      In Paderewski's and Oborin's editions the tempo of this etude is indicated as 120 bpm. Cortot in his edition didn't indicate bpm at all indicating only the character as "Agitato". So, I decided to adhere 160 bpm as indicated in Scholz'es edition. On one hand it's a kind of a compromise on the other hand it's easier not to hit a wrong note in this "not too fast" tempo.)))

    You always make everything look so easy when we know it isn’t. This is one of my favorite Rachmaninoff pieces. If you ever come to the USA there is a great recital hall in Raleigh,NC with a concert grand Bosendorfer. It is called Bosendorfer Hall. If that is not your cup of tea, there are also Yamaha’s and Fazioli’s. There is a concert next week with a great program of Mendelssohn, Liszt, Brahms, Chopin and Gershwin.

    Wow! You played it! It was awesome. I like your left hands stability, you really put that staccatissimo bass over the left hands chords and it must be really hard to play that fast jumps piano. Right hand on the other side pointing out that legato melody meanwhile playing staccato. It is one of my favorite chopin etudes. I've already seen the answer to your sitting height but it feels so uncomfortable to play this piece low on the seat. I feel like your arms are not only moving the hands left and right on the keyboard but also keeping them high up which seems like lot's of energy and tension to me. I know you play the best position for you but I wanted to mention this detail for a long time. Thank you for this energetic etude. I guess you've completed the Chopin etudes right?

    • @alterego.sergeydotsenko
      @alterego.sergeydotsenko 28 днів тому

      First of all thanks for your compliments. This etude is really "pain in the ass" (forgive me that liberty). Apart from the jumps in the left hand to combine two excluding each other things - staccato and legato in the upper voice one has to be very inventive with the pedaling both connecting notes and making chords sound staccato. As for my sitting position, yes, I answered that question before. The only thing I have to say is that I'm sorry if it gives you an uncomfortable feeling. Earlier I had played sitting higher but then I had to change my sitting position. I have played only 20 Chopin's etudes so far. 4 have left. If I have enough time I'll try to complete them but for sure I don't know if I will.

      @alterego.sergeydotsenko Місяць тому

      Yes I play a digital piano. But to tell the truth I don't like the sound that you hear in the UA-cam version. The thing is that the UA-cam platform has a tendency to distort the sound in different ways. For example it distorted the sounds of my 3 performances (etudes no 4, 5 and 12) making them sound 5 times louder than in the normal way. In spite of considerable numbers of views I had to delete and publish again no 4 and 12 so far. No 5 I'll also delete and publish again if I can find a spare time. For the time being you may listen to the playlist and compare the loudness of, say, no 4, 5 and 6 and you'll understand what I mean. By the way would you mind writing to me and telling whether this sound disproportion of no 5 really takes place on your gadget?

    Great as always. There is one thing that I still don't understand. Why are we slowing instantly like fermata at the intro chords? Like if you are playing the descending left hand with 1 beat(4th) sus instead of half beat(8th). Most pianist use this instant slowing between chords. Is this because of the accent? Thank you for this emotional etude.

    • @alterego.sergeydotsenko

    i know it is a matter of personal preference and I wish I could play this piece just tenth as good as you can, but during all the piece my hands were twitching for a defibrillator or anything that could even out the tempo a bit so that it does not sound like a rather drunk one-legged pirate trying to climb an icy ladder. 😀 I strongly believe that this majestic melody NEEDS a steadier tempo, no matter great feelings and all. I would not bother writing such things but I really like your other 😀 interpretations, so a discussion could be well worth. Thank you for sharing your music!

    I always think about Chopin imagines himself riding a horse as a knight while playing this etude. He wasn't a knight or horseman but I think he dreamed about it. I am aware none of these etude titles are given by Chopin but it really matches with the piece. I like the new angles! One more thing I must say I your playing is very nice. But I feel like 0:43 is the place where I lost the illustration of Horse galloping because of pedal. I feel like there must be a tiny moment of silence like horses running, when they run there should be no sound when all of their hoofes are on air. At 1:13 you showed me that you know what I mean! Your playing reminds me of Pollini's. But your clarity is better in my opinion. Meanwhile, I am trying to start playing Czerny's etudes. Which etude should I start with? Op. 139 or op. 599? Thank you for the butterfly etude. Really made my day better!

      Thanks for your compliments. As for "clarity" apart from a couple of wrong notes I took when recording this etude it's OK. By the way this etude is quite challenging and I would indicate it having level 8 and not 7 as indicated at Henle's. As for Czerny's etudes I'm not a big specialist in them. I played neither 139 nor 599 opuses and from 740 op I played only about a dozen. Nevertheless those several etudes were enough for me to understand the considerable usefulness of Czerny's etudes. So, you may start from anyone you want.

      Unfortunately I've never played Hanon's exercises. Better to say I had that scores but just tried a couple of pages. Anyway these exercises proved to be quite good according to many opinions. As for me if it comes to exercises I'd prefer Czerny's etudes for example. There is a kind of music at least. As for losing "gentle presses" and so on I'd rather abstain from going into details because such kind of issues are too complicated to answer in one message. I can only tell you one thing. If you feel the necessity to practice Hanon's exercises and develop the strength and agility of your fingers go on. "Gentle presses" can wait.

    Very well done! I like your rubato. But I prefer to play the main theme without rubato. I feel like rhythm is the beauty in main theme

      I AM a pianist who's life was not connected with music as far as strange it might sound. What's more important I'm a musician and this doesn't depend whether one's life was or wasn't connected with music. Music always was and is incide me. Thank you for your high appraisal of my playing.
