Curious if you assign numbers to the bands, when in number 1-99, do you only put the single digit band or double digit band or do for those numbers do you fill in the blanks with "0" bands so each bird always has 3 numbers? Meaning a number 7 bird would actually be "007" on the bird or "25" would be "025" ?
Karen- is there somewhere I could download the spreadsheets to use/modify for my own uses? Right now I am handwriting everything and it gets very tedious when I have to start a new sheet 😂
@ 54:00 or about there when Karen talked about the "invisible" front number and reusing the numbers that way- how do you know what generation each bird is by the bands?
I had a number of young birds with pinched tails this year. I waited on them and as they matured, for the most part, they did not improve, and were culled. But seeing it wrong is educational, so I am now selecting more fullness in the tail area, while still maintaining the distinct transition from back to tail that the standard calls for.
Nice video Karen. Thank you!
I have Seramas witch are very small how would this translate?
Okay- wait a minute - when a bird gets sick and survives it- that birds DNA literally writes immunity into it which should pass to any offspring. I don't agree that using birds that have gotten sick is a bad thing.
Natural immunity takes years to develop. It means that a bird's immune system has developed to give it the ability to deal with diseases without medical intervention in many cases. This is how chickens have survived in the wild for thousands of years.
Do the zip ties not switch order ever? I was just thinking if you use them to assign number what if they get out of order they were originally put on in? Say it's number 135 originally but ties move and now it reads 513?
What is the risk of infection with the toe punch? Chicks are walking on feces? Can you provide a link for where to find strechy leg bands that actually stau on and what sizes i would need for newborn on up please?
I have toe-punched literally thousands of day-old chicks in the 60+ years of raising standard-bred poultry and never had any problems with toe-punches becoming infected. I'm sorry but I can't help you with those leg bands because I have never used them.
@@goldstandardpoultrysolutio9223 I am a very new breeder and am quickly realizing I need a system of records and organizing. Lol. They just get too hard to track if you don't id them and then once everyone is mature if you have the same breeds then there is no way of knowing who is 3, 2, or 5 yrs old. I'm trying to figure out what I need to track and then how I am going to organize that system. So far I'm thinking I will assign a color to each breed I keep, that band will either go on the left or right depending on what sex it is (I want to band birds I believe are males early to refine my sexing process and know later whether I was correct or not) then for everything else I'm thinking a number assigned to them that will correspond to a record book to keep all detailed information on them. I would also like to track age easily and what generation a bird is within their family tree. I like the idea of the beads on the zip ties, and am thinking that for an F 1 bird it would get a clean tie in the color assigned to their breed. An f2 would get one bead of the same color on the tie, a f3 would have two beads. Or maybe assign numbers to the beads and then use the beads to track generations. I think something to track the pen they belong in might be nice as well. I don't know. It has a lot of moving parts And I have quite a bit to think about and design into a working system for my farm
This is some great info right here thank you this is how my great grandma taught me
Very nice video. A lot of useful information. Thank you
Does furtrell ship to canada?
Where can I buy his books
I did not enjoy my white leghorns, too nervous. I like my Partridge Chanteclers, very sociable.
I'm not particularly fond of leghorns either. Too flighty and not friendly enough.
Is there a place to go to see this information on paper? Like amino levels and percentages. Would like to see it so that I can see if I can get something better for my show birds. Great information though. It’s hard to find someone talking about these things especially in show birds. Trying to get my barred rocks as quality as possible.
How to feed meats cooked or raw
Keep your chick feed fresh. Don't use last years feed!
I like the old timer idea of keeping an eye on the chicks.
Thank you!
I have noted that my crosses of two lines are more active, almost too active. But, they settle down with good handling.
Thank you!
Send a man to the moon is easy but haven a on line poultry talk show is tricky!
I should add that in spite of reading over the standard for my breed many times, I have a mentor who is very successful at showing our breed, and he helps me unpack and understand the written words of the standard. He also understands the points system used in judging, and on that basis is helping me with selection of my new breeders every year. I hope to show a few of my birds in 2023. I might not win, but I will learn a lot.
This part! 35:54
Finally, a use for all the extra (deliberately mismatched ) steel roof panels , the manufacturers use to protect the top and bottom of the bundle during shipping!
I think there is a standardized color code for Marans in France. I think it is kept by the breed group. I have seen it.
That is egg color
As far as frequency of use came from these shows as well.
I started a less detailed sheet this year. Most of my observable data came from your shows here. I changed it every time I used it. For me, I expect I will continue to develop it over time.
Wow, Thank you
Very Interesting coops Clean and efficiency is the name of the game thank you for sharing
Good Culling is a must to be successful!!
I want to try one out
I love these coops.
Thank you Sooo much for this interview. My grandfather used to use these remedies on his farm. 75 years of what is now considered beyond organic layers and broilers. He just called it farm stock care. They of course grew their own feed their own seed. The mid century model has crippled stock farmers. We are now growing our own feed and designing our own. 🌞🌱❤️. Do you have a link to Jeff’s layer and meatbird supplement?
Your alive! I thought something happened to you because you guys had not posted since Jun.
What about ducks? I have two Rouen show birds. Very big pair. I plan to breed them this coming spring. So what should I plan to feed them?
Kathy I don't know what brands of feed you have available in your area so here's my suggestion. Several different manufacturer produce waterfowl feeds, so look to see if you have one available in your area. If you can't find a feed specifically made for waterfowl look for a feed made for mixed flocks. These are typically suitable for a variety of species like chickens, turkeys, waterfowl, etc. and names like "All Flock" or something similar. Since you plan on breed your ducks I would suggest you consider a feed supplement that provides supplemental vitamins, minerals and amino acids. The one I use and recommend is Fertrell's Show Bird and Breeder Supplement. It really helps with fertility and hatchability and helps produce strong vigorous chicks. You can oder it online directly from the Fertrell Company at www.Fertrell.com.
@@goldstandardpoultrysolutio9223 thank you. i have the breeder supp on its way.
How many books he have written and where to buy them at ?
Didn't realize there were so many ways to ID chickens. Thanks for talking about them.
Rip, you should sell your audio tape of show sounds. . LOL
What type of vinegar?
Do you have layer poultry farming Excel sheet
We're extremely fortunate to have Mandelyn in our Bresse community!!!
The bulk discount is the only why I can keep my birds without breaking the bank. I wish I could buy less of it more often.
Hi just watched this episode .I use a digital poultry scale (sling) .I purchased off of ebay about a month ago.
Could you guys please do a video on starting a breeding flock?
I plan to be visiting with Karen in a few weeks and we'll do one then, so keep watching.
I'm just gettin into raising gamefoul. What do you recommend I get for feef

Hi Jeff for how long we can feed probiotics to chickens and how much thanks
Amazing information! I can't believe how much I've learned! Thank you so much!
Sky, I'm glad you find these videos helpful.
Awesome video Rip. Great lesson.
Thanks Kenny! I hope you and your family have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
REally good info! I've always evaluated my Marans and other birds by the Hogan method and this is pretty similar but I don't remember ever hearing that the length of keel should equal the width of the shoulders; I'll have to remember to check that out. Do you think that most of these rules would be applicable to standard bred dual purpose birds? Where you want young cockerals to grow and fill out fast for the table
