Massey Ferguson 1650 Restoration Part 4
Hey man, what ever happened with the Massey?
Ever consider selling this?
Nope wouldn't part with it. Took a lot to get it here, had to import it from the US, wasn't cheap and they are hard tractors to find to begin with.
@@macsworkshop9366 Understandable. I’ve been on the hunt for quite awhile myself. They’re cool little machines 👍🏼
Your plow has a depth wheel. Consider using it.
It was setup to work as I wanted it to. No changes needed other than a little stronger tractor.
😎👍
You have to put some front weights on that tdoctor when you have the plow on the back and you should always use low range when plowing
Doesn't need weight on the front and that is low range
@@macsworkshop9366 I thought it was doing fairly well with no weight at all. But 200 lbs. of wheel weight and 50 lbs. on the front help considerably. Especially on the left rear. My Ingersoll does really well with a 12 inch plow and combine weights on the back with turf tires. I think low range is a tad fast for a 12 inch plow on the Case/Ingersoll tractors. But don't know a solution. I think I could hear your bypass squealing intermittently. Mine does the same. It is fun under the right conditions. Rocks will stop anything.
Yeah fairly hard ground it did well I figured. The engines a bit tired in the old 444 so I try to avoid working it too hard these days. I have a 7020 Ingersoll that pulls the 12" plough a lot easier.
I wonder if you could poke a strand of copper wire in that hole while screwing the jet in to tell when that hole lines up.
Have you made much press since you uploaded last?
I've done nothing with it unfortunately. I painted the hood and rear fender last summer, not sure if I ever posted about that or not. Really need to get my shit together and finish it.
@@macsworkshop9366 Understandable, I am doing that with my John Deere 70. Haven’t worked on it in close to a month. But I also have other projects. I just bought a yanmar engine to put in a garden tractor which should be fun but. Too much to do, and too little time to do it.
Yes it doesn't take too much to start spreading yourself pretty thin. Only so much time and money to do everything.
That's what I thought I needed to do thanks for confirming it
👍
Why is he only plowing one way he should have made a right and went back beside where he have plowed.
I don't want a dead furrow
It leaves a "ditch" or "dead furrow" in the middle of the garden.
Nice! I did not know they made these in 1966. But I am glad it is still alive and working. Looking at the farm in the background, I assume this is just a hobby. Looks like you might have a bigger Massey up there.
Yes just a hobby. Mac Farms is my main channel we have a few Masseys on the farm.
Would you ever sell that book?
Traded it and a bunch of other MF stuff off a couple years ago to a guy that ended up screwing me over on a bunch of cub cadet parts. So it's out there somewhere but I no longer have it.
@Mac's Workshop ok. I'm sorry to hear that happened to you
Does anyone know what transmission fluid this takes?
Pretty neat. Looks like some soft dirt. Worst thing about those tractors are those archaic, obnoxious single cyl engines.
Was pretty hard going but it's not like the ground hadn't been worked before. The Kolher isn't bad, suits the tractor I guess. Nice v twin efi Honda would be a nice engine in one but worth more than the tractor.
Ooooh! Don't say that. I would gladly put a twin on that if it were mine.@@macsworkshop9366
I got to take the snap ring out of it for first thing
Yours lifts very easy, mine is hard to lift and my springs are up all the way. What's your setup?
Just the factory setup. All the springs are new though, I bought the last ones AGCO had and replaced my old ones a few years back. I guess that helps.
@@macsworkshop9366 you should post more videos of her. My springs are stretched out, but can ream out the holes for the brackets and raise it.
Why rev the thing up so much when you are just going back to start plowing another row...you are not supposed to rev a machine when its not doing a tasking job
Won’t hurt it, not sure who told you you can’t rev an engine unless it’s under significant load, makes zero sense.
Agreed! Gets more oil anyway.@@macsworkshop9366
Do you know where I could get a dash? Working on a 1655 project with a 20hp linamar, just got it running but doesn’t drive. I was told that the acceleration pedal was seized up and somebody kicked it real hard and broke it. The pedal moves all the way up to the trans but doesn’t drive. Is it hard to rebuild one of those transmission pumps?
What tires are on the rear?
Noticed your 1650 got an Eaton transmission, I can’t find any information of them coming from factory with anything other than sundstrand. Was this swapped from a snapper 1650 at some point or was there some that came factory with Eaton?
1450/1650 used Eaton hydro’s, the 1655/1855 used Sunstrand, the earlier 14/16 used Sunstrand also.
ok makes sense , I got two 1650s. The earlier 1650 from the first year of production got sundstrand. The other 1650 was one of the last made and got Eaton. Do you know much of difference between them, I was told the sundstrand got more pull to it? But owning both I have not seen a big difference. My 1650 with thr Eaton I’m using to blow snow this winter with the 4220 blower. My 1650 with the sundstrand is down right now, rebuilding the motor.
I’ve heard the same but I’ve never really seen any difference in the ones I’ve ran either. Both seem to work equally well
@@macsworkshop9366 thanks for the info, really hard to find details on the old machines with changes like that throughout production . Hope the 1650 project is going well, will be nice to see when completed.
Yeah it’s been kind of on the back burner now for a couple years I’ve been busy with other stuff, really need to get back on it and finish it up.
To make this better edit the video so it’s not as long
Thanks for the tip I see you’re doing so well on UA-cam yourself.....
I kept asking people if I could do that because I put wider tires on. Everyone kept saying to cut the wheel and widen it. Now I know what I'm going to do. Thank you.
Nice video, but you really only upgraded the bearings. You still have a 3/4" spindle that could bend.
Correct
She was having her troubles there Scott. First two furrows worked good. Ground harder after that. ? Rocks there too. Maybe. Hehe. Good time to change the oil after that work out. Does look great.
Thanks Noel, I guess the ground got harder I don't really remember LOL that 12" plow is a real workout for the 444 though. I used it on the 7020 this year, that has no trouble with it.
Why not simply fabricate a new one from that beefy trailer spindle rather than machining and boring out the trailer spindle to mate with the old stock spindle. I think he could have made a 10x stronger spindle with his welder and scrap steel and that trailer hub.
3 reasons, 1) read the title, "quick and dirty" this was never meant to be an all out fabrication of a new spindle. Just a slight upgrade over OEM. 2) I think I mentioned it in the video, if not, this tractor was never intended to be a loader tractor, so it doesn't NEED super HD spindles. 3) The whole purpose of the project was to create a slight upgrade over stock, and allow me to use the 4 bolt rims and tires that I had and wanted to use, that's it.
@@macsworkshop9366 you are clearly a skilled guy. Im not criticizing, Im here because I learn from the talented guys like you.
Add some weight to the front will help you a lot!
Love the 7020
She’s a fine machine Murphy !
G'day Mac
Gday murphy!
I really like your project. How did you find the tractor ??? Looks heavy duty for sure. VF
A family member had it sitting in their yard, I seen it back in 2011 but they weren’t ready to sell, ended up buying it a few years later.
My tiller goes a lot deeper than yours Scott. The rear flap on mine is normally flat on the ground. I may have my lift point set up different than yours. Maybe that’s why I get stuck. Can’t make two passes. Stuck. And always dragging dirt out on to the grass about two feet, when coming out of the garden, With the tiller up.
Yeah it’s hard to get it set up right, mine might be wrong too I just set it up to lift as high as possible. I think the owners manual shows where it’s supposed to be.
You can replace it with a kohler carb for a k181 for less than $20.
and I've done that many times.
How about a link to a source for the k181 carb, please.
Can this be done to a HH140 ohv?
What price
I’d take 450,000 US dollars
@@macsworkshop9366 I’ll give you $450,001 😂

@@macsworkshop9366 looking at a Massey Ferguson 12 hydro tractor. Think it’s worth it?
Where did you get the shaft and bushing kit? I just ordered a new shaft and bushings from carb rescue.
Yep that’s where I got them too.
Safety switches and solenoids can be a challenge find which is causing the problem.
Yeah Rusty it’s a pain to chase multiple problems at once too. Thanks for watching.
Funny enough I fixing a garden tractor for friend that had that problem but it was a Briggs & Stratton VTwin 20hp Intek which had the fuel shutoff solenoid stuck, and what a BA$T🤬RD !!!!😡 to take off, you literally had to take off the engine air cowling and air manifold with the carburetor on as a unit to take the carburetor off to undo the fuel bowel !! Plus those stupid Torx bolts holding it on !!!😡 but thanks to UA-cam I found a channel that showed how it's done, so cleaned it up tested it assemble it ( I wasn't going to put new gaskets because the tractor was basically junk and would only last a year) and it run !👍the only problem now is the electrical problem which prevents the tractor to move as it cuts out.🙁 I would put your restoration of your 1394 on this channel, it would make a interesting how to and show how to repair a 1394. 🙂👍
Haha at least the 7020 it’s not hard to pull the carb off, I was able to just loosen the bolts and leave the linkages and everything on it, gave me enough room to remove the solenoid.
Jumpins, I hate chasin troubles like that. I had trouble with my JD 140 last winter. Took months to get it running reasonable. Still don’t really know what was wrong and I’m not totally convinced it’s fixed, but it runs. Any update on the JD 650.
I think dad painted the chassis on it, he’s working on the wiring now. She’s still in pieces anyway lol
The frustrating problems caused by government over reach to protect the stupid operators!
Yeah that’s about the size of it. Few backfires never hurt anyone lol
Are thoes the Firestone regency tires
They are Goodyear Power Torque tires
What carb number is that ?
Awesome work Mac! I started a similar project, the rear cylinder on my 1855 needs to be replaced too
Thanks man! I’m still trying to figure out the seals for the rear cylinder, nothing is available for it anymore.
I just picked one up for $150 complete it's my birthday present to myself
That’s awesome bud. Happy birthday!
Hydrostatic?
No these were a hydraulic drive, little different setup than the hydrostatics.
That looks awesome!!! Probably an awesome work horse!
Thanks, it's a handy little machine.
Structurally you'll be fine, like you said, it's only the aesthetics. That is going to be a good looking little machine.
Thanks Wayne
That is a great idea. If anyone ever installed a wheel on those tractors they would agree.
Thanks Rusty, it’s tough to mount them with the bolts especially with ballasted tires.
Nice Mac, like that project big time
Thanks Jan, glad your enjoying it!
In another video you referenced about the rear hydro couplers interfering with the 3 point, just a suggestion, I plan on going 2 on either side or stacking them two on top of two, wonder if that'll help in your case as well?
Stacking might work I have to see if there is any interference with the fender though. No room on the opposite side of those because the 3pt cylinder is in the way
Good to see you back at it Scott! Hopefully I'll do something with the 1655 soon lol.
lol thanks Jason.
Great video man 🙂👍interesting project you have, shame about the engine, are you going to fit it with a Honda or take the two engines and make a good one? No shortage of hydraulic couplers you've got there!! Lol 😆
I think I’ve found another block for it that will work so probably going to go with that, then use the good components from this engine. I’ll still need a new rod, piston, valves and a few other parts. If a used Honda GX comes up for sale I still might go that route though.
I take it you haven't redone your Mac's Workshop photo. I haven't either, lost my friend last October. Now back to a recommendation, will the top link work if you split the hydraulic outlets, 2 on the right and 2 on the left? You could add a bracket under the seat brace and move the outlets further right but then that gets into the tire area and the mud you tend to play in. Keep cleaning and organizing, it will never be perfect but will be more convenient.
No haven’t updated it. Can’t get Albert to pose for a photo lol Thought about that but the lift cylinder for the 3pt comes through that side so it will interfere there too. I have to get the fender on and see what I can do with them.
Nice job on rearranging and cleaning the shop. I need to do that too. Looking forward to seeing the engine going together
Thanks Rusty, have to see what I can come up with for another block first.
