Waiting for a movie about him. Before Chadwick Boseman died, I thought he'd be the perfect choice of actor
What an extraordinary man Mr. Sweat was. He made me cry when he said " I don't care if I am rubbing a Claimer I check them all in the morning to see if they have any heat".😢 and his description of Big Red Hoof and Big Red being "PERFECTION" 😭 . I recall reading an Baltimore Sun Article when they were at the Belmont Race. Mr. Sweat said all he could say when Big Red was coming around the stretch by 20 length was Don't Fall, Come on Home", "Looks like he heard me" He said he didn't become tearful until he realizes Big Red had broken records. Then there was nterview with his Baby Sister when they came up from South Carolina to Visit him and attend the Derby. She said her brother was beside himself. He started yelling " Go Baby Go! and "That's my Baby" That my Baby". Mr. Sweat was definitely a horse whisperer. He loved Big Red and Big Red loved him. His family said Big Red death was devastating to him and it took a toll. He felt had he been there he could have saved him.
Thank you Eddie gor your Impeccable care of Secretariat snd Riva. It hroke my heart ehen you parted with them. I wished so much that you remained with them.😢
You touched Gods horse Eddie with Love
Just learning about Secretariat in 2024 and the incredible comarderie of people around him. There needs to be a full-length documentary on Eddie Sweat...and that he lived near Lucien Lauren as a youngster and that Lucien Lauren hired him then....a match destined in the stars.
I would give anything to have known anyone who knew Secretariat. What it was like to be so close to perfection.
As a native born country boy brought up in horse racing , the finest compliment I can ever give anyone is to say they were a good horseman - Mr. Eddie Sweat , you were a good horseman
What a lovely man Mr. Sweat must have been. The book “The Horse God Built” is a beautiful tribute to horses and their people and in particular it’s a tribute to the bond between Mr. Sweat and Secretariat. A wonderful book.
I know Eddie Schwartz sister her name is Geraldine she lives in Florida and I'm always communicating with her either by letter or calling her she is such a sweetheart Eddie was not treated right he is the reason that Secretariat was so successful he was the one that slept with that horse groomed that horse fed that horse and love that horse more than anyone else it is such an honor to know Geraldine and still be able to communicate with her God bless you Geraldine Bob Welch
It broke my heart to read that Eddie Sweat died a pauper after having worked so hard.
If you look at Secretariat's two year old win pictures, you'll see a different groom. Then, he would have been with the three year old, Riva. You can't be two places at once.
Clock the arms on Eddie. he almost as muscular as Big Red.. Wonderful quite gentle man with very special hands.. He read horses body language and somehow connected with them mentally.. If the term horse whisperer was coined for anyone its Eddie Great to see history looking back kindly on its man who had more to do with Big Reds success than anyone. I dont know much about his later life but always hope some of the wealth generated by this monster horse found its way to this loyal and unique man ..RIP Eddie
There is a wonderful book “The Horse that God Built”. Most of the story, other than the races, is about the bond between Big Red and Eddie. I recommend it.
I always admired watching Eddie with Secretariat. They were so in tune. Best friends act like that. It's an absolute pleasure to watch these clips. There will never be another Secretariat nor will there ever be another Eddie Sweat. May you both rest in peace
He never called the horse secretariat! He called him Big Red! He loved that horse and the horse loved him❤️❤️❤️❤️
I know a lot about Eddie Sweat.
I regret that he worked so hard and died destitute. I don’t know the reasons but it was hurtful to read.
Thank you Eddie.
Muito linda homenagem
Thanks Eddie for helping make Big Red the greatest race horse in history! They should have had your bronz bust outside of the Belmont race track along with your best friend!
He was a great groom
I got to know "shorty" when I was assistant trainer to Richard Destasio and he worked for us in the late 80's. A true gentleman and a terrific horseman.
I never knew this story. Wow!
ironic that a horse with such wonderful feet, died from complications of laminitis....
Not young that is what my father and his many friends felt when it was announced our beloved Big Red was diagnosed with that Ailment and was euthanized. Like Eddie his father was part Cherokee and an herbals. Thanks to Eddie's father's teachings Eddie was an exceptional horseman who came to the job with much knowledge on horses and horse health. In another book Eddie talk about how he took care of a horse that was unsound with bad legs by using herbs. He said the horse got better and ran good for him winning four out of five races he ran. He said right then he knew the power of rubbing horses. Those around Eddie said he had saved Big Red life more than once by providing 24/7 care to him. Fans of Big Red were apprehensive about him going to a large Breeding Farm giving their reputation of not having much time for the horses because there were too many. The Vet that performed Big Red autopsy said that his laminitis was the worst he had seen. He believed Big Red contracted the sickness by an anomaly in the grass brought on by the frost. The diagnosis and explanation given is exactly why Fans wanted and wished Eddie had accepted the offer from Seth Hancock so he could be close to Big Red and Riva. The explanation and severity of his diagnosis pretty much tells us Big Red was not receiving the best of care. In this Book Eddie said he checked the horses legs and hoofs in the morning for the slightest sign of warmest or sign of trouble. He said he didn't care if they were claimers or not he checked them all. What my Father and his friends were angry about was although Big Red enjoyed Running and playing in his paddock, he should not have been turned out on grass following heavy rains or frost because chances are excellent that the chemistry of the grass will change and there will be growth of weeds that pose a threat to humans as well as animal health. That is why He and his friends never turned our fleet of horses out in the grass paddock following a frost, the other concern was the horse could slip and fall. Instead they turned them out in the dirt paddock for seven days The reason being any anomaly(weeds) in the grass paddock would begin to show themselves. My father, his father and his father brother would go out to the grass paddock and position themselves in a line side by side space out and literally walked from end to end checking the grass for weeds. Any weeds found were dug out from the roots and placed in large bags. Eddie definitely would have had this knowledge and Big Red would have lived on into old age One would think a large Breeding place would have the knowledge and means to take these measures, they had tractors, sitting lawn mowers etc. But again it comes down to manpower . That's why Fans are sadden by Big Red contracting this Ailment and ultimately death. Eddie's family said the death of his Old friend was devastating and took a toll on him. He felt had he been there he would have saved Big Red.
Eddie eas vital fir Secretariat to be the winner he was. No question this man had the velvet touch with horses. ❤
One of the most awesome grooms in history. Everybody gives the trainer all the credit, but it's the grooms that keep em right. Great groom keeps great horses great.
I've always wondered what it would be like to visit Mr Sweat and watch him take care of horses and listen to his wisdom.
Eddie Sweat was to Secretariat like Tom Smith was to Seabiscuit. 24/7/365 loving care and totally best friends. Both men knew what their equine buddies were all about 100%. Both horses tended to be moody and not friendly with everybody other than their special caregivers.
Secretariat was lucky to have Eddie.... i wish Eddie stayed with him at Claiborne when he retired ( the horse )
I am sitting here at Claiborne Farm right now !!! Waiting for my tour
Eddie would of checked Secretariat's hooves and maybe could of saved him from all the hurt . Who knows? RIP Eddie and Secretariat.
Eddie Sweat spent more time with Secretariat than any human ever did. Penny Chenery trusted Eddie 100% 24/7/365.
Nope that title would go to Bobby Anderson at Claiborne
@@SteveKnightVO Eddie Sweat was with Secretariat since birth constantly. Thus, you're wrong. Bobby Anderson was not Secretariat's near constant companion like Eddie Sweat was.
Nope Eddie didn’t come into secretariats life until he was @ 2, because he worked for Lucien Laurin and not Meadow stable. Eddie was with him until late in his 3yo year when he left for Claiborne. I’m sure he was a great groom & good person, but he was only with Secretariat for a short time in his 19 years
@@SteveKnightVO Wrong. Eddie was there when Secretariat was born in 1970. Eddie was also the groom for Riva Ridge and two other champion horses. Eddie was hired by Chenery's Meadow Farm in 1958. Do some research before spewing out false information, DA.
@@SteveKnightVO Eddie was never at Claiborne Farm.
The groom is like the horse’s parent and the trainer is the school teacher. Any superb jockey can successfully ride a well-trained, healthy, motivated horse - but still, let’s not forget Turcotte, who had the courage to let Big Red stretch out and run for that Triple Crown in his own way, without interference. Horse watched the movements of the competition from behind, and then made his move. The acceleration and stamina in the Belmont Stakes gives me chills every time!
I heard an interview with Turcotte. In the Belmont he basically did nothing but ride. I believe his quote was "Big Red was out to destroy the field that day".
@@michaelmiller5877 oh I love your comment!! Gave me chills. I watch all of the Triple for that year, but watch Belmont every time I want a lift. After all of this time, I still remember it like it happened recently
I still get chills, watching that race!!. 😂😮❤😊 2023
@@risingphoenix8072 same here. I was years old at the time and still remember like it was yesterday.
Both you and Secretariat got very lucky....you are both winners
Thank you for your service Eddie. You were very special.
I can’t think of Secretariat without thinking of Eddie….and Charley, Penny, Ronnie, Lucien and Jim Gaffney…people forget Jim too. He was very important in the beginning, helping to break Secretariat of some bad habits. He was let go abruptly when he was no longer needed. It’s all in Bill Nack’s book, the Making of a Champion……which every Secretariat fan should read.
Lauren Urban, Lucien was afraid of Secretariat. Ronnie Turcotte always let Secretariat do his own thing 100%. No whip ever needed. At the Belmont, Ronnie has often said, all he did was hold on and ride. Secretariat did everything else.
Thank you for pointing him out and giving tribute to the man that spent the most time with the greatest horse in the world
Thank you for giving such care to Secretariat. I know you loved him and that he felt that love and he worked for people that loved him, and who he loved. Both Riva Ridge and Secretariat were very lucky to have you as their groom and friend. I always wished that you had stayed with them both.
I had the privilege of working with "Shorty", as Eddie Sweat was called, and he was true perfection. If ever there was a "horse whisperer" that was Shorty. With a soft-spoken, kind demeanor, Shorty was always cool, calm and collected. A true horseman whom I'll always think of fondly.💖 RIP Shorty
Thank You for the memory of Shorty and Red! I just knew that he had a lot to do with Reds success! 🐎🙋🏾💞
You are so LUCKY thank you for sharing ☺️
What a great memory you have shared. I always weep when I see that photo of Eddie from the back when he was done dropping Secretariat and Riva off at Claiborne farm and was obviously crying. I so wished he had taken the offer from Seth Hancock and stayed with those horses in their new home. Thank you.
@@oshea2217 Me too. I am crying 😭
Secretariat was lucky to have a groom, like Eddie, who took such good care of him
Lucien Lauren's most trusted groom. As much as Secretariat's success was owing to his innate talent, it was also because he had the devoted care and attention of Eddie Sweat.
Thank you, Eddie Sweat, for what you did for Secretariat.
Perhaps the unsung hero of it all. Much like Harbut with Man O War. RIP Eddie
