I spent about three years in the Jesuits and your experience is somewhat different from mine. I suggest you read 'Obedient Men', by Dennis Meadows, but with a big pinch of salt. I joined the order in 1962 and was attached to the English Province. In partial answer to R Scot tLogan's post, I went to a catholic school and decided to join the priesthood. The choice was becoming a secular priest or a regular priest, like the Dominicans or the Jesuits. (There were also the Carthusians I considered and I visited the Parkminster priory in the UK and had a lengthy conversation with the friar who had been given permission to meet me.) After the Jesuit novitiate I was sent to France, to the philosophy college at Chantilly, just north of Paris. I decided eventually to leave the order and go to university in the UK. I chose the University of Sussex, after which I took a PhD from University College London. At Sussex I met a Japanese man who practised the Japanese martial art of aikido and began to practise. My main sport was cross-country (marathon) running and Sussex was a very good university for this. Because of aikido, I became interested in Japan and its history and culture. I am now an emeritus professor at Hiroshima University, but have lived here since 1980. I am also a 7th dan in aikido.
I truly don’t know how any Catholic young man with deep faith could consider joining the Jesuits today!
Could you explain why? I know they were behind the inquisition, but not that familiar otherwise.
Satan's soldiers!!
Hello! I have come across this series of videos while looking for 'teaching' materials to teach English to the novices at the Novitiate in Valparaíso, Chile. We have used the videos in class and have enjoyed them enormously, both from the language and content points of view. We have discussed and reflected on some of the same questions you have posed in the different Bios; we have been challenged by the variety of accents but at the same time we have had access to a reach source for pragmatics and semiotics. Most importantly, we have learnt from you and laughed with you. It has been an amazing experience. Thank you.
Wow, Jannett! We are so glad to hear that you have enjoyed these videos and have used them with the novices to learn English. Thank you so much for your feedback! Please let the novices know that we said "hello" and "hola" - we are also learning Spanish! Many blessings.
it is so nice
Not too bad for Jesuits. Still, I'm pretty sure the Benedictions aren't worried about competition yet.
Beautiful
nice work brothers!
