Why was Ne5 a miss?
Knight never moved to e5 square. And if you are talking about why is Ne2 a miss, It is because the other knight to a4 was a better option threatening the queen. And if the queen moves Nxg7 square pawn and the rook is gone.

It's not exactly scholar's mate. It would have been considered as scholar's mate only if I could have mate it in just 2 moves. However it can be called as a variant of scholar's mate.

Well tried, but "repetitive check" Itself isn't officially a separate draw condition, it frequently results in a draw by causing threefold repetition.
And if the criteria for threefold repetition is not achieved by repetitive checks then it is not considered as draw.
