Scottish Country Dance is a joy. By sharing video of dances I hope to spread the joy and make it easier for people to learn unfamiliar dances.
The Somerset Children's Reel
At the 2024 Toronto Family Christmas Dance we had lots of beginners, and a few quick-on-the-uptake, first-time-at-a-dance university students. Great fun!

This dance is very popular in Toronto. It's easy for beginners and fun for all dancers. It was devised by Toronto dancers Mairi and Andrew Collins. Mairi asked Laird Brown, leader of the Scotch Mist band, to include John Philip Sousa's tune, 'Liberty Bell'. a.k.a. the Monty Python theme.

March 10, 1961, a CBC Toronto TV show visited the Scottish country dance group at Calvin Presbyterian in Toronto. It's a lively, full-of-joy account of the group. Scottish country dance is still active at Calvin Presbyterian Church in the same hall, virtually unchanged to this day.

Scrub ahead to 2:55 to skip the intro and admire the dancing. The principal performers in this ceilidh act at the 2016 TAC Summer School have reflected (for 8 years!!), and now enthusiastically endorse publishing this significant contribution to Celtic culture awareness. It's amazing what can happen at a Summer School ceilidh.

Laird Brown...son of Bobbie Brown (Scottish Accent)...although..I did not expect the Jig for Judy (by Graeme Mitchell from Scotland)cos its a very modern tune In Scotland popular.
Well danced ALL!
Intro is Balcombie House
Hello Robert, thanks for the video. I forwarded it to the drummer Fred Collins who was playing on the broadcast. Happy to say Fred is well and still drumming.
So wonderful thanks Rob
Pour mon enterrement ce sera joué. J adore
A interesting way to polish a floor ...!😮
🎉
Really great effort but would have looked less ragged had the set not spread so wide. Everyone ended up having to play catch-up!
Fantastic. Young and not so young. Dizzy just watching Mama turning.
So curious about where the name came from? In my experience, most Fairbridges and Fairbridge things are related to me (I have family records going WAY back)!
@tessfairbridge, visit www.scottish-country-dancing-dictionary.com/dance-crib/fairbridge-reel.html and scroll down.
@@robertlockhart7027 thank you! The town of Fairbridge in Australia (and the one in Canada also) were indeed named for my grandfather's cousin: Kingsley Ogilvie Fairbridge (not to be confused with the many other family members who bear the name Kingsley, including my uncle, brother, and son; he's obviously haunting us 😅). I see the reel was named for the town! How cool.
That was the best, love the exaggerating Michael Flatley pointing. Great job men! 😂🤣😅🤣😂😅
Dear Mr Lockhart...so happy and pleased with all of your GREAT postings of Scottish Dance Music,..but.......am I right in the assumption,I take it,...that you have no database of the tunes played in your postings, and that's why you didn't answer me? Right? If so....fully accepted! We can also enjoy WITHOUT names of tunes, can't we??
Dear @shandfan, the tunes used are solely the province of the musicians. As dancers, we may or may not recognize them, and if we do, we think, “oh, that’s the tune for Bratach Bana!” or Davy Nick Nack, or whatever, and the signature tune for a dance is not necessarily eponymous with the title of the dance. My favourite example of that is the signature tune for De’il Amang The Tailors, which rejoices in the name “The Fairy Dance” . . . At least as it’s commonly presented in Toronto. Might be different elsewhere. The RSCDS does often specify tunes for dances but musicians may choose otherwise. If you buy a SCD recording, the liner notes of the CD typically list tunes and sources for the various dances. Glad you enjoy my video posts. All credit to Toronto musicians and dancers who generally ‘get’ it, and stay cheerful when they don’t.
Just love this looks so simple to follow -- well then again I would probably mess it up
Fab 😂
😂🤣
Oh how wonderful! Thank you for joining us Mayor Chow, we are so glad you enjoyed yourself.
Thank you, this made me smile.
🤎 i like it! Love country dances... we played it when we were childs an we mus do it for ever!! thanks for sharing!
out of focus
Murray River by Graham Townsend.
Kate Dalrymple. The signature tune for every aired Scottish Dance Programme in Scotland.
Great band.Is it Berkeleys??
Great playing by Don.He is said to be connected with Stan Hamilton (and The Clansmen) I ve got two LP's by Stan on the Oriole Label And yes,Stan is in turn part of Bobbie Brown's "Scottish Accent".(Ontario?) Which ist the only overseas way of contact,we have with Aberdeen BBC Radio Scotland. Must tell,I enjoy all these postings IMMENSELY!!! GREAT thanks!!!!!!!
Addition.....the only contact,...means....as far as I know.
Don is GREATTT!!!!!!!! What good bands and good authentic material up here.Things are hugely moving better than in Scotland.Probably due to the fact, that there is no pressure by BBC as was the case in Scotland..BBC tried to get rid of the accordion in SDB's and to promote their Celtic Connections.Fortunately they have given up the battle. Was a great shame!
Recognizing GOW's Reverrent!!!! Eight Men Of Moidart.Great tunes and superb playing by Don.
When we used to do that in Scotland it used to encourage the earth worms to come to the surface and you had to be careful not to squash them. Dan McLean in Port Glasgow.
Stan Hamilton is(was?) pianist in the Bobbie Brown Band often called "The Scottish Accent"..Just this branch had overseas connenctions with the Aberdeen based BBC Radio Scotland. Stan also produced records under his own name on the Oriola Label.Stan and the Clansmen, later Stan and the Flying Scotsmen. Greetings from Scotland.
Excellent 6piece line up Band and playing good material.❤❤❤
The 3th tune is in Scotland called "little Pickle".unknown to me if Trad or modern. And the following is "Hollyroad House. Here the same question.
Don Bartlet??? Great choice of material and playing with good harmony. The ambition up here is clearly greater than in Scotland.Where BBC was interferring by commercial promoting of their Celtic Connections(Celtic Confecrtionaries, called by the initiated). As a result great reputed tunes were for times locked up.A downright shame! Heaven thanks they've lost the battle.
Paddy Whack!!!!!Great!!!!
Forget to ask you ...what's the name of the first Strathspey tune, the intro tune? One of the greatest I ever heard!!!!!
Superb playing and many tunes never heard anymore today!!!! GREAT!!!!
Addition..that was in Scotland, where BBC interferred. They wanted to get rid of accordions and lock up lots of good tunes in order to promote their Celtic Connections(or Celtic Confectionaries,as called by initiated)Heaven thanks they've lost the battle.
Beautiful dancing from the young people here. Really enjoyed this, so nice to see young people dancing at all!
Good dancing but really great music!!
The good old material returns in these broadcasts,at last!!!!!
Absolutely beautiful!!
My wife and I went to beginners class but then we were told it an advanced class no wonder we were getting so mixed up with the routine.

Learning this at school ❤
Bravo!
The little girl is cracking me up!
❤❤❤❤❤
Меняются века, страны, танцевальные направления, но неизменно одно - на балу не хватает кавалеров 👀
If I buy a kilt will my old knees get better ? They’re enjoying themselves to a great band and that’s what’s important.
Where is the little girl who danced so beautifully in so many of your previous videos, she was a joy to watch. Dan McLean in Scotland.
Beautiful and lovely. I love Scottish Dancing
me too!!!!
Neither do the dancers, but they’re having a grand time! Long may they continue to enjoy these outings.😊
Pity the musicians are not named, good playing and choice of tunes
Better than in Scotland , owing to....BBC pressure ; .BBC were against accordion in order to make way for the "Celtic Confectionaries"as called by the initiated.Fortunately they 've lost the battle,as a result, good old tunes, once locked up for several decades, will come back again.
It certainly is!
