Creating Efficient 3DGS Models Using iPhone LiDAR
Using the LiDAR and photo data from an iPhone, I successfully created a 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) model. While professional LiDAR equipment like the RTC360 provides higher quality and accuracy, the iPhone’s LiDAR offers sufficiently precise data and serves as a fast and cost-effective alternative. Additionally, 3D reconstruction is possible in diverse environments, such as snow-covered scenes and nighttime settings.

Can you share the process on how you combine the lidar data and images? I currently Just take photo's/video and process in Metashape for alignment. Aligned photos trained into 3dgs "works great for scenes beyond iphone lidar range" It would be nice to do smaller scenes such as playgrounds with the lidar. Tanks

@ can you explain how you get the LiDAR data and corresponding images from iPhone and get the image set pre aligned with it?
@@JvanBeets yeah so with RTC360, you can register the scans with something like Autodesk RECAP, then export a .e57 import the .e57 into Reality Capture align the LIDAR pointcloud, export the component in a separate Reality Capture file, align the photos and export a component in a new Reality Capture bring both components in and align them together if the point cloud is a colored one, then you can usually just hit align. if it's a black and white point cloud then you'll have to choose control points to bring them together

Yes, that's correct. Our team secured the source using a Sony a7 camera and a DJI Mavic 3 drone.
