Wow, that is going to be a rocket! Good pick though, I still carry this in the bag, but in hindsight, I would have preferred it with less loft, it goes up in the air pretty easily and I find mine at 19 degrees a bit too high of a ball flight. But I also play in a lot of wind, otherwise it's fine.

I would have to agree with you. I don’t think fitting makes such a big difference. The main reason I went was to try some shafts as the ones I had didn’t quite feel right. But then again, for a 10 handicapper, it’s really not going to make a huge difference. Still, it was a fun experience and I would recommend it if you’re unsure about what shaft you should be playing. To be able to try different stiffness and weight classes.

Yeah it’s a fun course for sure. Hope next time to have my A game when I play it again

Hey Stig! Yeah it’s fun to play, and the people are friendly for sure, but I wouldn’t necessarily expect to play my handicap there 😅. No matter what handicap you are, an 88 if it’s the first time playing there is totally reasonable. And an 81 is very respectable. There’s loads of blind shots and in general it’s a course you have to play several times before you can expect to score, if at all.

It’s been unbelievable. Played a few rounds with it now and it’s long and straight. Exactly what I needed 👌. How is yours working out for you?

200+ yards off a 3/4 swing. Not bad for a 60 year old... its a keeper !!!

So the grip is the one I use all throughout the video, instead of a traditional grip, right hand low, I switched it around and put my left hand low. This makes it feel like the putter is an extension of the left arm and seems more stable to me. If you’re using a traditional grip with putting, I would suggest you try it out as well. Of course it depends on what you prefer and on each person. I’ve completely switched over to the left hand low and still play like this today (two months after filming this video). Hope that helps

Hey Paul. This is great to read, happy you’re really enjoying the mini driver. I’ve only taken it out on the course twice now, but I can already tell that I’m in love with the thing as well. My home course is a narrow and dry course that really punishes long hitters. Everything slopes to the sides and your ball tends to roll off the face of the earth. Playing there, caused me to lose confidence in my driver and I had practically retired it. I was definitely not very consistent with it either, but other courses I played would allow for more dispersion, whereas my new home course does nothing of the kind. I’ve now had the mini driver out a couple of times, using it on nearly any hole I could and man what a sensation. Love the way it feels of the face, so easy to hit the sweet spot, and everything just wants to go straight! I’ve not hit some great ones off the deck yet. But I’ve got the 11.5 degrees set to 12, which is a hard one to get airborne and get a good ball flight on, but I’m going to try it out going forward for sure 👍

Hey hey, thanks! I have definitely seen an increase in distance as I moved to the more friendly and stronger lofted Mizuno 225s. Previously, with traditional lofted clubs, I would say I was 10 meters shorter on each club. Though I did prefer that precision on the shorter clubs

I have actually been trying to do a driver fitting and I used to always play titleist so that definitely has a chance for the bag! As for the putter, there are so many interesting shapes and forms of putting, I’m gonna focus on the putter I have because I also think you need to really get used to the putter and become one with it 😅. What putter do you use?

I use a LAB Mezz 1 Max putter. It's the best putter I've ever had. Check out LAB putters, they aren't cheap but will improve your putting. Life is short.

@@SunRider69 Haha yeah that's so true! I have looked at them before, but apart from not being cheap, I've also found them to be hard to get your hands on here in Portugal. I've had my eye on them since Adam Scott put one in the bag. Really like the consistency it seems to deliver

I have not been able to test true distances yet or even play it in the course, but I would say that it does go close to driver distance, especially if you can keep spin low and use the lowest setting. I personally have mine lofted up to around 12 degrees as I hope to also hit it off the deck every now and then. So mine would fly a bit shorter than my driver but with less spin and conditions in Portugal generally being dry, I would imagine it would roll out more

Hey Alan. Hehe yeah, you’ll find some of mine as well I think. Played it a few times now and for as much fun it is, it remains a roller coaster experience 😅. Monte mayor I’ve heard of several times but never been myself. Maybe next time I’m in Spain I can check it out. For now I’m based in Portugal and discovering more of the courses in the Algarve

Hi Bob We are staying at Marconfort Griego Hotel. We will be playing Torrequebrada, Calanova, Chaparral, and 2 others still to be decided. We may opt to play one of them twice. Hopefully weather improves in London. We just came back from Marrakesh after 10 nights. Played Sammanah, Al Maaden, Royal Marrakesh, Assoufid and Noria. Thinking going back February for an extended break. Beautiful part of the world and the golf courses are fantastic. But thank you for the Calanova tip and info. Going in early October. Chaparral is a course I’m very familiar with and I have some videos on my channel as well in case you want a sneak peek. Torrequebrada is a fantastic course, haven’t filmed it yet but played it twice now and it’s absolutely stunning. It sounds like you’ll be in the area of Mijas so I would also recommend you to check out Santana. It’s a bit away from the coast (no views) but it’s a loved course by many on the costa del sol. Hey Paul. I don’t think that’s unheard of. Let’s not talk about my first few rounds at Espiche 😅. It’s really a course you need to know and learn to play. On top of that, speaking to the pro and some of the members there, going up in handicap by 3 - 4 shots is pretty typical when joining Espiche. I’ve also found this to be true

@@justbobgolf I would play Palmares as my last ever round ! Amondoeria Faldo is a great course ( but we had a really bad 😞experience with the management/a buggy). Boavista was good but we would not return, after waiting over an hour to play the Par 3 6th (over the ravine) it made for a 5 1/2 hour round 😡🤬🤬🤬 the people in front really could not make the carry, but refused to let us through or to pick up !.............. but in all honesty there are no bad courses, just the odd bad hole.

@@paulbailey2642 yeah I’ve played the Faldo and the O Conner, both fantastic courses indeed. Palmares was just sold to a huge investment firm, so I’m curious to see what they will do with the place. Apparently they are planning to transport greens from another golf course they own to Palmares as they had some problems there 😳

Yeah I tend to find the loop 1 - 18 better as well. Although the 19 - 27 can be fun, as that side feels a bit more like a true Scottish/irish links course. Just with good weather 😅

Generally speaking you would be completely right, however, for these carry distances, I took the numbers from two driving ranges, both with Top Tracer machines installed, these machines are slope adjusted and also have a ball adjustment for range balls, which generally tend to go 10% less distance. So they give accurate numbers on distance no matter the layout of the driving range. I found them to be very much in line with what I see on the course, so it’s pretty reliable.

As for club fitting. Im not totally convinced 😅. I’ve played great golf, potentially even better golf with some clubs I bought myself, which didn’t have lie adjustments, standard length shafts, and generally not the perfect shaft for me. One issue I find with club fitting is that it really depends on the fitter you get and how experienced they are. On top of that, all fittings I’ve done were only with the iron 7, and while I hit that one fine, and get good ball flights. I find that my 4 and 5 iron aren’t that good for me, or at least they aren’t flying as much and tend to roll out more. Which isn’t great. So in the future if I do it again. I would want to do a fitting going through the whole bag, not just a 7 iron. Club fitting also depends on how you are hitting them that specific day. This is not necessarily something bad about the fitting itself, but I find that my swing changes just about every week 😂 One last thing to add: I would always do a club fitting from turf. Not a mat.

@@justbobgolf I absolutely loved it. My first time in the Algarve. Stayed at the Boavista resort and played there twice and 1 times espiche. I loved how quiet espiche is and the layout in general. It’s a tough course though with many blind spots :D and what a beautiful clubhouse which you can see through the hole course. I was in the Algarve with my mom and this year we will return with my dad and brother as well. Really looking forward to it! You’re blessed to be a member there! I’m a member at het Woold in Asten/heusden in the Netherlands. I guessed you are Dutch as well? I can be wrong though :P

@@mithrandirrr oh nice! It’s a beautiful area of Europe in general and some great golf courses overall. I do consider myself lucky to be a member there, the course is amazing, the clubhouse definitely is a wonderful design and the staff are some of the friendliest people in all of the algarve. I’m indeed originally from the Netherlands, though emigrated 10 years ago pretty much. I do still go back regularly. I’ve heard great things of “het woold” as well. Never played there though. I learned to play at The Wouwse Plantage, fun course as well. Well I might run into you in April there, have a fun golf trip with your father and brother 👌

Yeah that course is wild! I mean it’s pretty fun playing once or twice, especially considering I’m coming from mostly flat terrain. But I don’t think it’s a course to be taken very seriously. It’ll be hard to have a really great round around there

That is correct. The premise of this challenge was that if I would become a member of the Spanish Golf Association, I would have to start on handicap 28. I wasn’t allowed to get a lower handicap since I didn’t have an official handicap in over 10 years, and the only way to lower a handicap apparently was by playing in official tournaments. That was the inspiration behind this challenge. So I played 5 rounds to see where my handicap would land roughly if I started at 28. But by all mean my handicap is more around 10 👍

I got the standard Hzrdus that came with it in stiff. I believe it’s 6.0 80 grams.

Cheers. I just bought a set of 225s as they were on sale. Great deal. I got a 4i and it’s obviously the same shaft as the rest 110g but I was thinking of moving to a lighter shaft. Say 80g like yours.

Hmm they have very recently been taken over by another group, but I find it hard to believe that they would’ve already changed processes and their reception staff. I personally think you’ll be fine, but of course maybe keep another option backed up. There’s a couple of courses in the vicinity of Palmares, like Espiche, Boavista, Penina and all the Pestana courses like Gramacho.

Hmm hard to say, I chose this specific club because my current course is quite tight. For me it’s either this club or a 7 wood or 5 wood. It doesn’t replace my 3 wood

Hey Mathias, I have around handicap 10, but the point of this challenge was to start at handicap 28 and see how far I would get down in five rounds. The reasoning behind this was that if I would get an official handicap in Spain, I wouldn’t have been allowed to take my handicap with me and I would have the lowest handicap they would give me in Spain, would be handicap 28. I’d then have to play official tournaments to get my handicap down. Hope that explains it 😀

Thanks so much, it’s a lovely course there. Yeah I always try to walk if possible. Definitely not the easiest task and the walk/hike can definitely wear you down after 18 holes.
