As a landscape astrophotographer, forget the ball head. Best pano head = Acratech. Best 2 ways head = Leofoto VH-20 or Sirui L-20S. Using them with leveling base and you are good to go anywhere.

Nice setup! Looks like it is super flexible! And funny - if things work out I was planning on a 4Runner walk around of my setup this week as I return from a weekend out! My first Olympus camera from forty years ago had aperture priority, and for me it is still the most intuitive. Generally I'll select an f-stop for the type of picture I want to create. I'll pick an ISO on the general lighting conditions and then check the exposure. I generally prefer 1/250th or faster. If not, I'll play all three controls to get the exposure I want.

Great video - I was curious how you'd like the Jeep! Have you ever owned a Jeep before? Here's a couple of tips from someone that has owned three different Jeeps over the years (all differing models - my first was my favorite - a lifted and locked YJ. Wait until you experience your first 'death wobble'! Those are the best and freakiest! ;) Get used to chalking up unusual behaviors to "It's a Jeep Thing." Now that you're into a more off-road capable vehicle (a great choice), start measuring 'miles per smiles' instead of 'miles per gallon'. WIll keep you sane in the long run! My 4Runner has a very good MPS, I suspect your Jeep does as well! Oh - and I can't believe you slept in that back seat! I can't imagine that was comfortable at all. Hopefully you don't have to do that too many more times. Keep the videos coming, I'm going to love following your Alaska adventure vicariously through your videos!

I was wondering what you were going to do for sleeping - wasn't sure if you are going camper shell/slide-in type thing or like a tear drop trailer approach. A camper shell/slide-in should be pretty nice. Keep those videos coming so I can live vicariously through your adventures this summer! And have fun!!!

    • @johnrobertsonphotography

@JeffreyTadlockPhotography Hey Jeff! I wasn't expecting to buy a Gladiator either! But, combine steep discounts on the 2023 and comparing it to other available midsize trucks and I decided to pull the trigger. It definitely has its tradeoffs. I had an opportunity to observe and photograph the short eared owl, this past winter, at a drive thru national wildlife refuge, north of Vancouver, Washington. You must stay in your vehicle, which also serves as a blind. It was amazing to watch them. Patience is key, as you said. My last 3 trips there in early February, there were at least 20 cars parked and waiting several hours, hoping that they would come out before sunset. They did not. Mega camera and lenses were waiting, propped up inside the car, next to the cars’ windows. Will try again next season. It seems they were out earlier in the day, at times, in late November and December. You might get a glimpse of them ‘napping’ during daylight hours, in the dried grasslands next to water and marshes. They camouflage very well against the dried grasses, and may be visible right from your vehicle.
