FLY HIGHER: Unleashing Resilience & Courage with Combat Pilot Sarah Furness - The Leadership Lounge
In this episode of The Leadership Lounge, we speak to Sarah Furness.
After graduating from Cambridge University, Sarah followed her dream to become a combat helicopter pilot in the RAF. As a Squadron Leader she led on operational combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan and she was the first female helicopter pilot to fly and lead UK Special Forces missions in Iraq. During her experiences both at home and at war, she made two important discoveries;
- resilience and performance under pressure is NOT instinctive
- BUT humans have an extraordinary ability to thrive and even excel under pressure when they know how.
She now has ONE mission. To share the secret to outstanding resilience, performance and courage “under fire”.
Sarah is the No1 Best Selling author of FLY HIGHER - train your mind to feel as strong as you look. All of her mental training techniques are backed by science and proven in combat. She is fluent in “alpha male” and whilst she takes her work seriously, she doesn’t take herself too seriously. She has an 8 year old son who she adores and who inspires her every day.

    An organisation which truly takes into consideration the human factors of its workforce (rather than just paying lip service) is one which deserves to flourish and thrive. The so called managers in some of the places I have worked would certainly benefit from a leadership training course delivered by Di Worby of Global Air Training. Thank you for this compelling and enlightening podcast. Keep up the good work.

    John is such a humble guy with amazing leadership qualities that he's oblivious to. What stood out for me was how he talked of the part everyone else played in the successes he's had. That ability to command the respect he has, is leadership in spade loads. It still rings true today. Look at the accolades he receives several times daily on LinkedIn. He is so well respected and has a work ethic like no other. Those qualities are what makes you your Dad's son, John. Your life results are just like his but you took a slightly different path. Success will always be about doing the right thing when no-one is looking, and you always do that. He raised a good 'un 👏

    After a couple of minutes I found myself sitting up and wanting to hear more of what Claire had to say. If she doesn't think of herself as a leader, it's probably because she has all the attributes of a good leader but doesn't realise it. It is just her natural self to communicate well, empathise with a team and show care and consideration for them. Members of a team "allow" themselves to be lead, and they are more likely to do that if their leader is a likable person. And you don't have to become "one of the lads" to be liked and respected! A very worthwhile thought-provoking 20 minutes, well done to you both.

    Really enjoyed listening to this. I'm just a small company with only me at the moment but being an interior designer I've worked on many sites where I've had to manage tradesman. So I relate to what Mike said about it not working without the team and trusting that team too. I always did my best to make each trade feel valued on site. And one day when I have grown the business more and have a full time team I'll remember Mike's comments and his advice! So Thank You

    My mother always talked about the "Stupid Tax". I regularly tick it off in my mind with a smile when I find myself paying it. 😊❤ Great interview. What energy. And so self-effacing. That's a great quality. Interesting the importance of having a vision. Even without the skill-set, the vision itself is enough - and the skill-set will come. Rather insightful that the qualities you admire in others are qualities you recognize in yourself that you want to develop. Very deep. That 20 minutes raced by. One of the best.
