Purple Reign (Prince)
This person died in 2016 at age 57. He won an Academy Award in 1985, and a Webby Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006. He was still a teenager when he was signed to Warner Bros Records, in a deal that included full creative control. His work inspired the formation of the Parents’ Music Resource Center, which pressured record companies into labeling albums to warn of explicit content. In 1993 he changed his stage name to an unpronounceable glyph, and for a while he was referred to as “The Artist Formerly Known As”. His chart-topping hits included “Let’s Go Crazy”, “When Doves Cry”, and “Purple Rain”. Today’s dead celebrity is Prince.

It’s just you, a palm tree, a DVD player (streaming hasn’t reached desert islands), and the IMDb catalog of a single performer. Who would you choose? This thought experiment was first proposed by Michael Osborne in our Bill Paxton episode...

Norm’s medical and health issues are no one’s business but his family and himself. Being a celebrity does not mean the world needs to know EVERY IOTA of your existence. It’s called a “private life” for a reason.

He was a cab driver in LA not in Mass. I never heard where he stiffed him, but Leonard did say they talked until he got to Mr. Kennedy's location. I believe he gave up smoking in 1984 and drinking in the late 1980s. He Married Susan Bay in 1989, she talked him into giving up drinking. He admitted to being an alcoholic. He took William Shatner's alcoholic wife, Nerine Kidd, to AA meetings, unfortunately it didn't help her. She drowned in their pool. He never regretted Spock. He always said if he could only be one of his character's it would be Spock. He said since Spock, he never had to look for work. Like you said he played on Broadway, Tevya, he also did Equus, & Sherlock Holmes. He wrote and portrayed Theo in the one man show Vincent. He also portrayed Mel Mermelstein in Never Forget and was Morris Meyerson in A Woman Named Golda. He said Spock influenced his own life. Beside his acting, he was a writer, song writer, singer, author, poet, director, photographer, philanthropist. His photography hangs in several museums. He not only was on Twilight Zone episode Quality of Mercy he played Hanson; he directed an episode of Outer Limits about a vampire. He also acted in I Robot in1964 and later the lawyer, Thurman Cutler in a later version directed by Adam Nimoy (his son) in 1995. I agree Leonard was extremely intelligent. It seems anything he tried he succeeded at. I loved him from the first time I saw him, still do. You guys didn't do bad. Thank you. REST IN PEACE, LEONARD. LLAP

Interesting discussion. I was impressed with the depth of your research. A few corrections to your research. Nimoy did not talk to Shatner for the 5 years before his death. Basically Nimoy put up with the guy until he retired from public life in 2010. Just like putting up with any other co-worker. Nimoy gave up alcohol many years before he gave up cigarettes. Nimoy "ruthless" - no but he was having lunch with Henry Fonda in London who said he had seen Spock on billboards and hoped he was being paid well. He wasn't being paid at all so he sued Paramount and would not perform in the first Star Trek movie until they fixed that. Re: "Heated arguments" with Gene Roddenberry yes on behalf of first Nichele Nicoles who was not being paid as much as the 2 other regulars on the bridge - George Takei and Walter Koenig and then when he refused to voice his character Spock in the animated series until Nichols and Takei were hired to voice their characters and Koenig was hired to write an episode. Roddenberry himself called him "the conscience of Star Trek". Nimoy also would not be bullied himself. One famous incident was when he left the set when Roddenberry wanted a cut of his personal appearance income. Another was when Shatner tried to stop an interview with Nimoy by TV Guide on set and Nimoy would not perform until it was allowed to proceed as described by George Takei. Nimoy was surprised at the first Star Trek convention he went to that there were 3000 people there. Nimoy's wealth came from more from his directing and producing movies. The actors in Star Trek got no residuals after 4 years I believe it was. Upset about Nimoy's wealth - first look up Shatner's before you complain about that and Nimoy was a patreon of the arts for example - there are 3 theaters named for Leonard Nimoy - the one at the Griffith Observatory in L.A., one for the Thalia Theater on Broadway and one in Los Angeles. His donations are over $1 million for each. “I’m very proud of having been connected with the show,” he wrote in 1975. “I felt that it dealt with morality and philosophical questions in a way that many of us would wish were part of the reality of our lives.” I think you should explore science fiction a bit. This is speculative fiction and written by in many cases scientists about their work. Not understanding it is a flaw to be corrected. My final comment is read the book before you psycho analyze the person in any of these discussions. Nimoy was very clear about it. He never meant the title to mean he disliked the character to start with so read where the title actually came from and the fact that he was told not to name it that because people would misunderstand. Overall a good discussion of Nimoy's biography.

Thanks for this thoughtful response, and, to be perfectly honest, your 100% correct in that we did not do a sufficient amount of research before recording this episode. In fact, that was largely true for our first 8 episodes. By episode 9 (Kenny Rogers) we realized that we had to do better. Not to make excuses, but hopefully you'll find our more recent episodes to be more accurate and true to the figure. Regardless, in the specific case of Leonard Nimoy we missed an opportunity. Again, thanks for taking the time to offer this thoughtful response!
