Frigate 0.14 is a Game-Changer
Frigate is a great NVR that works closely with Home Assistant, up to now it's had a slightly clunky UI that evolved over time, with the imminent release of 0.14 the Frigate team re-written the UI and it's a game-changer.

    Hi, I have been using Frigate for the last year, was working fantastic with 6 dahua cameras and intel nuc with coral. After upgrading to Frigate 14 everything started to work bad. Even HA is rebooting, and doing crazy things. Frigate 14 is not showing me live view, and cameras are frozen, hang. Really strange. Can you help me?

    Bonjour, sur quelle configuration matérielle faites vous tourner frigate? Pour ma part malgré l’utilisation d’une clé usb Coral, je ne peux faire fonctionner que 3 caméras (Dahua 4mp). Ma configuration ne supporte pas plus. Je tourne actuellement sur ho elitedesk 800 (i5) en docker. Mon système est dévoué à l’utilisation de frigate.

    Would you be willing to make a tutorial on how YOU set up Frigate? What you show in the video is pretty great, and I've tried a few times to set up a Frigate instance through other youtuber's videos only to get as far as having 4 cameras added, and recording, but only showing me the first frame it receives in the preview in HASS... And then I had to reinstall HASS and I just want something that will work

    Incredible work. I'm trying to do the same with the solar inverter, but I've only been able to read the normal and binary sensors. And the switches work too. But when I try to code a number that should let me change, I am not able to make it work. That is, I don't know how to convert a sensor. in number. Any indication of how you have done it? Thank you very much!

    • @RodMcBain
      @RodMcBain 14 днів тому

      Thanks, I've not had to do this myself, the modbus climate devices allow for setting temps which was all I needed. I think what you want is probably to setup a sensor that reads the the value and an automation that writes the value with "action: modbus.write_register". You could create number helper and have that populated when the sensor value changes and an automation that writes the value when you change it in the UI.

    Since making this video there has been another beta release, two release candidates and the final 0.14.0 release is now available. In the RC1 release one of my main gripes was fixed, you now have the "Play Alert Videos" option in settings, disabling that turns the GIF style film strip into static images, just as useful but a lot less distracting 👍

      0.14.0 RC1 Added the "Play Alert Videos" option in the setting page which allows you to show static images for the alerts, works great and solves my complaint about the motion being distracting while keeping the notification of a recent alert.

    • @RodMcBain
      @RodMcBain 28 днів тому

      Yes they did, I think the argument was that it's not really a good tool for making a time-lapse and not many people were using it. I think it's a fairly simple job to use ffmpeg to convert an export into a time-lapse, but an annoying extra step if the previous export worked for you.

    Thanks very much for a great review video of the new UI. I've been a Frigate user for a while now, and haven't done an update recently. Wasn't broke, didn't need to go fix it :-) But this new UI is just amazing and certainly a reason to go update. It all looks so nice; should be easier for other family members to use. One funny thing to me is that I really want to try out the new mask/zone UI setup. As you said, the old configuration was functional but this new upgrade looks to be a big improvement in usability. I often need to update masks and such in the spring when my wife puts up hanging baskets and other decorate stuff that swings around in the breeze. This new capability will lower the barrier to going in to tweak those. Subscribed to your channel after being directed here for this Frigate video, nicely done!

    • @RodMcBain
      @RodMcBain 28 днів тому

      Thanks for watching and subscribing, every sub means a lot when your trying to grow a small channel, much appreciated. Surprisingly my wife's initial reaction was not positive, needed to explain how alerts and detections now get marked as reviewed when watched and disappear unless you toggle "Show Reviewed", but I think she likes it now, I know I certainly love it, 100% worth the upgrade. I don't think you'll be disappointed with the new masks / zone editor, mostly looks the same but just works as it should.

    Perfect video. This is a very stupid question. I have 3 Pylontech US2000C connected and working fine. Now I want to upgrade. What is the best way to shut down all batteries except for the one to update? Then update and do this for all batteries. Or can I keep them connected just upgrade each battery individually? before upgrading do I turn off the multiPlus as well

    • @RodMcBain
      @RodMcBain 28 днів тому

      The safest option is to shutdown the multiplus then press the round red power button on the master battery to switch them all off, then switch off the power rocker switch on all batteries, disconnect the link port cables. Then you can power on a single battery and update one at a time.

    Hi Rod, how do you have so much storage? Have you got a NAS for the storage and you allocate each camera 3TB? What cameras do you recommend? I saw someone mention Annke C500 3k camera and I'm thinking about getting a few to experiment with.

    • @RodMcBain
      @RodMcBain 29 днів тому

      I think the storage page has given you the impression I have more storage than I actually have 😀 So I do use the machine that's running Frigate as a NAS but I don't use that to store recordings, in addition to the NAS I have a single 4TB drive amzn.to/3YFlXto that stores recordings, I then copy saved / exported video to the NAS. I'm not that worried about loosing recording if that single drive fails. The storage page is showing 2.76 TiB / 3.58 TiB ( the 4 TB drive ) being used, then each camera shows what percentage of the 2.76 TiB is used by that camera. I have 4 ANNKE C500s, they're a reasonable compromise between price and quality, great during the day and acceptable (to me at least) at night.

    Great job, one slight mistake though. You didn't wrap around the starter track around the corners. This should have been done by cutting 45 degree angles at the end of your cut to match the next piece. Rodents can burrow up into the EWI where there's no track

    • @RodMcBain
      @RodMcBain Місяць тому

      Thanks, those corners were seriously lazy, I was aware I should cut at 45, but figured it would make little difference to supporting the EWI, I didn't consider the mice 🤦‍♂️ I'll stick some steel mesh under there to keep them out.

    • @GreenTorque
      @GreenTorque Місяць тому

      @@RodMcBain would you also consider insulating to ground level? Thermal modeling and thermal cameras show that it makes a significant difference and reduces thermal bridging. You can useexpanding foam to seal between the plynth and EWI you’ve already installed. Fair play, you did a great job overall, It's not an easy system to DIY because there's a lot of details that can be overlooked. There are other details you could have done to improve the installation but that's gold standard level and takes more time

      The machine I'm running it on is maybe not the best example, it's my old desktop with a Intel i5-4670 CPU @ 3.40GHz, 32GB Ram and a GeForce GTX 750 Ti graphics card. I offload the encoding / decoding to the GPU and use a USB Google Coral. The GPU and the Coral do most of the work and I'd say the Coral is essential. I also use this machine as a NAS, if it wasn't for that I'd maybe downgrade to something more efficient.

      There's a diagram in the video here ua-cam.com/video/qj07v10E4XA/v-deo.html that shows the RJ45 connection for the adaptor I used amzn.to/3YY0skB Your comment doesn't specifically mention a RS232 to USB converter, you can't just connect RJ45 to a USB connection you need a converter that changes the USB signal inso a RS232 signal, it's the pinout of the converter that you need to pay attention to.

      Thanks for taking the time to comment, really appreciate hearing the videos have been useful. I'm not super happy with the cameras I have so not sure I'd recommend any of them, I have some older generic dome cameras, a Realonk RLC-511W 5x zoom camera and more recently I've been buying Annke cameras, most of them are re badged Hikvision cameras, I have 2 C800 (1 dome and 1 bullet) and a couple of C500 bullet cameras. Frigate recommends Dahua, Hikvision, and Amcrest, in the UK Hikvision seems to be the only one of those that's easy to source and Annke is even easier to get and slightly cheeper.

    Hi Rod, love the Victron / solar stuff. I'm in the process of install my Victron system. Looking a your set-up I can't see a shunt? are you grid connected? Also when I purchased my Victron stuff the tech person told me that on a 100A domestic supply I could only have two 5kva inverters. How big is your domestic electrical supply. I have lots of questions any chance we could have chat.

    • @RodMcBain
      @RodMcBain Місяць тому

      Hi, With Pylontech batteries no shunt is required, the batteries have their own BMS that reports all the required data to the Cerbo GX. I am grid connected with a 100A single phase supply, I'm not aware of any sensible reason why you couldn't have more than 2 5kva inverters. Maybe the 50A transfer switch confuses some people. You do need to complete the G99 process to get permission from your DNO. Unfortunately I'm crazy busy and don't really have the bandwidth to help 1on1, I hope you understand.

    I don't use Topens products so not defending them but your gates in any wind are a nightmare to open/close due to the design of your gates. Need gates that aren't working against mother nature and catching all the wind that blows in that direction

    • @RodMcBain
      @RodMcBain Місяць тому

      Wind is definitely a concern, but I think the gates location shield it from the worst of any direct wind. It was also one of the reasons for the lock, to reduce any force placed on the arms by wind when closed. I can't say for sure but I don't think any of my problems with the faulty Topens arm are wind related, seem to be some combination of the crappy limit switches and the controller getting confused. Mechanically the arm seems fine, when the controller chooses to open / close, it works OK.

    Mate it’s July I don’t think your solar panels are producing much this month lol. Are these gate openers solar powered?

    • @RodMcBain
      @RodMcBain Місяць тому

      Technically yes, I have solar panels and batteries for my whole house, but no they are not directly solar powered, they take a normal 230v mains supply. I guess that's a potential advantage the Topens openers had, they came with a separate power supply that you could directly attach a battery and solar panels to.

    3 victron inverters, that’s impressive! How are they configured? Parallel or are they set up for 3 phase? If you have them in parallel, why have you gone for 3 of them? 2 car chargers? Planning on going off grid maybe? I recently went from one to two multis in parallel, wondering if I now need to add a third one.

    • @RodMcBain
      @RodMcBain 2 місяці тому

      Thanks for watching, they are configured in parallel, couple of reasons, the 70amp charge limit from each inverter is about how much is required to fully charge 4 US3000C batteries in the off peak window I get from my electricity supplier, so with 12 batteries I need 3 inverters, that's important in winter when I won't get anywhere near enough solar. Second reason is to have the ability to run off grid, I have no plans to go off grid but do run the whole house through the inverters and batteries, so if the grid goes down nothing stops working. We also have a 16kW heat pump, combined with an induction hob, washing machine etc you could easily get close to exceeding 12kW.

      @RodMcBain 2 місяці тому

      No rule that I'm aware of, drywall just doesn't seem to be as common over here, not really sure why. I'd also be reluctant to strap wood onto this wall to screw the boards to, adhesive is a lot more forgiving on an uneven wall.

    Typically when the sun is peeking out from behind bright clouds you can get generation well above the panel rating. But it's momentary at best. But mostly this just seems to be a case of not having enough solar panels for the size of the power and battery system they are feeding into. Usually systems of the size you have down below are fed with 10-20 kWp (nameplate) worth of panels. One thing you can do to improve production is not parallel any strings that might be impacted by shading, partial shading, or which have different orientations. Instead, give each of those strings its own smaller MPPT controller. An easy trick for soloing large panels is to put bolts and nuts in the frame holes on the bottoms of the panels. Then when you haul the panels up onto the roof you can rest the panel on the railing using the bolts as a door-stop to prevent them from sliding off the roof. Even though that isn't the final position, it makes it a lot easier to install the panels and I don't even bother removing the bolts after I'm done. -Matt

      Hi Matt, thanks for the comment, lots of useful info in there, this solar install is definitely just the start, as I mentioned in the video I have 9 more 420w panels to install and also plan to cover as much of my house roof as is practical. I think using 3 smaller MPPTs might have helped a little with this roof, but I expect the impact would have been minimal, the roof goes from fully shaded to not shaded at all in the space of an hour. I might try experimenting with this at some point to see what difference it makes.
