4 Inch Meander Book - Espresso Press Design #artjournal #collagebook
Meander books are a creative and unique book form that can be used as a mini art journal, a journal or a collage book. The pages flip and turn in an interactive manner and each side offers a new perspective. I've combined this meander book with some new watercolor stenciling and background techniques. Later I'll add either collage or more stamping or stenciling to complete my pages.
What you'll need:
1 12x12" sheet of scrapbook paper or card stock (if you prefer a double sided design that's fine).
2 - 4 1/8" cover pages (I glued scrapbook paper scraps to packaging material)
Watercolors
Ink blending tools (brushes or ink blending pads)
Stencils
Scoreboard
Scissors
Brayer
Since I am using plain card stock for this book I am combining some newly found techniques using watercolors, ink blending tools, stencils and a brayer just to have some pattern on the background. I'll add more to this book later.
Begin by scoring your 12x12" paper at 4" and 8". Make a quarter turn and score again at 4" and 8". On one side of your paper cut along the scoreline at the 4" mark up until the first square. Turn you paper 180º and do the same on the opposite side following the tutorial. Arrange your sheet so your beginning fold will be folding up and then fold each square accordion style and work your way around the sheet until you reach the last square. Burnish well. Glue your cover sheets to the front and back page. You may want to place your book under a weight for a day or two. Leave as is or make a closure of your choice.
Tips:
Meander books are a popular book form. Watch all inspiration videos and look for more meander book tutorials so you can learn a variety of ways to construct them as well as how to make them in different sizes.

DISCLAIMER: It has come to my attention that visitors are thinking these images are of my own physical creations, THEY ARE NOT. They are AI generated. Sometimes they come up randomly when I write a prompt. Many are good enough that I wanted to try to find a practical use for them. Actual creator images present too many hurdles for a simple blog post or publication. These are eye candy which if interest blossoms; I would perhaps like to create and publish an inspirational magazine along the lines of Somerset Studio. In my area we have many independently published artist magazines. I have used them myself as an inspirational learning tool and they have elevated my personal creations.
Can you use white paint if you don’t have justo
Yes.
I made my own alcohol ink with magic markers. Can you use that as well as what you’re using in water paint just asking so I’ll know thank you
Yes.
Mary. These are absolutely stunning. Wow wow wow. I just found you on UA-cam and am learning so much from your videos. Are you hand-cutting these messy edges or is there a tool that would help with that? (Like a deckle -edged ruler or some kind of punch?) (I have a little arthritis in my hands.) Any Sizzix die cuts you're using? Or others that look like natural edges? Any advice appreciated. I haven't bought a machine yet, but this made me want to.
Thank you. I should explain that I created these images with AI so I could expand my blog categories so that I could write about good design/layout, color etc. They are for teaching and inspiration. I wouldn't feel right pilfering other's creations/photos off the internet. In time I want to turn them into a magazine of sorts. That being said, I have used them as a learning tool myself and in my fall journal and a Christmas card book I used different decorator scissors to create edge variety so you can see in the fall journal I have taken a lot of inspiration from them already. This one in particular is free, link included so feel free to download it and enjoy some eye candy.
I'll happily adopt your Geli plate and give it a good home. 😃 I LOVE mine and want more. I completely agree about the rest. New sub, thumb's up!
Thanks for watching and subscribing, I appreciate it so much. I hope I'll find more time to experiment with the gelli plate, acrylics aren't the only thing I can use.
@maryferrari-espressopressd7921 I've been too chicken to try alcohol inks, but I really want to! Seems like it would stain the plate, which is one reason I'd like another, in case I ruin the first one. But also so I can keep working on one as the other is drying. I am terribly impatient. I also want to try oil pastels but I have very little experience with those on any surface. I tried chalk. Totally nope. Tried charcoal. It works but it's so messy and gave very disappointing results (imo) so I won't likely try that again either. Happy new year! May you find more quiet moments for your art than you expect. 🙂
@@adoxartist1258 I did see someone experimenting with watercolor and stencils on a gelli plate, they were beautiful. Since inktense by Derwent is also something I want to try maybe I'll try them. That was one thing I should've put on my list, alcohol inks. There is something about them and humidity or temperature and the bottles opening. They leaked out of the bottles and made a huge mess. The colors are gorgeous but they dry too fast. I don't think that issue occurs with Derwent inktense. Thank you, happily winter is the crafting season!
Great message, Mary. As a new crafter, I appreciate this message.
Thank you.
I buy my craft supplies at thrift stores, rummage sales, or yard sales. Some items were free. Anything I haven't used in a year gets donated to a seniors' program or a kids' program in my area. I'm 75, I volunteer at places that give me old magazines and torn books. Tina, Al's wife
Thank you for sharing.
I totally agree. I’ve bought so much craft stuff I don’t need and don’t use. I’ve learned my lesson I don’t buy anymore paper or ribbon, embossing powders, etc. I don’t make cards anymore I started to sell off all my stuff I don’t use anymore. It takes up to much space as well. Since I started junk journaling all you need is paper around your house, coffee and a couple of good books or magazines, and maybe one good paper pack. I can’t create my mind gets cluttered the more I have it clutters my mind and interferes with my creativity. Great video thank you good advice for starters 👍🏼😊
Thank you. I agree, it's easier to be creative with less.
Hi. First time viewer. I love honest reviews from the users point of view. I have made great purchases based on other's opinions or reviews. I really find it helpful. Thanks for sharing your vuews. TFS ❤
Thank you for watching I'm glad you found it helpful.
What self sharpening guotine(s) are you using?
Here is the link to the large guillotine. www.amazon.com/dp/B0006HVQH8?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title It took me a long time to decide, there are quite a few self sharpening models out there. And the smaller one is from Bira Craft. I don't think I purchased the smaller one online.
You sound so very depressed. Have you reached out for help? Praying for you. Try to remember, this is a hobby-just like any other hobby. Buying something regrettable, then keeping it even though you don’t like it or don’t use it, it is not good nor healthy for you. Let it GO! Think of it like this: if you had instead paid $ to play golf, you’d have “nothing” to show for it. Many others spend a lot more $ on unhealthy harmful vices like alcohol, drugs & sex than we ever do on crafts-even including all the duds we buy. The guilt & regret must GO!
@@ajbunches825 My usual demeanor is measured and too often it gets lost in translation. I do normally keep a box to give away the absolute duds to Goodwill. Maybe regret was too strong of a word and I tried to convey it was more about making better choices. Thanks for watching and thank you for the prayers.
Happy New Year🥳. How are you doing? I feel this way about all of the spools of ribbons that I have purchased. Not only have I collected ‘stuff’ to create junk journals at home but I have also collected ‘stuff’ to keep at the homes of two family members for when I visit with them. I told myself that it made sense to do that so that I would not have to pack things to bring with me every time I visit with them. I do buy a lot of my supplies from my local thrift stores but I still have more than I need. I started out making true junk journals and I like that style. I am challenging myself to find a way to use what I have and limit my buying until mid year 2025. I am calling it my ‘low buy’ challenge. I would have tried to do a ‘no buy’ but I cannot seem to stay away from the thrift store but I am going to eventually get there because it is only so much that I can use. I am in the process of putting together a bundle package for a friend who is interested in junk journaling but have no supplies to work with. I have more than enough to gift to her. This way she can play around and learn what she likes and dislikes without spending any money🙂💜.
Thank you, Happy New Year. I am coming along. Yes, it sure adds up doesn't it. That's a great idea to gift some of your supplies. I could start and supply an entire craft group. Best wishes to both of us in this endeavor.
Take my word for it - go see a hand specialist about that finger issue. Been there and the longer you wait the worse it gets. My dominant hand is now pretty much useless because I waited and it took too long to diagnose the problem. Don't mean to scare you but I also don't want you to end up where I am now.
Thank you for the advice.
Beautiful. Did you put the gold paint on the image or facing up?
Thank you. Facing up, if it was facing down the metallic gold acrylic wouldn't reflect as much.
@@maryferrari-espressopressd7921 Thank you
Thank you for sharing your spool process. I’m very sorry your brother is so ill. I have a brother and can’t imagine 😢. Praying for your brother, you, and your family ❤ Merry Christmas
Thank you so much, that's so kind of you. It means a lot. Merry Christmas to you too!
New technique for me. I like it. Using a metallic marker for the edge is inspired. Please confirm: waxy side facing substrate with the glue, or on the outside. Is ironing an option without the sissix? Thank you. Blessings now.
Thank you. Wax paper side doesn't matter. You can use a rolling pin if you don't have a Sizzix as shown in this video. Or just use a soft object like a cork and burnish. ua-cam.com/video/PrPoywV96rc/v-deo.htmlsi=Id-IM4AbWor53VS_
@maryferrari-espressopressd7921 Thank you. Blessings now.
@@conniewhall3109 My pleasure, thank you.
Mary, your angels turned out so pretty. I like the idea of putting the angels on book gifts for bookmarks. The old pictures were wonderful.
Thank you so much! Happy Bird's Glitter Nest was a lifesaver, I didn't know how I was going to come up with an idea for a new bookmark this year.
This is gorgeous Mary! So much inspiration here. Love, love, love it!❤😊Patti and Debbie
Thank you.
I can’t wait to try it out
I still have some of them and they are still well adhered. Watch the newer video, (laminate with glue stick) you can probably get away with using glue stick if you desire.
Nice
Thank you, I appreciate you taking the time to watch.
How fun are these 😊. Thank you for lol your sharing
Thank you for watching, glad you think they are fun.
What type of wax paper microwavable makes my craft cloudy?
Don't use Dollar Tree wax paper. It's milky. I didn't discover that until I tried it. I used Cut-Rite.
Beautiful bead project. Good project for next Holiday Season when it is very hot here in the Valley of the Son. Thanks for sharing. ❤🙏❤️

What gorgeous paper and I love your creativity! I have never seen this type of project before. Thank you for sharing❤

Thank you Mary! You got to play with your papers, and I got to learn! It was VERY inspirational 💖💕
Thank you so much for watching, the wheels are turning, I'll show my makes next time and this time I took notes.
OH and love these ... going to make some today!!! I thought I would use them on my cmas wrapping ... have the buttons in the middle and use twine to wrap the package with the buttons in the middle!!
Sounds boho rustic, love it, thanks for watching.
In between gluing if you lay your bottle down instead of stand it upright it makes it much faster and easier to get your glue out next time. :)
I probably should because it just falls over anyway. Thanks for the tip.
Mary, I don’t like to use black ink either. If I am going to stamp an image that I will be coloring in later, I prefer to use a dark grey archival Ink. One of my favorites is Watering Can by Wendy Vecchi (Ranger)
Black is ok for some things but it's very overpowering. Thanks for the product mention. I really have to get some more colors and inks in my supply, I mostly chose neutrals.
I love this idea - will try it today. TFS.
Thank you for watching, I appreciate it.

Glad you like them, thanks for watching.
Thank you I love these
Thank you for watching! I have two newer versions, much easier to do as far as the application of glue goes. One has added gold/metallic antiquing.
Beautiful Autumn papers.
Thank you and you reminded me, I forgot to add the newest one, baskets of apples, leaves and berries.
A Sizzix what?
A Sizzix embossing/die cutting machine.
They start at the corner in order to stretch the paper fibers and break them so that they’re not tearing
Thanks
Definitely ‘stealing’ this one Mary, if I have the right paper. TY!
Glad you like them. A masterboard would be cool. As I was making them I began thinking they would be so cute for kids for Christmas or a backpack tag so I have to make a note of that.

thank you
