La O - La LLorona
La O in Old San Juan: The Magic of Puerto Rico & the La Llorona Cocktail | A Taste of History & Mystery*
**Description:**
Welcome to another exciting adventure through Puerto Rico! In this video, we explore the colorful, historic streets of Old San Juan, immersing ourselves in the rich culture, vibrant history, and mystical folklore that make this island so special. As we stroll through the cobblestone streets, we’ll also uncover the story of *La Llorona*, one of Latin America’s most haunting legends, and introduce you to a cocktail inspired by her tragic tale: the *La Llorona* cocktail.
**Old San Juan: A Walk Through History**
Old San Juan is a city that feels like stepping back in time. With its charming colonial architecture, cobblestone streets, and colorful facades, the historic district of San Juan is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a must-see destination when visiting Puerto Rico. As we walk through the narrow alleys and bustling squares, we’ll take a deep dive into the history of this fascinating city, which dates back to the early 1500s.
From the towering El Morro fortress to the picturesque San Juan Gate, Old San Juan is a living museum of Puerto Rican culture. The city is an eclectic blend of Spanish colonial influences, Afro-Caribbean traditions, and modern Puerto Rican identity. Every corner, every building tells a story-whether it’s the centuries-old churches or the vibrant street art that lines the walls.
**The Legend of La Llorona**
“La Llorona,” or "The Weeping Woman," is one of the most well-known and chilling folktales in Latin American culture. The legend varies from country to country, but the core story remains the same: a woman, overcome by grief and despair, loses her children and is cursed to wander the earth, crying for them for all eternity.
The story typically goes like this: A woman, often called *Maria* in many versions, is a beautiful, loving mother who falls in love with a man who, after a time, becomes distant and unfaithful. In some versions, the man leaves her for another woman, while in others, he dies tragically. Consumed by jealousy and heartbreak, Maria, in a moment of madness, drowns her children in a river, only to immediately regret her actions. As she realizes the horror of what she has done, she is unable to retrieve their bodies, and in her grief, she herself dies.
But the tragedy doesn’t end there. Maria’s soul is condemned to wander the earth as La Llorona, forever searching for her lost children. She is said to weep and wail as she roams through forests, rivers, and towns, especially at night. Her mournful cries are a warning to others, especially children, to stay away from dangerous waters.
The legend of La Llorona has been a central part of Latin American folklore for centuries, with various regional variations across Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. It’s not just a ghost story-it's a tale of motherhood, guilt, and the consequences of a broken heart. It serves as both a warning and a reminder of the depths of human emotion and the power of grief.

For those following these adventures in real life, after La O you can head around the corner to La Grieta to continue the Mezcal experimentation.
Excellent choice! They have a great selection of mezcal and boast the perfect Old San Juan vibes tucked away in an alley. We will have to spoon there next!
This looks great! Send one over 😉
If you want to eat a good and tasteful sandwich, you should go to one of the bakeries in San Juan and look for the tripleta sandwich, with 3 different meats or you can try the medianoche, Jibarito sandwich is very delicious as well.
I LOVVVVVE me a tripleta! Definitely need to fork there and try your suggestions as well! Do you have any bakery in mind that you can recommend?
An Italian deli in Viejo San Juan???!!! Nena, byeeeeee!
Owned by a Boricua couple who lived in NY for a while with Italian roots. How cool is that! Worth checking out of you want something a bit different! 🍽️
I’m currently on the quest for the best Mexican in pr! Thanks for the content this is dope Ima check them out idk how I feel about mustard w Mexican food tho
Fair enough! But if you want classic Mexican try El Axelote (ask for the off menu birria tacos) or Callejeros (try the massive fried cheese wheel)!
@@IdForkIt i just relocated to the island due to the hurricane def no shortage of great food! def will try el aexlote thanks for the rec! my first stop for mexican food was Birria Drip food truck! im originally from long beach cali so def a tough critic when it comes to mexican lol
Yay! Biggest fan here❤
Hellynn!!!! You found me! Thank you for stopping by 🥰
I liked your video! I would suggest lowering the music a little bit so we can hear you better.
Thank you so much! Yes we are working on it since we are very much beginners in making videos! 🙈 But thanks to comments like this we can know what to work on. I appreciate it! 🙏
Zumiiiiiiiiii😭❤️❤️ and it’s “Birria” miamooor
MJ! You found us! 💕 I wanted to think that too but this place is beer and empanada so they call it birra 🤣 All I can think of is delicious birria tacos tho 🤤🤤🤤
YOU FOLKS LOVE TO FORK & SPOON AS WELL? I REALLY DO LOVE YOU !
Hahahahhahaaha and we love you! 😍
LOVE IT! Great idea. You have to review the Dark and Stormy at Antiguo 26.
Great idea! Come spoon with us, Lukas! 🥂
I don’t know why you would post a fake Italian spot in my country Puerto Rico. If you ever go back to Puerto Rico, you should only show genuine authentic Puerto Rican dishes.
I love that you have so much passion for Puerto Rican food! 🇵🇷 I also love tostones, carne frita and mofongo 🤤🤤🤤 We live in Viejo San Juan as residents and decided to just play around town at different restaurants and find different tastes! But let me know your favorite place and where to go next! Definitely open to suggestions and we are just getting started 🙏
@@IdForkItdo your thing.
ACEROLA not acerolo! Lol Empanadas are from Venezuela. We have Empanadillas, same shit but Puerto Rican.
Lollllllll oopsie daisy🙈 My Georgian friend told me about it after 3 drinks so my apologies 🫢 I am learning as I go so I appreciate the feedback 🙏 Please take me for good empanadillas! Luquillo? Or anywhere is VSJ?
@@IdForkItmy top empanadillas are in Rincon in Kaplash 😩👏 The fish ones are superb. If you manage to head west, it’s a must stop.
I'm loving your reviews 👍
For real?🥰 That makes me so happy to hear! You’re our number one fork buddy! 🍽️
@@IdForkIt YAY!!!
The best ones are in... - Casa España - Isla Verde, SJ
Ooooo thanks for the tip! Will need to check that out 🍽️
You should go to the west area Rincon beautiful beaches people from USA moving there nice place 🇵🇷👍
Yes! I love Rincon! Great idea to take this on the road 🍽️🚗
You sure are not selling the sandwiches.
Everyone has their own taste! Let’s celebrate that🥳
Those are the most gringo sandwiches I've ever seen in the island. Nothing boricua about them
We are looking to explore all kinds of food around the island and beyond! We welcome any suggestions so let us know where to go next!
she never claimed these were puertorican.... relax.
Not gringo, Italian.
I'm glad I'm italian. 🤣
@@danlewis4886 I’m glad you are too! And also jealous 🍽️🤤🍽️
I'm glad I'm Puerto Rican.
Good video 🇵🇷👍
@@AlejandroRodriguez-cc6go Thank you for stopping by! Let me know where else I should go! I bet you know a good place 🍽️
Disagree. You go to any hole in the wall mom and pop restaurant around there and order a pernil sandwich that blows that away.
Challenge accepted! Any particular recommendations?
@@IdForkIt lol nice! No particular place. Just a blanket statement to try any one of those hole in the wall places where abuelita is making pernil in the kitchen. Gotta be better than a charcuterie sandwich that you can get in many places stateside no matter how good it is. At least for me personally. I was psyched about a great sandwich shop in SJ and was dissapointed to see an Italian deli rather than authentic food from there. Especially since there are so many great Italian deli's in the Northeast and so few PR places where I live.
@ Yeah, you are totally right! We all have a different palette so I want to do this right and I appreciate the comment. Malavita for me has the taste that I love and I do in all honesty need to adjust my weird taste buds and expand my adventures to meet more abuelas with the real deal sammys that are legit puertorriqueño! I’m just starting out so I appreciate the comment and will try more places for you! Thank you for the feedback!🙏
@@IdForkIt Nothing weird about your taste buds. Everybody has what the like!
Using the fork for the mic is so on brand for the channel 🤣
@@samarycastro 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Good eye!
Was NOT aware sandwiches like these existed in PR! 😳 I’m definitely taking a trip to try. Thanks girly!! ❤
Yes! This sandwich answered my dreams 🤤 Let me know what you think!
Love it. Normally don’t eat in San Juan other than for my top 3 however the game has changed. I’m impressed. Great content thanks for doing this
Ooooo! Please share your top spots! Definitely looking to get to more places so I need all the recommendations please 🙏
Way to go Amy. Great video and love your outfit
