit: I realised that the longer grip is to match Marozzo's recommendations for a grip as long as your forearm, and I saw others with 104cm long blades. So yes, I was overthinking things... I will go with the numbers that people who know better than me spent their time fine-tuning them with the maker of the feder. And if I want to shift at some point from Bolognese to Fiore or Lichtenhour, I'll just get another feder that's more appropriate for those styles rather than trying to get a one feder fits all compromise.✌

      @@thespadoneproject5352 Small feedback after I got it and used it in training: I love it! I cannot describe how happy I am when I use it. The oval grip is a bit flat and comfortable (it's the grip to select in my opinion), the cord grip is smooth and tight, the quillons and pommel fit the look perfectly and the blade is a joy. On length, I think this is perfect. I get that spadone feeling (the long grip plays a huge role in this) while still being able to use it in my garden without trimming the side hedges too much. One would be surprise how much reach a 104cm blade can have while doing some simple two-hander forms. My garden seemed much larger when I was only training sidesword. After I got it, I saw that Regenyei released a spatulated tip option. I usually like that more than back-folded, so maybe I would have gone for that, but I think that's a personal choice anyway. If anyone (like me 4 months ago) reads this... just go for this overall design, you will not regret it! 👍

    • @thespadoneproject5352

      The sword was heavily padded and was considered safe enough, and it was. Mobility was favored in order to leave the participants free to move as fast as possible. However who wanted to could use more protections. The rule set was: 1 hit and the picador is out, 2 hits on the montantero and he is out. 2 min max, if I remember correctly. Points were assigned according to hit given and taken and to survivors. No real game perimeter, the tournament was an experiment.

      I'm 190 cm and I think that there is no problem with that. Godinho have no strict statement about length. Of course the longer the blade the better the area control, but I'm the kind of person that would suggest to just begin picking what you like the most (or what you can afford at the moment if you do not want to wait too much in order to save some budget). This is more multi purpose. The replica-like one would not be my first choice if I had to choose. In fact my first montante was the old Regenyei trainer, more heavy but still Feder-like. With time you can build a personal tool gear with different options like I'm doing (heavy trainer, light trainer, replica…) but of course this is something that I do because I'm a fanatic xD

      The montantero needs freedom of performance in order to simulate the regra the right way, with speed and fast reactions. We work knowing that who fight around must keep a good distance not daring too much. In this case, Federico has more than 10 years in fencing and has good experience so he tried daring a bit more, but the situation was under control. We would not do anything that is out of one self-confidence. In other videos you can see jackets and masks: in those cases we work knowing that we can risk more.

      Mine is not, but Regenyei makes sharp weapons as well, for those who asks for it.
