Su-22 was the Sukhoi Design Bureau's solution to the requirement for a new variable wing geometry fighter. Sukhoi's idea was that not the whole wing rotates, only the outer half, which has the advantage of avoiding the very complex rotating mechanism of a fully variable wing, and weapons can be affixed under the fixed inner half. MiG on the other hand went for a fully variable wing design, and designed the MiG-23, which turned out to be the most challenging project in the MiG Bureau's history. Artyom Mikoyan suffered a heart attack from which he never fully recovered.

Piękny samolot, pięknie prezentuje sie w powietrzu:) Tyle ze to samolot uderzeniowy a nie myśliwiec. Wywodzi sie z Su 7 ktory przegrał konkurs na myśliwiec z Mig 21. Su 7 znalazł swoją niszę preniszenie bimby atomowej RDS 4 i jego dalszy rozwój szedł w kieruku zwiększenia możliwości bombowych. Zaprojektowano niwe skrzydło o zmiennej geometrii oraz zastosowano nowy silnik. Tak powstal Su 17. Na eksport nazwany Su 20 a nowsze wetsje Su 17M nazwano na eksport Su 22.
