    Paused the video to leave this comment. Might be unpopular but I wouldn’t play with a DM that thought they could tell me how my character looks. I would never tell a player how their character can look. I’ve had many conversations about types of characters or meshing of back stories. But I’ve never never said no to a look.

    Party conflict done right is great! My favorite character ever was a duergar conquest paladin (Out of the Abyss) that saw the rest of the party members as tools and travelling with the "soft upworlders" as a means to his own ends. So on the one hand, he was a total dick BUT the party also knew that they could rely on him to further the partys survival and well being. Conversly, another player in the same game was a "hippy dippy type druid" whos shtick was ignorant friendliness but they played her in a way that was constantly detrimental to the party (still unsure if it was intentional or not) so nobody was a fan of the character and after several discussions about their behavior, that sentiment bled over to the player. I guess (realized this while writing) party conflict at a character level can be awesome but if it becomes party conflict at a player level, that's when it can get ugly.

    As a DM, I wouldn't care that someone brought a fat character to the table. That being said, when you bring a character at my table with a distinguishing feature, it needs to have a backstory. But that's true of all characters at my table, I want them fleshed out. Pun intended. Did I write this whole comment so I could do this pun ? I ain't telling.

    • @IdCritThat
      @IdCritThat 3 дні тому

      hmmm idk if being fat needs to be a plot point though, people can just be fat. it doesn't have to be like, their defining trait. Generally, I agree, but I don't think plus sized bodies are necessary aspects of backstory.

    • @12oranges
      @12oranges 2 дні тому

      @@IdCritThat Everything is a starting point for roleplaying at my table. Why or how a character got fat (if and only if it's a distinguishing feature, aka it's outside the bounds of it's cultural expectations) would be explored at character creation. It could be something as simple as the character has very very slow metabolism, which would be a character trait that would setup roleplay expectations. Or maybe it's something cliché like the character was bullied and now eats his emotions. Maybe it's a picky elf eater that just doesn't like the regular elf diet and was drawn to foods outside of it's evolutionary pathway, aka foods that over optimize it's metabolism. Maybe the same elf isn't a picky eater but was adopted into a different culture where the regular elf diet wasn't available. It doesn't need to be super complicated. But here, I'm talking about making it a distinguishing feature of a character. I agree that a character can be just fat. History is full of examples actually. So historical arguments about fat people not fitting the theme is a bad argument. Plenty of fat nobles with gout issues in history books. The round strongman is also a historical trope. In fact, the common conception of fitness is very modern. But the Greeks, one might say ! When someone has an "ideal" this means a "less than ideal" exists in society. Most historically "fit" people where poor and didn't have access to nutrition. There were in fact fat Greeks and Romans. What I find funny about the "historical arguments" is that fantasy throws a wrench in the balance of power, yet the default fantasy setting is still a classic feudal system. Patriarchal systems in fantasy when magic is the ultimate equalizer ? That's odd, so women are not born with any magical talents ? If anything the power structures of a fantasy world should be based around magic. A magiocracy wouldn't see sex or race, only magical abilities. The muscular and fit man that wields a greataxe would be the bottom of the barrel in that society. The fat nerdy girl with a spellbook would be it's master. And in a society where spellcasters can just summon their food, you'd actually expect them to be a little round. So being fat would actually be a marker of wealth and power ... just like nobility used to be. A real fantasy world would look just like the "wizard vs fighter balance" debate, as they gain levels. Which class becomes the most powerful ? A realistic fantasy world would reflect that.

    speak with animals is useless against a griffon that qualifies as a monstrosity and not a beast/animal. So I get how it can appear broken if that is what he let you do. But still a very effective way to deal with certain creatures, just persuade them to go away.

      @@IdCritThat here is a idea for a campaign to give incentive for players to not just murderhobo everything: Start them at decent level, lets say 5-10, and then give them positive exp for doing quests, and negative exp for killing things. If the quest is to specificly kill a thing, then thats a quest and gives exp. But whenever its the players choise to go lethal, their curse makes them weaker. And they know this. Suddenly players will act in Completely different ways than usual. Cultists will be arrested and given to the guards for trials, the dragon will be convinced to play nice instead of just looted and cooked, there is a point to sneak and spy, not just Shoot and loot everything. And then, when the players are used to this, you introduce the villain, whos minions GIVE exp... And the Villain knows this. So after the players have returned to their murderhobo ways and cleared a few hideouts, the villain actually have a point when he says they are not that different.

      @@IdCritThat speaking of fun pacifist character. I maintanked and mainhealed Curse of Strahd as a evil sorcerer pretending to be a good cleric, only in cloth (ac 12 or 13). Oh he died, eventually. But by player hand and given choise. The group was starting to fracture due to distrust (well i had murdered a priest and started a cult. Handy axe, that... pokes you if you are not Good aligned...). So i offered the group my neck as a unifying act to complete the quest together and they took it, and did it. Also a handy way to infiltrate the castle as a ghost if you happen to be a evil sourcerer accidentaly sworn to a divine golden dragon. He was the priest holding Strahds wedding, and managed to to shift the groom to a player to give the Ceremony spell before the showdown. You guys make it hard to contribute because you're so good at covering the bases! Fully agree with Vic about the insight hot take. Insight will tell the roller if they can tell whether or not the opposing party is lying or not but not why they are lying. Depending on the roll or context it may not even tell them what the other is lying about or how they are lying. Flat out deception? Omission? Who knows. Since none of that is divulged and it's boring to just get a yes or no, I have the "liar" describe what they did or are doing to tip off the other person, if anything. As far as the free roll thing goes, if it's something you're character would reasonably know, I don't even call for a roll but I'll ask what skill you're using to determine the info the character knows/recalls. If you're stopping to study something, you most certainly are spending at least 6 seconds (using that action) to glean whatever info you can about said thing.

    Rules as Written, the damage you take on as part of Warding Bond cannot be halved in any way. That being said, with how much HP a Barbarian has, that doesn't actually matter, because a) Barbarian = d12 hit die and b) whoever was attacking your Peace Cleric now has a Barbarian substantially closer to them, and they're even more pissed.

  • @HannahWhittingham-ty6wu
    @HannahWhittingham-ty6wu 25 днів тому

    I definitely agree with your guys' point about modules being very railroady. They run as if the players are all heroic, and will likely do one of 2 things. Nevermind that the characters are much more varied, chaotic, and want to push boundaries as much as they can to see what they can get away with. But with that said, as a new DM (and a new dnd player on top of it), following a module is a lifesaver. I'm currently running the Dragon of Icespire Peak, and it gives a great framework/foundation for how a campaign should run. I've been having a lot of fun creating a stronger hook for the story, and creating a few new characters or dissecting some of the dungeons. It's just nice being able to put as much or as little work into the campaign as I like.

    I just wanted to add one more theory to the AITAH conversation... the GM might not have had much if any experience with essentially firing a player. If that was the case, they might have leaned on having the rest of the group there as back up to be able to do it, consciously or unconsciously.

      @@IdCritThat Wasn't justifying that, though again there might have been some caving to the guilt or whatever, and the GM didn't didn't want to carry the full responsibility. Not saying it was the right call, just an understandable, educational, misstep for a young or inexperienced GM. Also, lets be fair, the players that spoke up should carry their own responsibility for whatever they choose to say. I can't imagine they were being held at sword point and forced against their will to say what they did. It was a group error. Honestly though, GM's have so much responsibility to their groups as is, just preparing for the games and managing play. Should dealing with problem players automatically fall on their shoulders as well? Maybe the group could have talked it out and chosen one person who was more comfortable and willing to be the messenger if it was that hard for the GM. Just some random thoughts since I love a good devils advocate argument.

    I hard disagree on the min-maxing versus not discussion. Both styles of play are valid and both offer different ways to interact with a campaign. A min maxed character might be an uptight perfectionist who over time learns that its okay to lean on others for help and not place all the responsibility on themselves. A non munchkin character works just as well for those who like to improv when they fail and somehow still have an impact. It doesnt have to be either or.

    Rule of Cool Story: I was running a Spelljammer campaign, and the party was on a rescue mission for a downed ship in the jungles of Chult. The party makes it to the scene of the crash, and the surviving crew is starving, and under attack by Pterafolk. At the height of combat, the captain of the ship is taken by one of the remaining enemies. The idea was to have the party either track them to the Pterafolks' roost or prioritize the crew, who was severely wounded and starving. My Paladin got the wild idea to load himself into a mangonnel and fore himself at the Pterafolk. I *probably* shouldn't have let that happen, but he managed to score a hit at long range with the mangonnel, at disadvantage, even, so I allowed ot to continue. He made an attack on the enemy, managed to kill it, and saved the captain, nearly killing himself and the captain in the process. They were both unconscious for several hours because he was the party's primary healer at that moment but were stabilized, and I got to improvise a standoff with some zombies at the shipwreck as a result, because the commotion from the airborne smite coupled woth the pair of humans crashing to the earth stirred up some slumbering zombies. Shit was wild.

Once my party and I found ourselves in the company of giants, my character was a overzealous overconfident glory seeking knight and I knew my character would want to challenge them at any cost because of the songs they'd write about him. He'd be a legend. At the time we were maybe level 2 so terrible decision on my part.

    I've absolutely had "It's what my character would do" moments, but you also have to consider whether your character is willing to ruin things for their party, and they are then that character would either not be with that party, or would get abandoned by the party going "Yes officer, this bitch just murdered a shop keeper for no reason, we tried to stop them but they're just a danger to society"

    4:40 - This is because you're ADHD and stumbled onto a good coping mechanism for your particular flavour of neurospicy, Vic. The tangible immediate task gives you something to feed the dopamine, which allows your brain to relax into the longer-term, low-dopamine tasks without panicking. It's a pretty good strategy. On a completely unrelated note, I was listening to this on the podcast & came here to add the above comment, and saw both of you for the first time. You are the third Millenial whom I have encountered with the name Vic(toria). All three are erudite outgoing ADHDers with red hair who play D&D and have folded all of that into their professional personae. Weird. As per the prior episode about EXP vs milestones, I doubt that you upset any old-timers by dissing EXP as being inferior to milestones. Who do you think invented it? Back in the day (running AD&D 2nd Edition) I did kind of a hybrid of the two. I awarded EXP, but I was the only one tracking it. I had a spreadsheet on my Macintosh Classic that kept a running tally on everyone's EXP, and when someone got close to levelling up, I would try to find a way to get them to the next beat for their character to justify the jump. Very easy for the paladin, the cleric, and the druid; not as easy for the fighter & the rogue.

      PS: a two-legged centaur is called an onokentaur (M: onokentauros, f: onokentaura), and they typically were depicted with the back end of a donkey & the front end of a human. Funny note: the onokentaur appears in the Septuagint--once for the Hebrew word ’íyyîm ("wild beast of the island", which maybe signified a jackal), and once for the word lîlîṯ ("wild beast of the night", which maybe referred to a female demon or maybe a screech owl). So, for anyone who is a Biblical realist, the onokentaur is technically real. ;-)

    Alternative leveling option... Players can gain that first level after 2 session and each level after takes roughly 25% more(rounded up) sessions per level. 2/3/4/5/7/9/12 et cetera. If playing weekly this would be 7 levels gained in about a year of playing(a few weeks short of a year if you are super consistent). You can use this method no matter what level your group is starting at, and you can reset the counter at any point in a campaign which signifies a step up in the challenges being faced by the group(great for when a campaign shifts between acts).

      Not necessarily suited to those groups who have weekend marathoner sessions that last over 20 hours each. Y'all are crazy, figure out your own system LOL

    I don't think that minmaxing is specifically good or bad. Depends on what you like as a player and what fits for your table. You can have a really heavy rp campaign and still minmax. We're currently in a campaign that has super heavy political undertone. Our party is the primary force that is used by the emperor of a nation for covert operations and high profile assasinations. We're all heavily optimized and rp is still the focus 70% of the time.

    About (not) min-maxing: I kinda accidentally make the most un-minmaxed decision 😂 I haven't actually tested it on table, but it was half-elf sorcerer, and she had heritages of silver dragon and white dragon It was 1st edition of Pathfinder, and there is archetype of sorcerer that allows to combine two heritages, but if I'm not mistaken if they have identical bonuses, they're aren't stacking BUT it was pretty much description of her personality: she has a noble goals, but very easily gets angered and will not hesitate to throw hands (and spells)
