Join me as I hike the famous Theth to Valbona trail in the heart of the Albanian Alps, part of the breathtaking Prokletije mountain range, also known as the "Accursed Mountains." This 12km journey takes me and my new friend Bobby, whom I met at a hostel in Theth, through vibrant autumnal forests, across rocky passes, and into one of Europe’s most stunning natural landscapes.
We start from the charming village of Theth, a gateway to Theth National Park, which along with Valbona National Park, forms a haven for diverse wildlife such as brown bears, lynxes, and golden eagles. As we ascend the Valbona Pass, we take in the vivid colors of autumn-reds, oranges, and yellows adorning the trees-and enjoy a simple lunch of bread, jam, cheese, and dates with a scenic view of the Theth Valley.
Reaching the Valbona Pass at around 1,759 meters, we are greeted by strong winds, thick fog, and dramatic views into the Valbona Valley below. This high point of the trail offers a striking contrast to the lush forests, with its jagged rock formations and expansive vistas. On our descent, we encounter towering cliffs, enormous boulders, and the ever-changing terrain of the Albanian Alps. We stop briefly for a traditional Albanian coffee and biscuits before continuing down into Valbona, where I check into a cozy hostel and warm up by a wood-burning stove.
The Theth to Valbona hike is part of the renowned Peaks of the Balkans trail and traverses two of Albania’s most iconic national parks. These parks are home to an incredible array of flora and fauna, including over 8,000 chamois, 113 species of birds, and some of the last brown bears in the region. The area’s unique geology features towering limestone peaks, deep gorges, and hidden caves, making it a UNESCO-protected site as part of the broader Balkan biodiversity hotspot.
This hike isn’t just a journey through nature; it’s a step into Albania’s cultural and natural heritage. From the traditional stone houses of Theth to the welcoming hospitality of mountain villages, the trail offers a glimpse into a way of life deeply connected to the land.
