NONE of the teams mentioned in this video even exists.
The microphone isn't bad, but there's too much bass in the audio, and you tend to slur your words a bit, which makes it kinda hard to understand. Good video otherwise, though. 😊
I think Numberfile described it well, metric isn't inherently beautiful. We came up with it simply because we had ten fingers. So really all the benefit comes from having a bunch of divisors. That's why a foot is useful. 1/3 is 4 inches, 1/4 is 3 inches, 1/6 is 2 inches. Doing the same with a meter is brutal. I think customary measurements are worse when looking at volumes. Cups, pints, and gallons are pretty arbitrary.
Agree with you regarding the handy divisibility of base 12 numbers. But cups, pints, and gallons aren't arbitrary. Quite the contrary -- each unit is exactly half of the previous unit. So... 1 gallon = 2 half gallons 1 half gallon = 2 quarts 1 quart = 2 pints 1 pint = 2 cups 1 cup = 8 fluid ounces 1/2 cup = 4 fluid ounces 1/4 cup = 2 fluid ounces
Terrible.

Darkie good.
No.
I'm an Imperial guy. But let's get real - when it matters, the USA chooses metric just like everyone else. We retain imperial for distances and gallons for our fuel and milk. Let's not forget, the base unit of the metric system is utterly arbitrary. There is no cosmic goodness from 9,192,631,770 vibrations of a cesium atom. And the "rest of the world uses metric" argument just wants an American to tell you to get stuffed. We don't care.
For length comparisons, metric and imperial are both based on arbitrary base sizes, so neither is superior in that regard. Imperial, however, is based upon units that are meaningful for humans. In that regard, it's superior if you're a human. Further, I could argue that Imperial provides more information. Miles, Yards, feet, inches... choose the one that makes the most sense for your intent. Metric has no such advantage. If you measure a distance as 1234 mm, and then convert it that to 1.234 meters or .001234 km, you gain no additional information. Conversely, the Imperial habit of dividing measurements by 2 to afford arbitrary levels of precision and is very practical for day-to-day living. Metric provides no such benefit. The math is harder sometimes, but not in an apples-to-apples comparison. Is 7/32 really harder than 0.21875? Imperial in the kitchen however is sort of a disaster. _Don't pack the flour, but do pack the brown sugar!_ I like metric when cooking, esp baking. But most measurements don't need to be precise, just consistent from day to day. The biggest controversy about metric is that the USA didn't drink the Kool-Aid when it didn't provide a benefit, and it makes the rest of the world crazy. Their fury is remarkable.
16 oz in a pound isn’t weird and pounds and ounces are often used together. The imperial system is all about fractions and powers of 2. Once you get that you will see how the conversion is convenient: 1/2 a pound is 8 ounces, 1/4 pound is 4 ounces, 1/8 is 2, etc. This makes calculating portions in your head easier when cooking, for example. Kids today are generally only taught to work with a decimal system of counting so other bases seem confusing to them, but in the past people learned to use multiple bases for different things, and understanding how to group numbers in more than one way makes the imperial system easier to understand and use, especially for keeping numbers in your head without writing them down-it’s easier to keep track of multiples and fractions than arbitrary decimal numbers without writing. Also, dozenal and hexadecimal systems are still used for certain applications, such as computing, and are not going to switch over to decimal anytime soon.
To get the US to convert to metric, all you need to change is gas to liters and speed limit to km per hour. Everyone is hesitant to change. It would take a couple years, mostly because it would take years to replace all the road signs
Metric all the way. Nice try.
Metric is the simplest and most effective system of measurement ever known and is used throughout the entire earth with the exception of three third-world countries - Liberia, Myanmar and the USA.
...and the USA. Sounds like you bet on the wrong horse.
@@tonyennis1787. The whole world is on the metric horse and it's doing just fine while America can't even spell words like metre and litre correctly. Interestingly, the metric system is as simple as your dollars and cent and far easier than the mental gymnastics required for your current archaic measurements.

_Y'know, The Imperial System Isn't That Bad_ - It's obsolete and irrelevant..
I thought this was a Star Wars video based on the title :D A defense of the Emperor kind of thing.
Some arguments derail into defending comparing things to, like, football fields or washing machines, which, as far as I know, are not US Customary units, but you blend those arguments in with those defending the US Customary system as though they were the same thing. Idk, it feels a little weird. Though, to be fair, a lot of metric users do that too, for cheap mockery. I just think this video would benefit from clearly separating the two, since I do think, as a metric user myself, that there IS a case to be made for those comparisons, and it would be much stronger than the one for US Customary. All in all, I don't disagree that "imperial" isn't THAT bad, and the mockery from metric users can get ridiculous. But metric is just better. A system of prefixes as multipliers that can be applied to every unit, turning conversions into a simple matter of moving the decimal point? Check. A system that just integrates every unit together in science in a very elegant way that makes calculations ridiculously easy? Check. The US should convert even if just for the fact that you would be using the exact same units for day-to-day life and for science, removing the need to learn a whole new system if you want to pursue a scientific career (because you would have already learned it), and also facilitating international communication (You can hear the many people around the world saying in unison: "What the fuck is a mile???"). Any actual defence of "imperial" as being better than metric falls into two categories: 1. Rationalisations of Americans just being used to US Customary ("Imperial are human sized units" Yeah because Europe is just constantly struggling to make-do with their Europoor units that aren't made for humans- Oh wait no they're fine) 2. Mathematical arguments that are inconsequential (If we really want, we could have thirds of meters; heck, we can create a whole new prefix for thirds to kill dozens of birds with a single stone... But then, you just have to wonder why, in 200+ years of SI history, has nobody really bothered creating such a prefix anyway) "Just adapt to the situation" is the opposite of a defence. If the US converted, their would be no adaptation needed in the first place. We don't have that kind of argument with Arabic numerals. We just... use them. Everywhere. (To be clear, this is not me arguing for cultural assimilation; I am only making this kind of argument for numbers and measurements, which I think heavily benefit from being a universal standard)
He's referring to American football fields as though they're the only type in the world, forgetting about the many other types of football fields all around the world.
When referring to "a football field away" it's commonly used in America to describe a long distance with a 100 yard field in a gridiron football game, it's a common thing in America to describe long distances and was a counterargument to a common issue people have with the American sayings as a larger part of the trend of visualization in our customary. Similarly, the washing machine reference like the football field is, while not being officially US Customary, by extension a term for measurement used informally.
@@chaotichistory875 Yeah, I understood that, and as I said, a lot of metric users will just put everything in the same basket too. I just think it would have been interesting to really separate this concept and the actual concept of US Customary, as they are distinct, and I feel like the former has more ground to stand on.
With all due respect, U.S. Customary units ARE more conveniently sized than metric ones. Centimeters are too small and meters are too large. Between those extremes, we have not one but TWO units - inches AND feet. That makes the measurement of human-scale objects very convenient. Likewise with grams vs. ounces and pounds. Grams are ridiculously small. A 14 ounce box of cereal is 397 grams! Which is a more convenient number to deal with - 14 or 397? Metric is obviously preferable for technical stuff - science and engineering and whatnot. But U.S. Customary is better for ordinary everyday practical use. And yes, dividing metric units by three or six results in a disaster. And you *_don’t_* have a word for a third of a meter - and you *_couldn’t,_* because there is no such thing. There is only a decimal approximation that goes on forever. And note that many, if not most, U.S. industries *_do_* use metric units. It’s just that the general public normally doesn't see it. It’s “behind the scenes”. Customary units are used in public discussions and at the retail level because that's what people are used to. That gives outsiders the incorrect impression that we *_only_* use Customary units, but that isn't true. (And even then, *_all_* consumer products have the metric size or weight equivalents marked on the packaging.) Bottom line: we in the U.S. are not as backwards as you like to think we are. To the contrary, we have developed a methodology that allows us to use whichever measurement system works best for the given circumstances. As a result, we enjoy the BEST OF BOTH WORLDS.
How quickly the double- and demi- for 2 and ½ are forgotten! Triple- and tiers- might work for 3 and ⅓, but before we get ahead of ourselves, what happened to double- and demi-?
There's also archaic terms you can revive to turn it into a power-of-2 system. 2 cups = 1 pint. 2 pints = 1 quart. 2 quarts = 1 pottle. 2 pottles = 1 gallon.
You really want to get a European bent out of shape? We measure out flour by cups (i.e. by volume, not mass) :D I've been reading a lot of older English authors, one or two centuries ago, and occasionally I do see them using furlongs for distances outside of horse racing. Although I did just read a story, "The Elemental" by Frank Belknap Long (American, not English), where indeed the story does start out at a race track and he does use the term furlong in the horse racing context. Not sure when it fell out of use, but sometimes in the past hundred years. Same for leagues, used to be more commonly used, now very rare, also probably dropped only in the past century or so. My guess would be once cars come along, that's probably when leagues gets dropped? You hear it a fair bit in regards to travel on horse-back, but literally never with cars. At the end of the day, the "best" system is whatever you grew up using. Most measuring systems (other than metric...) are designed to be useful to ordinary people doing ordinary tasks in their ordinary lives. The metric system is optimized for science and engineering. But very, very few people are scientists or engineers, and their units kind of suck for all other purposes. Well, liters are ok I guess, since 1 liter is nearly 1 quart, and that's a useful amount, as are milliliters, but for in between volumes? Who ever uses deciliters? No, you got liters and milliliters and that's it, so not ideal. Grams are worthlessly small, and kilograms (widely accepted by many metric users as the alternative base unit for mass) is just a little bit too big. When the Chinese adopted metric, they pegged their base unit of mass, the jīn, to exactly half a kilogram, which is fairly close to a pound, and a lot more practical for most people's purposes. Meters are fine for slightly longer distances, centimeters and millimeters for small distances, but those in between distances? Since nobody talks in terms of decimeters, they just have to use slightly large numbers for cm, or slightly small numbers of meters, and either is awkward. So for those people who grow up using metric and are not scientists and engineers, i.e. the overwhelming majority of them, they kind of got screwed out of a system that is optimized for everyday utility. Sure, the system can be, and is, used for everyday purposes, but it's not great.
How long is the edge of a pint cube? Be as precise as you can in whatever units you want. How long if it is a litter cube or a gallon? Everyday utility question. How many bites were used on your comment? Do you need to convert the unit or just add a letter to make it 1000 times bigger or smaller? How awkward is it for you using such a small unit?
@@JoaoManuelCanelas You completely missed the main point from the video, as well as the post you replied to. Why would someone ever try to or want to make a "pint cube"? When was the last time you set out to make a cube that held a specific volume, and is it something you do regularly? For the second question, I don't believe there's a metric version of bits/bytes, so everyone is stuck converting from base 8 there. These units also make a lot more sense than any base10 unit would, since they are describing a binary number and not an arbitrary measurement of something.
I agree that it doesn't *really* matter, but still believe we should work to switch to metric. I will set aside the fact that all US units are legally defined as factors of metric units (because metric units are actually *mostly* based on universal constants). Let us start with length and mass/weight. Metric allows me to properly divide units so that I can be precise. You have the inch and that divides into... fractions of an inch. The pound divides into 16 ounces which divide into... fractions of ounces. In metric, I can say 10 grams. I can divide further into milli, micro, and nano. This is why the pharmecutical industry uses metric. Other common applications include weighing gold, chemistry, and cocain. Okay, but what about scaling up? What is longer than a mile? Heavier than a short-ton? In metric, I can scale the prefixes so that I am always working with managable numbers (0 - 999). Customary just creates new units at arbitrary points (see Therms). I am an engineer and metric is much easier to work with and offers more generalized definitions. 1 Watt = 1 Joule / second 1 Joule = (1 Newton * 1 meter) 1 Newton = (1 kg * 1 meter) /s^2 Where: Watt (power) = How much energy was transfered in some time? Joule (energy/work) = Over what distance was some force applied? Newton (force) = How much is some mass accelerating? Easy. The you have nice units like Culombs and Amps. Lets try that in customary: Power - > Horsepower HP = (Torque * RPM) / 5252 Ignoring the annoyong constant, we continue. Energy = kilowatt / hour Notice that we are back at metric. The US mostly uses metric for energy. Why? Because here are the following units of energy in the customary system: Foot-pound force British Thermal Units Horsepower-hour Therms (which is just 100000 BTUs) My personal favorite, "gassoline gallon equivilent". The "best" of these is the BTU. Defined as the energy to raise 1 pound (a weight that cannot be defined without metric) of water by 1 degree Fahrenheight. These are stupid units of measure. Metric solves the problems of quantifying mechanical, electrical, and thermal power with a single unit. The Watt. And I can derive all other useful quantities (energy, force) from it. This is not the case for the US customary system. There is an exception case with calories/Calories, but this comment is long enough. Could I make customaty work? Probably. Will it require several arbitrary constants? Yes. Would it be easier to just use metric? Absolutely. So then, how about force? The pound. Well... what is a pound? I still cannot find the answer to this. There is something about it being initally equal to 7000 grains. What are those? No one knows for sure because every country defined them differently. The base of most customary units needs to be defined in metric. Does any of this truely matter to the average person? No. Are there much more important things that we as a society should focus on? Yes. But I will always think of the customary system as a joke and advocate against it. I haven't even mentioned pressure, luminous intensity, and atomic measurments. If you read this far, thank you. I wish you a happy New Year.
All of this on the internet, wasting millions of bites. Can you please intercede to stop measuring miles per gallon MPG because its too logarithmic and invert the relation to gallons or pints (or what ever volume unit) per mile. Americans may not want to change it all, but at least change for better of themselves. This way of present consumption is design to obstruct information. If Americans could see how many more miles they could drive with a gallon of gasoline, they wouldn't by those thirsty trucks.
the suggestion that a thousandth of an inch is not used is hilarious, it's very much still used
For some reason, thousands of an inch seems to work better than metric too. The numbers in Machinery's Handbook are pretty solid for thousandths of an inch.
Your microphone sounds great but try to enunciate more. Speaking at .9x your current speed would do wonders for your comprehensibility.
YES! THIS! 👍
As stated, the metricphiles and celciupaths like to point out is how everything is a factor of 10. The definition of the meter used to be a fraction of the Earth's circumference that was divisible by 10. However that ended up causing the hellish speed of light definition of 299,792,458 m/s. Thus, the definition of meter changed to the distance light travels in a vacuum in 1/299,792,458 of a second, or 3.33ns. It is commonly rounded to 300,000,000 m/s, so if the meter is now defined by the speed of light, why not base the definition of meter on a more rounded speed of light if the metric system is so "logical?" After all, the speed of light is more universal than the circumference of the Earth. Now if you take the current speed of light in terms of feet per second, that comes out to 983,571,056 ft/s. So, the time it takes light to travel 1 foot becomes 1.02 ns, which is far closer to a number that is evenly divisible by 10. Thus it makes more sense for the foot to be the standard unit of measurement, as opposed to the meter, if you want your units of measurement to relate to the number 10.
The Jefferson decimal system foot is just under 1 light-nanosecond. 0.9956 light-ns or so. Yep, our decimal money had a whole decimal weights and measures system attached to it.
Thank you for this, though you barely touched on the fact that the single unit up/down conversions are often highly composite, and thus make common unit conversations like "quarter of a pound" or "a third of a foot" quite easy to do without introducing any decimals
yes, it is
Imperial are human sized units. Metric for all science.
As someone who lives in a metric country, I am constantly frustrated by the fact metric is not human-sized. It's such a hassle in day-to-day life. (/s)

What is the length of edge of a pint cube? Be as precise as you can in whatever units you want.
I would rather there not be a choice. -- nobody.
1 mile = 5280'. 1 kilometer = 3280'!!
*3280 320/381′ = 3280′ 10 10/127″
5280 is not arbitrary. It can be factored to 48 divisors. 1,000,000 can be divided by 49 divisors.
*Exactly.* Everybody loves to slam our use of miles, but the fact that miles can be evenly divided in a zillion different ways is very convenient.
It's 4800+480, or 11*480, lots of factors! Where did the 11 come from? Part of the history of the system, when switching from the old Saxon foot, a mile got 10% more feet, same distance on the road, though, just more divisions.
I couldn't care less about 10. Mathematically is is not an interesting number.
Its trivial to mentally compute.
"thou is a thousandth of an inch, so you just know it's not used" He said about one of the few imperial units I have actually personally used, lol (It's a common unit for circuit board design) As long as you are staying within the same unit, any measurement system works well enough. But the fact that you need to get out a calculator to convert between units of the same dimension, in the same measurement system, is just terrible. Sure, it's not common that you need to convert miles to inches, but it's not like that never happens. If you building a road or something, and you need to place something every so often - the road length will be in miles, and the distance between the things you place... I don't know, inches, yards, whatever. Not miles. Plus, basically the entire rest of the world uses metric.
My point was largely that it was used situationally and not in broader average use (walking down the sidewalk, need a thou) like the nautical mile was, but love the input!
_"Sure, it's not common that you need to convert miles to inches, but it's not like that never happens."_ No, it never happens. Even in the example you gave, the distance between markers would be in feet, not inches or yards (which no one ever uses outside of football or golf). Furthermore, because there are 5280 feet in a mile, that mile can be conveniently divided up in any of a large number of ways. You want a marker every tenth of a mile? Just put one in every 528 feet. Every twentieth of a mile? Every 264 feet. You want to install sixteen markers per mile? Every 330 feet. 15 markers? That's every 352 feet. How about every third or sixth of a mile? That would be every 1760 or 880 feet, respectively. Exactly. No inches. Easy peasy. But if you want to divide a kilometer by three or six, you'll get 333.3333333333... meters or 166.66666666666... meters. 15 markers per kilometer? That would be every 66.6666666666... meters. Yuck!
while the US calls it "the imperial system" it is actually the US short imperial. as the imperial system changed after the US became the US and the US didn't update its imperial system when the UK did, which is now known as the long. but what is funny, US imperial is actually metric now and is defined in metric units.
The metric system is dominating the whole planet, save a few holdouts. Why is it not considered a metric empire? The "imperial" system has no where near the influence. Pretty pathetic empire of measurement units if you ask me.
Indeed, 1826 was the fork in the road where the British and American systems diverged. It was just too soon after the War of 1812 for the US to accept giving up the English (or Winchester) based system in order to conform with a new, London-devised, Imperial System.
What is 3 tons, 6 cwt, 3 quarters,1stone, 11 lbs 3oz divided by 9 cwt, 1quater, 4 lbs and 1 oz? I'll stick by metric. By the way, europe has a wonderful football culture.
Interesting! I didn't even mention hundredweight in the video (if you watched it) but I'm not sure what a quater is in this "gotcha." And I enjoy European football too. Cheers! ❤️
That's a ridiculous hypothetical. First, *nobody* in the U.S. uses hundredweights. That's an ancient unit that nobody uses. We don't use stones, either. Second, nobody divides a weight by another weight. That makes no sense at all. Bottom line: we use Customary units for measuring things, not for complex calculations. We use Customary units to buy groceries, to put gasoline in our cars, to measure distances and sizes of human-scale objects, etc. That's it. And it works -- better than metric, in fact -- because those units are conveniently sized for those purposes. We don't use Customary units to do science and engineering. That's not what those units are for. Each system has its benefits and drawbacks. Here in the U.S., we have the advantage of using whichever one works best for the given situation.
@@Milesco Dividing one weight by another is a common operation. It is how you decide how many pallets you can put on a truck, for example. It appears that you have so much trouble with imperial units that you have dropped some of them already. Make your lives easier and give up the rest too.
@@petertromans5599 Then you're really just dividing one number by another. For what you're describing, we just use pounds. Period. 80,000 lbs on the truck, divided by say, 3,000 lbs per pallet, equals 26.67 pallets. (Round down to 26.) That's hardly difficult. No tons needed, let alone these other imaginary units you've made up (or that no one uses). You're just setting up a strawman argument.
I wouldn't agree that it is a strawman argument. We went through the change to using pounds and inches and dropping the rest of the odd units about sixty years ago in engineering, and then changed to metric about fifty years ago. Other professions followed, with food retailing about thirty years ago. The moaners predicted it would cause chaos, but in fact it was very smooth. You feel comfortable with imperial because you are used to it, but you will soon get even more comfortable with metric. Sticking as the only country using imperial makes you look a bit antediluvian. I get the impression that your industry uses metric a lot anyway. American companies happily send quotes, tenders and invoices in metric, and in sensible metric numbers, suggesting that they are not conversions from imperial. This comment is getting too long, so I'm just off to the pub for a quick 568 ml.

She/They spotted, opinion based by default
Yeah, I find the best way to deal with these people is to kinda turn it on them, I have a friend who'd always go on about how life sucks, I spent ages trying to convince her to me more optimistic but she'd always have a million excuses and copes, so one day I just started going "Haha wow, your life really does suck, that's so sad" and I noticed it kinda deflates the pesimism
