Travelling with Lizi and Paul
Australia
Приєднався 15 лют 2024
G'day! We are Lizi and Paul and we would like to share our travels around Australia. Currently in early January 2025 and we are preparing our 3 month trip in Tasmania. After that there are other trips planned, but plans change!
Our setup is fairly "out of the box" with a 2024 Ford Ranger Wildtrak that only has a few electrical mods to accommodate a second battery and the ARB Dual Compressor. As yet no bull bar, drawers or canopy. The 2018 Jayco Journey Outback 19.61-2 has only Jayco accessories and runs mainly on gas (cooker, fridge, hot water, heating). Electrics to power the lights, USB plugs and water pump. 240 litres of water in 3 tanks. DO35 Hitch. We are pretty happy so far!

EP8 - Ford Ranger and Jayco Weights - FRONT Axle Limits Bullbar Choice !
After the disaster that forced us to sell the Pajero NX, we got a Ford Ranger Wildtrak. This is the story of the professional weighing of the new setup. We did have surprises, the biggest being the issue with the front axle weight available for a bull bar.
The summary starts at 15:43.
Typo at 12.26 - we raised the hitch 100mm NOT 10mm !

We get the car and caravan weighed and have to face the cruel facts about towing weights. What started as a peace-of-mind exercise ended up as a roller coaster of emotions and an automotive surprise. EP1 - Dorrigo: Waterfalls and Rainforests!
Переглядів 1589 місяців тому
Easter 2024 - we did a 6 day trip in the Dorrigo NSW region to visit waterfalls and do some great walks. This is Episode 1 (EP1) of our series showcasing the Mid North Coast of NSW.
I have a Triton GSR and tow a Golf Tourer 556 caravan (2600gvm). I hit a roo recently and damaged the front bumper and nudge bar. I decided to fit an ARB bullbar instead of submitting an insurance claim. To compensate the front axle weight, I have fitted a 300ah battery and a 3kw inverter in the tub over the rear axle. There is also a 50L fridge, electric roller shutter, racks on the tub and a 200watt solar panel. The accessories on the rear weigh more than the bullbar and we have mains power when camping off grid. I haven't had my combination weighed like you did but I did take it to a weigh bridge. With the caravan attached and the wife and I in the car, it weighed about 2500kg and the caravan was about 2300kgs. I did, however, upgraded the suspension as the standard springs and shocks were not happy with the new constant loads.
@@danielnicoll5981 Thanks for sharing! That is also what we think, if we go the bullbar route it either needs to be light or have compensating weight in the rear. For is that needs to be more than 200kg
I don’t get the obsession with bull bars. I’ve been travelling Australia for 40 years and never had an incident where a bull bar helped. In the early days my 4x4s were purchased used and all came with a bull bar already fitted, but once I could afford to buy new cars I’ve had no bar. I currently have a 2020 Land Cruiser Sahara, a reasonably expensive vehicle and it doesn’t have a bull bar. To me, most look bad to hideous and certainly do nothing to enhance the look of the vehicle. My friends ask “but what if I hit something”, that’s what insurance is for. “Oh, but a bull bar might make the difference between being able to keep going or being stranded.” Really? That’s a pretty slim scenario. Come to think of it, I don’t think any of my friends have had an incident where a bull bar has made a difference. If I lived out in the bush and traveled a lot at night then I would consider one, but I live in the city and when I’m travelling I avoid driving at high risk of animal strike times. Living in the city I’m more likely to hit a pedestrian and god forbid I hit a person with a Land Cruiser, let alone a Land Cruiser with a bull bar. Modern vehicles are continually getting better at avoiding hitting pedestrians and large animals, (I don’t think they will ever detect a Wombat though) and bull bars can interfere with these devices. That’s my rant, safe travels to everyone, bull bar or not.
Thanks for your insights. As responded to a previous comment - we are not sure we want the bull bar yet and will go our 3 months in Tassie without it.
Interesting video mate, its great that you have pointed out this issue with front axle weights as not many people are aware. Certainly concerning to see that you have Ford are recommending a Bar that would put you over front Axle limits (not even considering the lights, winch, recovery points, bash plates etc. that many will add) and also that the 4WD shop has no idea that they are technically making vehicles unroadworthy.
Thanks for watching. Yes concerning indeed. We'll need to consider the GVM upgrade if we want a steel bullbar.
Great video. Thanks for your time team
Thanks Michael - you're the expert here and your advice was absolutely invaluable. Now we just have to figure out what to do :-)
Oh Lord, 50 years after europe the australians thinks about towing weights .....
Yes, it's very different and Europe has lighter caravans.
Really the weight of tyre and wheels should come off the axle weight. That weight is not on the axle, wheels and tyres are holding the weight.
We followed the expert and the way the vehicle is weighed by the authorities, which includes anything on the axle.
Understand that, but this is the problem when all things are not considered properly. Axle weight should be taken from the hub, wheel and tyres should be legally rated to take the axle load. Doing it this current way is revenue raising when defect notices start being handed out.
@@Undies79 You are absolutely technically correct. BUT whether this was ever a consideration I am not aware of but in the road transport sector where it would have been argued if anywhere it is taken as the load measured under the tyres. The European trucks have always struggled with front axle weights and the weight of the tyres/wheels would have been a welcome adjustment for them, but it is NOT taken into account. So the reality is that it is measured under the tyres, whether technically correct or not.
@@ianloy1854 Technicalities will save you in a court of law, if they ever tried to blame it on an accident happening. Engineers of the accessories and Manufacturers of the vehicles should be pushing back on this. Atleast 70-80kg of weight that should not be counted on the axle load.
Great information. I just got a 2024 Ford Ranger platinum v6 with ARB summit bullbar with recovery points, ARB under protection panels, ARB 140lt tank, and clear vision tow mirrors. I wondering if my GVM is something to look into.
Great you enjoyed it. A professional weighing session is very informative and educational - would recommend it.
Did you have water in the van tanks?
Yes all 3 tanks full, 240 litres. We also had more water to simulate food and clothes. The van was not really our worry as weighed before. It as really how things changed by subbing a Pajero for a Ranger.
@@TravellingLP i was interested because I have an Outback 19.6.2 and when I got it I had to ditch the front generator/tool box as it was overweight on the ball. In have a Ford Everest but am not happy with the way the van tows. Your experience with the weight at the back and over the drawbar is very interesting as I have added a lightweight box on the back bumper but it holds a baby Weber that is failry heavy.
@@rossdavey428 We looked at a 19.61-2 that had a large toolbox on the front, but the ball was already close to 350kg without any of our stuff, so we passed that one. At the time we were towing with a Pajero NX that would have been way overweight. Really recommend going to a competent weigher for advice.
@@TravellingLP I did, after I took the heavy toolbox off and weights were good (but I dont recall him measuring the difference between front and back van wheels). I then put the rear plastic toolbox on and have not had a chance to re weigh the van. I think the baby Q Weber might be too much weight on the back.
We are also in the process of purchasing a new tow vehicle when getting a quote at our local Ford dealer for a Wildtrak we were told that when fitting an ARB bullbar (summit Sahara bar) they would have to remove a large metal bar at the front before adding the bull bar and so the nett additional weight would only be around 20kg. Has this ever been mentioned to you either by Ford or ARB, it may be a question to ask. We would certainly like this confirmed as well. Your video was very educational, thank you.
Thanks for watching and your comment! On the ARB site they say that the approximate weight of the Summit II bar, chassis mounts and fitting kit is 79kg. Approximately 17kg is removed from the vehicle for fitment of the bar - so net is 62kg on paper. Clearly the bar can be used if you have a GVM upgrade such as the second stage Lovells which adds 150kg. It also costs $6k. Both Ford and ARB could be clearer on that point.
I noticed he was measuring the tow ball height while the van was sitting on the scales did he reduce the measurement taking in the height of the scales that the wheels were sitting on?
I also pointed that out and Michael indicated he was compensating for that.
Outstanding Weighter there, man knows his shit!
If you get a suspension lift upgrade, they upgrade the front axle weight. Pretty sure it was 150kg. I had mine done and got a certificate with it. Not that I know everything about it. It is the arb summit II on a 2024.5 Wildtrak
Yes, Wildtrak 24.5 and Summit II (was the plan). That is correct the Lovells 7t GCM upgrade has that increase and costs about $6k - it would be fair for Ford and ARB to be clear on that point.
So a standard ute can not have a BB . Seems silly
It does indeed! especially since Ford recommend the ARB Summit II bar. It means you also need the $6k GVM upgrade which increases the front axle capacity sufficiently. I think it is a bit misleading by the manufacturer.
Great information thank you
I would ask the question… do I really need a bar. We have the Everest and I have no intention on fitting one…. 99% of our driving is during the day and in our travels parked by about 3pm After having bars fitted to previous cars I feel I’ll save the money for other things
An excellent question! we have thought about this and have already decided that for our travels in Tasmania a bull bar is not necessary. However, later we intend to travel in Western Australia and South Australia and we are looking at more remote travel. A family member who recently did the Oodnadatta Track and the Strzelecki Track noted emus on the road and had some near misses.
@ I’ve done the oonadatta track recently also and i live in WA… done the Gibb River road … well many places in WA & the eastern states…. So after all this travelling… it’s a no from me… we are soon to retire to do further travelling.. here & abroad.
I personally would have thought the easier option would have been to change vans??
It's a long story! we wanted a full-size van, dual axle and independent suspension - so we got what we wanted there, without really thinking through the detail consequences. Lighter vans exist of course - but generally minus the independent suspension and going to pop top - that would easy save 500-600kg, but it would have been a big compromise for us given the amount of travel and the roads we intend to travel. The story's not finished though - we we'll re-weigh on 22/12 before deciding what accessories we can add.
First No power water at the showground?
Thanks for watching. Yes, we had power and water at the showground, but not in the National Park at Bald Rock. There was nothing wrong with the showground, just very wet underfoot!
Do you have the power fold mirrors?
No they are not. I've since traded the car as I need a stronger vehicle - whole video on the topic 😢
Top choice will serve you well ❤
Thanks mate - hope so, we are off shortly again!
Enjoy your travels. We went through a similar exercise. We had a 200 series Landcruiser which was always on the edge of its permitted weights towing our caravan even with a GVM upgrade (3850kgs). I have always a great believer of not having the tail wagging the dog (tow vehicle being heavier than towed unit). We ended up changing over to a American 3/4 tonne HD truck which for us was a great decision. We no longer have to worry about weighs so much!
Thanks for your insights - it's really a minefield, weights....
Great choice of tow tug. We have the v6 and we had the smallest Lovells GVM GCM upgrade and it tows beautifully. The upgrade is very beneficial our van has an ATM of 3400Kg and our wildtrak has a GVM 3505Kg the GCM is now7005Kg we use about 16L/100k in tow haul mode. All the best for your touring/towing.
Sounds great! our fuel consumption look around 20lt/100 for the moment, hoping that will go down
@@TravellingLP We sit on 93KPH by the speedo if we sit on 100 we also use about 20 per hundred. ours has done just over 5000km.
Great suggestion thanks!
Weights can be a real problem. We returned from the uk 5 years ago now. We landed in Perth and we bought a lovely car a 2016 Pajero. We went to a large dealer in Perth and asked for a caravan that it could tow legally. We were sold a Kokoda tribute 1 a nice caravan and we were assured our was legal to tow. However at no point was it legal to tow that van. Something we were unaware of until we got to Queensland! It actually towed amazingly well but it was not legal. It's the 180kg allowed ball weight over 2500kg that gets you on the Pajero 😢
Yes, understand - the Pajero NX tows very well, the issue is the rear axle limit. I think if one can buy a lighter van - say 2.5t ATM and maybe a Tare under 2t with a 130kg Tare ball weight the Pajero tows really well and legally. The engine is powerful enough and if a throttle controller is added then the power is available on demand - no lag. I hope you managed to settle the issue and now either have a larger tow vehicle or smaller van.
@@TravellingLP the dealer was useless we now have a Discovery 4 great car but not without it's issues 😉
@@plasmaDave Should of bought an Isuzu MUX.
Super danke war sehr eindrücklich und toll🎉
Thanks Manu!
The rear axl was over by 35kgs and everything else under. In total under by 389 kgs, according to your chart. So has me confused as to why you are saying its a massive problem? Was it just the water? Saving 40 kgs off the tow ball? Or was it the pile of goods that you didn't want to leave behind?
:-) Good question - basically we could have got under the rear axle limit by removing the second row seats and the roof rack, but still leaving behind stuff we want to take with us. Originally the car was destined to be a 4WD camping vehicle, and it MIGHT tow a camper trailer.... things worked out differently!
A bit concerned about the advice to compensate the heavier ball weight by adding weight to the rear. This is never a good idea as it creates a dumbbell effect where the van in a sway situation rotates around the van's axles and so spears the whole rig off the road. Weight on the back of a long van effectively triples in inertia and so should be kept to a minimum. Perhaps you have changed this now you have the Ranger.
Yes, the Ranger is totally different setup and the TBM can go to 350kg. Basically though, there is a formula for weight distribution, if you add 10kg to the back bar it takes of about 5kg from the ball. I'm not an expert on this but would think it's all about balance - I would not add 100kg to the back bar to take 50kg of the ball.... hence in our case with the Pajero we drained the front water tank to mainly remove weight. New weighing planned on 8 November ! (with the Ranger!)
Great video
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it
The do not over take turning vehicle sticker. Is to high up and on the wrong side. 400 to 1500 is preferred on the outer edge left hand side of vehicle/ caravan. 2000 being the max height. VSB12 version 12
Thanks for the feedback Mick_4591
ATM minus GTM equals ball weight. Those chart figures after rearranging are out by 59kgs.
Hi Media1788au - the 59 Kg are what we needed to remove to get close to legal. This is now history with a new vehicle which we will re re-weighing shortly :-)
@@TravellingLP good on you for going the heavier tow vehicle... 40yrs in the heavy vehicle industry and I cringe at the thought of border line weights and tow vehicles being tampered with with upgrades and sometimes lighter than the van. Just saying, if you get the same person to weigh your vehicles, get someone else in the know to check the chart afterwards. I have been getting trucks and caravans weighs done for years and sometimes they're in error. Safety first, rules second is my philosophy.
I would be getting a lift or heavier rear suspension as looks like it’s down a bit and we did same and GVM upgrade with suspension and shocks etc and has made an incredible difference 😎
well done for being smart and getting a better tow rigg--- many more should do it, you see clowns towing 3500kg vans in a mux
@@thelonewolf666 thanks mate. It was a difficult decision but in the long term it makes a lot of sense
The Ranger and an MUX have the same towing capacity.
They have the same towing capacity.
Thanks Paul and Lizi, will have to reach out to Graham if I ever need to get my weights done!
He is really easy to deal with and the advice is good. He spent over 2 hours with us and we were still only charged the standard fee - highly recommended.
Thanks Paul, very informative. Jayco should send you some caravans!
That would be cool! But we also like the freedom to say what we like!
