Connecting Victron to Home Assistant using MQTT
Hi Everyone, In this video, I show you how to locally connect your Victron device (such as the Cerbo GX) to home assistant using MQTT. This way you can control and monitor your Victron devices and use home assistant for automation and creating better dashboards.

Making WLED Projects Run off USB C! (Power Delivery)

In this video, I show you how to make any WLED Projects run off of USB-C Power Delivery. I made a mistake, during my testing I had the brightness limiter on, at full brightness, a 8ft strip with 150 LEDs will pull 9.3 watts, not 2.7 watts. If you have a Power Delivery charger, you have 15 watts available at 5V 3A, if you are using a USB-A charger, that will vary. The fine print on the charger s...

What if you have a very long probe cable? I have a 15m cable connected to a wifi temp sensor right now but want to change it to an ESP board to get faster reporting. Do I still need the resister if I have this length cable?? Thanks.

I managed to integrate Victron VRM into home assistant, but with a small problem: the data is only available when I connect with my VRM application on my phone. As soon as I am no longer connected via my application, the data is no longer updated in home assistant. How to fix this problem ?

This really is a great video. However, This can also be done with the 'HACS' Add-on using the 'Victron GX modbusTCP integration'. It passes through all possible data and is far easier to install and configure.

Wow, mind blown 🤯 This is an amazing crash course in MQTT and Victron and Home Assistant. I have all these systems living on islands because I’ve never had any luck with setting up the MQTT broker. This was a high speed crash course that delivers so much information into a highly compressed timeline. Great job.

If you are runnig Venus OS 3.20 or later you can avoid message flood by publishing '{ "keepalive-options" : ["suppress-republish"] }' on 'victron/R/YOUR-SERIAL-NUMBER/keepalive' using a periodic timer, and to get all topics (like first connection) you can publish to the same 'keepalive' topic but with no message and it will query all topics. Hope this helps :)

Hi, thank you for your vid but I'm stuck at 4:29. I put credentials in samba share but I don't have home assistant poping in network (except my link to home assistant web browser) , what should I do ?

    • @juanpierredutoit4293

Just pop in your homeassistant IP into explorer "If you are on Windows you use \\<IP_ADDRESS>\, if you are on MacOS you use smb://<IP_ADDRESS> to connect to the shares." Thats where you enter the Samba creds you made.

FYI 'touch.Victron.conf' is not the name of the file you want to create (of course, you can if you want). "touch" is a linux command that creates an empty file, thus "touch Victron.conf' creates a file, 'Victron.conf'.

sorry for the late response, it sounds like home assistant is only showing up under "other devices" on the network page in file explorer. It should be showing up under the "computer" section. On my laptop I couldn't get it to show up properly using samba share either, so I had to map network drive. Here is the resources I used. community.home-assistant.io/t/samba-share-not-accessible-through-windows-10/352134/2 I got it to work using the info posted by francis, and I entered the credentials set in the samba share addon. Hope this helps!

Hmmmm. I'm not entirely sure, I bet you would have to add both to the victron.conf file. But would probably have to use different variables for the topics (N and R). Then you would probably have to add another path to the keep Alive automation using the new variables for the second cerbo.

Another difference worth mentioning. The ZBMINI-L2 Extreme is only a Zigbee end device and cannot act as a router. If you have a large home and use only these, you may get in trouble with wireless range. Add some ZBMINI with N wire to bridge the gap. They consume more power, but they are routers as well.

It says on the ESP website under Dallas Temp sensor. "The 1-Wire bus the sensors are connected to should have an external pullup resistor of about 4.7KΩ. For this, connect a resistor of about 4.7KΩ between 3.3V and the data pin. Values ± 1KΩ will, in most cases, work fine as well, if you don’t have massively long wires."

I could not get this to work as the ESP board would not come online after entering the wifi credentials. I kept giving up but really wanted this to work. I finally figured out the issue which was not with the board or this tutorial, it was an issue with my router setup. There's some setting in there that wont allow the board to connect, I confirmed this by connecting to a different router, one i use as an access point which is on the same network. It connected straight away and the rest of the tutorial worked perfectly. So if you have that problem where the board doesn't come 'online' after the install, try looking at your router settings! Thanks guy, this is such a good ESP/home assistant project and a really cheap way to have many temperature sensors and then have those sensors trigger automations for whatever your trying to do. I now have my 4 aquariums monitored in home assistant with alerts to tell me if something is not right. That cost me under around $12usd for 2 boards, the jumpers and 4 sensors from Ali express. Just for fun I'm going to set one up with some LED lights on a solar controller with battery in my chicken coup so i can monitor the temp in there. Why? Because i can.

Great video, thanks! I’m planning to use this to get a window a/c to run cooler. I need a temp probe for ambient, and one up against the cooling fins to ensure they’re not cold enough to be icing over- your example is perfect. Last piece is applying heat to the a/c’s temp probe when I want it on, do you have any ideas or pointers for that? I’ve seen people use a lightbulb but figure there’s a more elegant solution using a resistor, just never attempted something like that before.
