I wonder if there is a gameplay difference between letting them retreat or taking every possible enemy life when you have the blatant power to do so no matter your decision. Will retreated enemies change enemy lords behavior or tactics against you? Say they are cautious and attacking put of necessity if you overpowered them too strongly they will back off when someone reports the power imbalance but if no one survives they might just send bigger and stronger armies at you assuming you just barely won and are still weak.

Total War has the problem of obscenely high attrition on the front line. In real life the vast majority of people who got killed it was during the route. In Total War it's not uncommon for even the winning army to have lost 80%+ of its number.

From what I've seen this game has some of the better battlefield attrition rates in any game. Most people want the high action things, but the best stuff often comes from decisive victories with a relative lack of blood.
