    The Sigma's are clearly the sharpest, particularly in the corners, but for what I do I like the look of the Arles the best of the three in this test. Shocking considering the price difference

    This was really insightful. Thank you for making this. It’s incredible how sharp the Sigmas actually are. The Arles look really nice though. Also surprising how wildly soft the sumire 50mm looked wide open.

      Isn't it based of the old Canon 50mm f1.2 EF photo lens? That was never very sharp, alot was sacrificed to get to f.1.2 - that said, it was being shown half a stop brighter than the other two in this comparison. Maybe it gets a bit of bite at f1.4.

    with a ~31mm image circle, will these cover a 6:5 anamorphic crop of a full frame sensor?

    • @habibifilmrentals5644
      @habibifilmrentals5644 7 місяців тому

      Depends on the camera and the horizontal image circle it's pulling when in 6:5 anamorphic crop, you could also punch into the sensor a bit to get full coverage, thought punching in right to the edge of the image circle will give you all the edge of image circle aberations that you may or may not want.

    These designs are very optmistic, but the market is crazy... so it's a good try to fool people with so many flaws... but also so many others weird things & compactness we like today. Just go back to HEAT (Panavision Anamorphic Super High Speed) to remember what is not a bugdet lens. Just imagine filming HEAT with these DZOFilm lens... ready ? Tell me.... @ T 5.6...

  • @CrossCory
    @CrossCory 9 місяців тому

    Very lovely lenses! I don't see much a different with these and the atlas orions except no flare color (which I prefer), smaller (also preferred) and price is cheaper (obviously preferred as well)

    • @habibifilmrentals5644
      @habibifilmrentals5644 9 місяців тому

      I would say having used the Atlas Orions on a number of shoots that the Pavos are a bit more dramatic in their character, which mostly stems from the swirly bokeh. The form factor and cost is definitely a big factor with the Pavos though! With anamorphic especially it's really a subjective thing, I can see people preferring the Orions and people preferring the Pavos look :)

    DZO lenses represent an abhorrently bad long term investment. I understand the market for them but having owned and used a few sets now, I can only advise to avoid. Too many compromises in quality and performance. At $30k for 6 lens set - you can expect to sell those 2nd hand at a 30%+ reduction within 12 months. These are not good quality, or good value, OR good investment lenses and at $30k these ARE going to be investment lenses.

    • @habibifilmrentals5644
      @habibifilmrentals5644 9 місяців тому

      We didn't shoot T4 for these specific tests, did some chart tests @ T4 to objectively review sharpness, there is considerable sharpening between T2.8 to T4.0. Interestingly if you side by side the Pavos with the Atlas Orions the sharpeness wide open is comparable between both sets, although the Atlas' are known for being soft wide open. These are definitely not as sharp wide open as the Laowa Proteus though, but it's a look!

      @@heroaomedia Orion is two times more expensive. Obviously 28mm is suffering from back focus IMO. At aperture of 5.6 you have to be able to put hair and eyes in focus. Maybe its just a focus misfire.

      We used a combination of ND Filters and ISO for tweaks, it's been a while but if I remember correct we never corrected more than a stop and a half via ISO and tried to keep everything base 800 for as much as possible. ISO tweaks was mostly used to make partial stop adjustments for lenses that were wide open.

    Look at 05:55 or 06:45, the shape of the head looks thicker on the Proteus than on the Orions, the proportions looks more natural to me on the Orions, this concerns also the whole background!

      True, though important to note that the focal lengths aren't an exact match (40mm vs. 45mm, 80mm vs 85mm) so they will have different levels of perspective and distortion
