기억을 되감는 것은 내게 있어서 독극물일 뿐이었다. 사람은 살아가며 스스로의 세상을 미화시키는 생물이라고 한다만, 내게는 아름답게 보일 세상이 없었다. 온갖 잡념을 일삼는 영혼과, 그런 나약한 영혼에 달라붙어버리는 거머리들과, 함께 때어줄 자 없는 각박한 세상. 기억이 흐릿해지기 시작한 것은 그보다 훨씬 오래전부터일지도 모른다. 혹은 기억이 흐릿해지고 있다고 스스로 단언하고 포기하고 있다거나. 공교롭게도 내 세계가 색을 되찾는 일은 없었다. 알코올에 절여진 마왕이 매일같이 거처를 전쟁터로 만들었다. 하루가 빠짐없이 나는 묵인했으나, 마왕의 눈이 붉은 색으로 물들었을 때 나 또한 눈을 붉게 물들였다. 나는 주방에 있었다. 무엇을 할지 고민했다. 가벼운 마음으로 과도를 꺼내들었다. 그의 등을 찌를수도 있었을 것이다. 그의 목에 날붙이를 꽂아 넣고 그에게 짓눌린 피해자를 구할 수도 있었을 것이다. 몸이 무거웠다. 그래서 그저 소리지르며 경찰에게 전화를 했다. 경찰은 별다른 조치를 하지않고 돌아갔다. 하지만 마왕은 자신이 피해자인 것처럼, 내 세계에서 자신을 불태우곤 몇일 지나지 않아 모습을 감췄다. 그래서 기억을 되짚어보면, 철없던 시절의 즐거웠던 일과, 여럿 추억과, 그것을 뒤덮는 먹물같은 온갖 거뭇한 감정들이 좋았던 것들을 뒤덮어 뒤틀고, 지우고, 더 추악한 무언가로 변모해간다. 차라리 기억을 잃는 것이 나을지도 모른다. 여전히 그것들은 가끔, 아니 자주 내 이불 속으로 기어들어와 내 옆에 나란히 눕는다. 이제는 나를 뒤덮으려는 것처럼.

I've witnessed many departures and experienced unsaid goodbyes. It hit hard when I remembered how I graduated quicker from high school in 2020 because of Coronavirus. I had a hope that maybe, just maybe, I could say goodbye directly to my friends one last time before we parted ways. How I wished it wasn't a false hope... I'm slowly learning to not feel as attached anymore, because there's just no point when the ending of the stories remain the same. I'm not sure if being desensitized to any losses is a good thing either ; the only thing keeping me going in this life is perhaps the fear of death.
