BJJ Mental Models
Приєднався 19 лис 2019
A podcast exploring the conceptual side of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Steve Kwan discusses the mental models behind the gentle art.
Mini Ep. 18: Compression Choke Mechanics
In this week's mini-episode we discuss compression choke mechanics! Compression chokes involve squeezing your opponent's chest so tightly that their lungs can't expand to take in air. They're a bit silly and not high-percentage, but they're still worth knowing about so you don't wind up on the wrong end of someone else's compression choke highlight reel.

Mini Ep. 17: Air Choke Mechanics
Переглядів 4816 годин тому
In this week's mini-episode we discuss air choke mechanics! Air chokes involve cutting off your opponent's ability to breathe by either compressing their trachea ("windpipe") or covering their mouth. Air chokes often don't act as quickly as blood chokes, but there are ways to speed them up by triggering the gag reflex. We also talk about why air chokes are legitimate techniques and should not b...

Mini Ep. 16: Blood Choke Mechanics
Переглядів 10314 днів тому
In this week's mini-episode we discuss blood choke mechanics! This is the concept behind all chokes we'd classify as "carotid restraints," where compression on the carotid arteries cuts off blood flow to the brain. We'll discuss the simple "triangle around the head" concept that helps tighten all blood chokes including rear naked chokes, collar chokes, triangle chokes, and head and arm chokes. ...

Mini Ep. 15: Dominant Angles
Переглядів 8721 день тому
In this week's mini-episode we discuss dominant angles! The concept of dominant angles is more complicated than "being behind or beside your opponent." It's more about positioning your body relative to theirs such that their arms, legs, and other weapons can't come into play. Mini Ep. 14: Countergripping
Переглядів 11328 днів тому
In this week's mini-episode, we discuss countergripping! There are three ways to counter a grip: 1: breaking the grip (stripping their fingers), 2: inverting the grip (pummeling to make the grip our own), or 3: changing the angle (which can render the grip useless). In general, breaking the grip is the least efficient option, changing the angle is the most efficient, and inverting the grip is i...

Mini Ep. 13: Grips Dictate Position
Переглядів 113Місяць тому
In this week's mini-episode, we discuss one of Steve's favorite mental models: grips dictate position! As the name implies, whoever wins the grip fight in Jiu-Jitsu often dictates the position. Focus on winning the grip fight before attempting to advance position or secure a submission. Переглядів 79Місяць тому
In this week's mini-episode, we're discussing the anatomic hierarchy! The anatomic hierarchy is a simple but powerful mental model that organizes our body into six major tools, from strongest to weakest: our torso, our two legs, our two arms, and our head. Mini Ep. 11: Posts
Переглядів 58Місяць тому
In this week's mini-episode, we're discussing posts, the last of the six core mechanics of Jiu-Jitsu! Posts occur when you use an extremity of your body to connect with and base off a platform like the floor. Posts are important for maintaining your own base and creating opportunities to attack your opponent. This is the sixth in a six-part series of mini-episodes we're doing on the core mechan...

is a darce choke considered a blood choke?
Primarily yes, but the Darce uses several different choking mechanics. We'll be talking about hybrid chokes in an upcoming mini-episode.

I love the emphasis on building autonomous learners. That’s the whole core of how my school operates as well and I love seeing more and more like minded people steering the ship in this direction.
Why use the British pronunciation for lever? It seems a bit extra.
We're Canadian, sir 🤣
Awesome knowledge gems Mr thanks❤
Great content Good Sir❤❤❤
David is an incredible instructor. His approach to teaching kids was wonderful and my family will always be grateful for our time on the mat with him. Thanks for sharing
Thank you so much for the kind words. Means the world to me. Hope all is well.
I had the exact same situation after 8 yrs and being the first student. Dudes get on power trips and act like it’s high school
I'm sorry to hear that. Hope things are better now.
Loving your episodes with David. Can relate to them so much. Appreciate you for them 🔥🙏🏽💛🔥
Thank you so much!!
I honestly can’t believe more people haven’t watched this. Favorite position in all of jiu jitsu.
Josef Chen sent me here
He is my son
Why is the spotify version so low volume damn
That’s odd! Is the volume better when you listen here or in a different podcast app?
This is great 🔥🔥

Alignment = Posture Structure Base There is no submission ! It's a position It's a potision that you have taken away his 3 things. Base is what you apply force to: Maybe the floor , or the partner or even the wall.. • 🥋 Introduction to BJJ Mental Models: Steve and Matt Kwan discuss their backgrounds and introduce the podcast focused on mental models, strategies, and concepts in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. • 🤼 Diverse Training Backgrounds: The hosts highlight their unique approaches to Jiu-Jitsu-Steve as a hobbyist and Matt as a competitor. • 💡 Concept of Alignment: They introduce alignment in BJJ, explaining its components-posture, structure, and base-and its importance in maintaining advantageous positions. • 🏋️ Alignment Explained Scientifically: Matt describes how alignment principles relate to human biomechanics, using terms like levers and wedges to break down Jiu-Jitsu movements. • 🧠 Mental Models in Jiu-Jitsu: Steve discusses the concept of mental models, popularized in the business world, and their application in BJJ for effective learning and decision-making. • 📐 Posture, Structure, and Base: The hosts explain these three components of alignment-posture (spine alignment), structure (limb alignment), and base (ability to generate or absorb force). • 🦵 Using Levers in Jiu-Jitsu: Matt elaborates on how understanding and manipulating levers in the body can enhance control and efficiency in techniques. • 🦾 Force Vectors and Frames: The importance of recognizing and countering force vectors is discussed, alongside the use of frames to maintain alignment. • 🧩 Applying Alignment to Techniques: They provide examples of how alignment principles can be applied to specific techniques, such as armbars, to improve effectiveness and control. • 🔄 Phases of Guard: The three phases of guard-engagement, maintenance, and recovery-are detailed, emphasizing the importance of grip fighting and lever control from the start.
Thank you for this vid 🙇🙇🙇
Love this thought process I think this style of thinking plus drilling, studying etc just thinking of grappling in different ways is and amazing way to learn.
Problem with most instructionals are they are priced according to duration, or that is how it seems. Would rather learn 3 things that I know will work in different situations
Funny you bring that up, I was just discussing this with someone.
Wish I could give this episode more than one thumbs up. You unpacked lot of good stuff from learning dynamics to role of the instructor. If you get a chance read a bit of Paulo Freire’s theory about banking model of education vs problem based learning. I think it relates well to Eco and IP models.
Great episode! Really loved hearing this convo as a women who's been training for 5+ years
Agree 100%, a good coach knows when to give important details and when to keep their mouth shut and just let people work.
This is totally unrelated to your comment, but I just wanna point out that your name, Dave Jitsu, would roughly translate to "The Way of Dave."
@@bjjmentalmodels Thats good I’ll have to remember that one! Really enjoy your podcast. Keep up the good work.
I love Greg
Great conversation. I now know who the fuck Josh McKinney is 😂
Satire is the best reply to your critiques. Loved it gentlemen 🎉
my opinion, i love this, i want to see how far we can take jiu jitsu. especially with the unique chokes.
Excelent!!
Brilliant conversation! The idea communism concept explained was phenomenal by Steve!
Matt Jean is on the button right
Good one
I was listening this to sleep from the middle and was like WTF :O xDDD then figured this out and checked the date of adding this on Spotify then came to UA-cam for comments xdd
Great podcast.😊

Excellent follow-up to the last time Jozef was on.. Read through Diago's will to win since the first time around.
I'm convinced. From today on, only flying armbars and triangles for me...
Choke people from inside their guard lmao. I have a friend who tries to cross collar choke me every time I pass his guard and get side control lmao.
april fools ?
yes
10 min into thispodcast. I am now honeybadger.
🤣🤣🤣 Just 2 questions: 1) I publish in scientific research journals, can I maybe also use Reddit as a valid reference in my research articles? 2) Priit I bought many of your defensive strategy dvd's on Bjj Fanatics, if I show proof of purchase can I get a refund? even if it is helping my overall game?
Hi man! Been listening to your podcast with great joy. Thank you for all the content. I want to comment my thoughts on defense vs offence aspect of the jiu jitsu. As you talked about a year ago in f- your jiu jitsu episode, the thing that holds back a bjj practitioner most is his ego. And i think even if we want to, to put that ego away completely or majorly takes a great time. In this phase i really think the defensive side of the bjj helps. Because when you go for a submission you think the position you will be in if you fail, and it is often a pin. If you cant picture yourself getting out of that pin you may restrain your attacks and thats where the knowledge of defense in the scope of pin or submission escapes helps. Like if you have confidence to escape every disadventageous position you can try submissions and be aggressive without holding back. The thing i think what must not be done in defence is staying in that disadventegous position and stalling yourself. Thank you for the great content again and have a great day.
Can't wait to see this info
Listening from middle Vermont! If you're ever in the area come and visit my school! Rutland BJJ Club. Cheers!
Hey people give this video a thumb up it has so much great content, if you listen carefully.
Thank you BJJ Mental Models, this is great 🔥🙏🏼💪🏼👊🏼
Fantastic. My Professor recommended this channel (he's an avid listener). This was the first video I listened to. Outstanding. Thank you both!
If your partner is doing it wrong you better be able to show him why not tell him why.
What a great channel - found this recently from a different podcast that Josef Chen mentioned you guys on. Awesome content!!
Thank you! We focus mostly on the podcast feed and our Premium services and haven't really done a lot to target UA-cam, but we might have to change that. Getting an interview like this with a GOAT like Marcelo is a huge moment for us - definitely one of the highlights of my BJJ career.
Gamechanging!
how is this choke legal as rob says. based on ibjjf rulebook.i want to practice it but i cant justify it to my gym "When an athlete strangles his or her opponent ,without using the gi, with one or both hands around the opponent’s neck or applies pressure to the opponent’s windpipe using the thumb."
The answer here is sort of a technicality: you can't attempt to choke someone with your hand, but you CAN post on someone's throat, and if gravity does the work, it's legal. That said, in a high-stakes tournament you could be playing with fire here, especially in the early days before this choke becomes more mainstream. It could be really hard for the ref to determine your actual intent with a submission like this, and I wouldn't be surprised if a ref who hasn't seen it before chooses to DQ you.
