What is design?
Before you hire a designer its important to understand what you are hiring them for.
There is a common misconception that design is all about making things look good, and well, yes that is one element - but generally, functional things have their own aesthetic based around their function.
Design is not making pretty posters or logos - design is functional.
Graphic designers use visual elements to communicate information.
What trips a lot of people up is that making things look a certain style is functional, for example; you're running a business that sells flowers for weddings.
You will need to communicate that by meeting the expectations of your customers.
If your business is selling flowers for funerals, that would require a very different aesthetic - so communicating visually.
