3 Year Update
A commenter this summer was asking how things are looking in my pond and my neighbor's pond after a few years so here's a quick update.
This fall I'll make a video where I open up the intake bay vault and the bog filter clean out and see what's going on there.

What happened to my natural bog garden pond after 2 weeks with no filter?

Whelp, after a couple years of continuous operation we finally had a power outage while we were away on vacation. The pond went for at least 2 weeks with zero filtration. In this video we rehab the pond and do some water quality tests.
Building a Spring Fed Pond!?
Переглядів 8 тис.Рік тому
While walking around the homestead I found what might be the source of a spring in a wet area. This is the one un-frozen area of ground after several below freezing days. I'll keep my eye on this area and if it stays flowing during the winter come spring we'll dig a pond.

These is all it takes to get our fish pond ready for winter. Depending on the pond system design that you're using this may or may not be right for you. We're in hardiness zone 5b so it gets pretty cold here in winter.

How to find leaks in your garden pond, intake bay, and bog filter before winter

Getting the pond ready for fall and winter by getting ahead of a troublesome leak.This video will show you some pond building principles that should help you track down any leaks happening in your pond so you can be ready with a full intake bay of leaves and not have to worry about running your pump dry once the pond freezes.
Aquascape vs Garden vs Koi DIY Pond Builds and how we chose

We redesigned our pond at least 3 times with 3 completely different build philosophies before we determined what was going to be right for us. The truth is that there are lots of ways to construct healthy, functioning ponds to meet your needs and budget so make sure to research competing ideas before you start your project. How to use a WATER LEVEL to build an INTAKE BAY for your garden pond

My neighbor is building an awesome garden pond of her own, and in this video we're going to check that out and show how to dig out an intake bay. Most importantly we're going to show how to build and use a tool that can save you a lot of time and pain by showing you how water is going to flow in your pond and bay BEFORE you test fill it: a water level!

    I’m in North Texas…my kitchen sink pond has a liner, but I’m pretty sure it’s evaporation. It’s brutally hot here (feels like of 120F). It’s shaded the latter part of the day, but between the hot breezes, and sun…unless the wasps are taking it down…sip by sip… Once the heat breaks (Nov? Sooner? Please?) I’m setting up my little hard liner pond w/a bog filter. Too hot to do much even in the evenings.

    The ponds look great. Thank you for the update. I see your neighbor has lotus in her pond. Does lotus survive the winter over there?

    • @thefrogbath
      @thefrogbath 20 днів тому

      She brings her lotus into her garage for the winter because it's only set about a foot down. I think her pond is deep enough that she might be able to get away with dropping it all the way down to the deepest part of her pond in winter and then bringing it back onto the shelf when it warms but it's risky and the garage seems to work well.

    You should defo put another plant (rush or reed) in your pond, and some gravel/sand in the bottom to cover the liner .,.

    I’m helping my mother rejuvenate her yard and a pond is part of the tasks. She wanted to use chemicals, but I said let’s look into plants and ways to deal with what’s going on VS getting a product for an immediate solution. I saw all stages of damselflies, tadpoles and snails in there… I said we need to protect them and let them help us. Let’s get some plants that will benefit us and not treat it like a pool. Now that I’ve looked into algae, I’m going to look into why the water is so dark ❤❤

    I'm confused- won't the measurements be affected by how much water you put into the tube?

    • @thefrogbath
      @thefrogbath 2 місяці тому

      Sort of. There is a minimum length of tube and amount of water required based on the size of your hole (or whatever space you're measuring). Because the water in the tube is self leveling though, there is no maximum length of tube, it'll just get a bit unwieldy. If you don't have enough "empty space" on either side of the tube (too much water) then as you move the tube trying to get the water level where you want, it will overflow and you'll have to refill the tube. If you don't have enough water in the tube you won't be able to lay it against the side of your pond to represent your desired waterline because it'll just sit low in the tube. It is a confusing concept, sorry if this explanation isn't useful.

    I know this is an older video, but I have string algae in a separate pond that does not have fish. It just has plants the lower pond where the fish are is fine, but I can't control it in the upper pond now they do share the same water system, as it goes through a pump from the fish area up into the upper pond and then flows back down. Is there anything I can add to that or just let it be? My worry is the pond isn't as deep as the other one so I usually don't put fish up there due to it icing in the winter.

    • @thefrogbath
      @thefrogbath 3 місяці тому

      You can always add plants and in time they'll replace the plant you have now (the string algae).

    How deep is the intake bay inlet to keep the water flowing through the system under the ice?

    • @thefrogbath
      @thefrogbath 7 місяців тому

      Not that deep, the current keeps it moving. The inlet is maybe 10 inches to 1 foot if the water is high

    Couple of notes, the Algae would be absorbing the nitrates and phosphates, hence the bloom. Algae is a natural filter, but, you could pull out the heavy growth and dispose of in your garden. Physically removing it will help from die off and then the cycle of nutrients release and process starts all over again. Just a thought 👍🏻

    • @thefrogbath
      @thefrogbath 2 роки тому

      What you need will depend on the pump model you select. My neighbor and I have the same pump and in our case we use 1.25" ID flexible PVC also sold as "spa tubing" from local big box hardware stores. Around here 25' is about $115. This fits directly onto the largest quick coupler that is packaged with our pump.

    great channel name.. does what it says on the tin.. :-) my own pond has a shed load of frogs,and spawn,every spring..most of the tadpoles get mullered by the fish,and other frogs, but I have a smaller pond that trickles into the main one (as a natural filter) so always put a good glob of spawn in there as it's predator free.. never fails to make me smile seeing tiny froglets all over the garden .. saying that when it gets chilly every single adult and young frog suddenly vanishes like magic until the following springtime again.. hope all's well in your part of the world..regards.p
