    I thought the 5D series was weather sealed. Was the damage due to the fall with the card door open which let the water in. tough break. could you film within the car with a tripod or use video or time lapse? Would insurance pay for a replacement? Maybe having a Mark II to use (B camera) would have been a better choice.

    Justin........ Below is who you should consider for your cleaning and or repair. This location is actual Canon Factory... and they do it 'right' and you will have your camera back in 3 to 5 days... I am a platinum member with CPS, and when I send my in, the camera is worked on the very same day they received it at their location in Virginia... see the below website... ... www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/support/canon-professional-services

      Thanks for the advice! I took it to a certified Canon repair shop here in the Tampa bay area. They are going to give me a diagnosis. Gut told me thought that it may not be worth fixing because it took a fall and the internal parts got wet. It was still firing shots on the ground because of the lightning trigger but it could be the shutter block and the chips. Either way it was getting broken down today and they were going to figure out why no power was showing. Fingers crossed its repairable but my hopes aren't too high at this point. Good news though is he took a look at the lens before I left the shop and doesn't think it needs any repair or to even be serviced yet. Thanks for watching and again for the tips! 👏🙌

    • @BigBoltMedia

      Correct. I have had lots of people say I should have gotten out to grab it but those few seconds of grabbing an aluminum tripod standing in a puddle with bolts literally hitting the field in front of us just didn't seem worth the risk. We take enough risks driving and being near these storms as it is. Lesson learn though Rain cove always goes on camera if there is any chance the rain could slam us. - Justin Labadie

    Wonder if you had pulled the battery right away and not tried to use it until it had a chance to dry if it would have lived. There is a repair guy in St Pete (The Camera Cure) who may be able to fix it cheaper than the factory.

    • @BigBoltMedia
      @BigBoltMedia 5 років тому

      Correct! Man I made so many newb mistakes. Although in the video it's unclear I didn't continue to use it. I was using my backup little camera the M50. I was getting a multitude of errors but I think if it ever happens in the future I will so I removed everything (Card and Battery). The problem I think lies in the fact that the lightning trigger was still firing the shutter while it was down as water was going into SD card slot allowing for it to drain into the rest of the camera.

      Thanks dave. I (Justin) could have had them wider. I even had a sandbag on them unfortunately no match to the wind severe thunderstorm wind gust that came barreling through. The even worst part is days before I had put together a rain cover for the camera but in the heat of the moment forget to throw it on. The camera is showing no signs of life. All the mistakes I made were completely preventable and I know it. Definitely going to be wayyy more cautious in the future. Thanks for watching glad you enjoyed it! 🙌

    I live about 2 hours south of you guys, and love the opportunity to shoot lightning. I'm leaning towards this purchase, just based on this video and the results. So... when using it, are you using the camera exposure setting (say 1/60 at f11 for example), and the trigger will fire fast enough to catch most of the bolt? It's just that simple?

      Yeah, shooting lighting in a field behind my house, lightning went from striking miles away to less than 200 yards instantly. What was crazy is that about 10s later another super brief strike hit the exact same spot. After being shaken up by that I was overjoyed to see that the camera caught both strikes.

      Chasing the Tucson area for ~15 years, I've survived three near misses. The first one was at home, and I wasn't even chasing! I was just talking to the neighbor in the front yard. There was occasional distant rumbling off to the south, but nothing more. Suddenly, a genuine bolt-from-the-blue blasted overhead and landed maybe a few hundred yards away. The parent storm must have been at least 5~6 miles away. #2 happened as I was packing up and bugging out in advance of an approaching cell. I was leaning over, putting one tripod and camera in the car, when FLASH..BOOM! I didn't see where it hit, but the ~1 second delay and explosive noise meant it was close. When I got home, I was thrilled to see the other camera had caught it! It was indeed about 1/5 mile away, waaaay too close for my liking. But it did make a nice photo! ;) #3 was the closest. Foolishly chasing in a boiling mess near Tombstone, with multiple cells popping up all around, I should have packed up or re-positioned. But the road network sucked, and there was a rare bit of good light on a pretty desert scene. So I stayed and nervously pressed my luck. POW!!!!!!! The thing must have landed within a few hundred feet behind me. The flash was dazzling and the explosion of hot plasma was overwhelming and immediate. I know better than to get into that sort of situation, but after a frustrating chase, people can do stupid things. :(

    A few days ago I bought a cheap Vivitar lightning trigger. Did some experimenting with it during a thunderstorm. The trigger would set the camera off during a lightning strike. But the camera would miss capturing the image. The street lights would show up in the picture. But the camera seemed to be too slow. Could it be that the lightning strikes were just too fast? Should be getting the Strike Finder 2 any day now.
