My 6/7 month update review of the Raleight Stride 2. I've covered the UK winter and share what I have learnt.
Something are not specific to the bike but can apply to other cargo bikes and approaches to riding them
Range I quote was based on Sport mode
Any questions please ask.

Raleigh Stride 2 - verbal talk through of removing rear wheel
Переглядів 231Рік тому
Firstly apologies for the rotation. I thought I could fix in YT. This is a massive and involved process. I talk through the steps I take to get the rear wheel out. This is not a roadside type repair and you should set a couple of hours as side for removal / refitting. If you have any questions please let me know. I'm sharing as it might help someone.
Rayleigh Stride 2 - rear tyre upgrade

A quick talk of the points to consider if you choose to upgrade the rear tyre to a wider width. I do definately recommend the upgrade, but you need to budget for new wheel lock and be adept at looking after the bike as tolerances are tight.
Raleigh Stride 2 - upgrade rear rotor 180 mm talk through
Переглядів 72Рік тому
A talk through of the points to consider if you choose to update the stock rear 160 mm rotor to a 180 mm. I was surprised the bike was designed with 160 in mind so had planned to upgrade to 180 mm. This was a more involved process that I expected. See other video regarding removing the rear wheel. You will also need to a new brake mount to provide clearance and some fettling also.

When researching this bike I struggled to find any reviews that were not just press releases or news articales from press releases. These are my initial thoughts on the bike which I hope help inform other potential buyers. If you have any specific question please let me know and I'll try my best to answer them. Just another note which I forgot to mention. On the downtube if you use both bottle m...
Hello, you kindly shared the parts for the front upgrade which I've purchased. Can you please also share the parts you used for the rear brake upgrade? Have you changed the pads too? If so which did you go for? Many thanks.
@@SamWalker-ok6ld I used the same disc model as upgraded for the front. What I ended up doing was dremel the plate that connects the brake mount to the frame so it could slide left most on to give clearance for the disc. I replaced the pads with the same type. I've specifically avoided talking about it because of warrenty etc. It was the mod I went with.
@@steverhysjenks thanks, were you able to use the same magura adaptor too?
@@SamWalker-ok6ld I used the original mount yes.
Hello Stephen, thanks for your videos. I've done about 300 miles on mine now around the Stroud Hills. Fast decent causes a speed wobble which I had under control for weeks, then it happened again this morning with two kids on board (!). Can you please share details of your front brake upgrade to the 180mm? Thank you PS my previous comment about the mudguard issue - one of the supports was installed upside down from the factory, all sorted now.
I used the following parts: Magura QM12 180mm IS to PM Adapter and Magura MDR-C Disc Brake Rotor 180mm.
Not the 180mm won't stop wobble. Jusrt remember your on a much heavier bike. I find I use hell alot more rear brake and using both brakes together.
@@steverhysjenks thank you so much. Yes I understand this won't fix the wobble but will give a bit more confidence in the front. I have found that keeping the bike around 15mph on the steepest descents means we don't wobble... drivers behind don't like it much though! Thanks again😁
Hi, I just bought this bike and don't know how to turn on the lamp. The bike shop didn't know either. Does anyone know how it is done?
With the bike turned on. Press the power button and quickly afterwards (1 sec) press and hold for a couple of sections. The button should turn yellow - lights on. Same again to turn off. Need to get the timing right or you'll turn your bike off
Hi iam 161cm tall would i struggle with this bike thax alex
I have recently found you can get double ended inner tube (Gaadi Double Ended Schrader Valve Inner Tube). For a roadside repair this is ideal, cut out the old tube and put this in without the need to remove the wheel. It was about a £10 in the UK. This is strictly a roadside / get me home solution. The issue I have is that when I have had a puncture (that season again), I've got the kids so I don't have the time to wait for a patch to properly glue, in my rush the patch failes (5-10 mins afterwards) the patch fails when pumping the inner tube.
Thanks for the video. We’ve ordered ours and we can’t wait! We can’t afford the others eg urban arrow/Reese and muller, so good to get some knowledge before it arrives!
How have you found it? I'm thinking of ordering one and would like to get a recent update from a new purchaser?
Thanks for the video. I hope I don’t need it!!!
Hi there, nice review! I m thinking of buying one, but still doubt about the range. You mentioned about 30miles, what's battery package you have? 300w battery? Thank
Thanks for making the video- I’ve got one on order at the moment and really interesting to hear someone else’s experience owning it. Do you know if southsea cycles meant the stride 3 extra bench would fit in the front of the stride 2 or would it have to be a diy extra bench? Looking at stride 3 box the front seems a good but wider than the 2.
Thery were not clear. Saying that I removed the bench to clean and dry fitted it to the front and it fits. To me it will be a second stride 2 bench.
Hi, just bought this bike second hand, could you tell me how long you charge the bike for ? Had the orange ring come up. Tia.
About 3-4 hrs from near flat. Orange is between 25-50%
@@steverhysjenks Ok many thanks, I didn't get any info on the bike, so still learning about it 👍
That's quite extreme - does it use any sealant in case you get a puncture or are you stuck if you get one?
No sealent as stock. You could swap it out for a slim inner tube (inner tube with sealent). I'll still do that when I have to change the rear.
@@steverhysjenks Thanks, mine is coming tomorrow, looking forward.. thanks for the videos very helpful
Thank you very much. I am planing to buy a cargo bike and your video helped a lot to know more about this bike.
Glad it could help. Did you decided to get one?
@@steverhysjenks I have ordered Batavus fier 2. It is the same bike from Raleigh's sister company.
The close holes are for the range extender
Have you had to do any hills with the bike? I have some serious ones around so want to make sure anything I get can handle them with the kids.
To be honest not really other than the odd humpback bridge. All I would say is manage your gears. Just spin and take your time.
I HAVE THIS BIKE, ABERDEEN, SCOTLAND. IT IS POWERFUL BUT WITH CHILDREN OR WEIGHT IT WILL BE DIFFICULT ON 90º TYPE CLAMPS OR ANY VERY STEEP CLIMB. IS A HEAVY WHALE
Weight is not a problem with tubeless tyres but the wheelset could be as not all wheels are compatible with tubeless tyres, you would need to check. Schwalbe Marathon Plus MTB tyres have a different tread to other Marathon plus tyres. Puncture protection and strength is highest on the e-Marathon Plus range (designed for e-bikes). A wide cassette range (especially the biggest cog) allows for more efficient use of the motor too
You prob need to add rim tape as well
Can’t go wrong with schwalbe tyres . Just had my first puncture after 2500 miles.
Thanks for the update. I've had mine for about a year but with similar mileage to you. Agree on all your points with the rain tent and the food/random debris getting stuck around the side of the floor. I had a bit of a problem with my lower back in the upright/dutch-style seating position so I changed to a spongier saddle with thudbuster seatpost. The only problem with that is that it now makes the saddle a bit too high for my wife to ride as she has shorter legs. Not much that can be done with the design but it suits me perfectly. The bike really doesn't lend itself to those with shorter legs though. Had a service recently and got the pads changed. I found cycling through winter, it really started to clog up in the disk brakes/pads but I suppose that's more of an issue with disk brakes in general. Annoyingly there were roadworks around my area which forced me to use some short dirt tracks leading to the clogging. Once I got the bike back, the front wheel was groaning a bit, but a quick release and re-tightening of the wheel sorted it. I also found that with wet leaves, it loses traction easily, I'll try lowering the pressure next autumn for those reasons though probably would be more prone to puncturing. Would be useful to see how you changed out the rear wheel though. I'm dreading the day I get a puncture in the middle of nowhere in the rear wheel especially. The front is obviously very easy to change/work on since it floats with the stand down. All in all, it is a smashing piece of machinery. No issue with range, the motor is fantastic and the ride is really comfortable for me and for the kids in the front. I did happen to run into supply issues with the rain tent as there was a general recall on the previous batch due to the design. I ordered mine end of April 2022 and received it in December but it looks like the supply chain has since been sorted. :edit: just seen you have uploaded the rear wheel vid. Great stuff 👍
Glad your loving the bike...... yeah rear wheel - its a job I hope the video helps.
Thanks for the update. Really interesting stuff and it's clear that you're still happy with your purchase. I'm considering purchasing one but on my test ride the bike had a serious speed wobble. Have you had any issues with that (particularly going downhill)?
I experienced this once and only once, have now since about 1600 miles. I think the reason was going a bit fast downhill with load in the front (6 year old kid) and applying more pressure to the front brake compared to the rear brake. It got that wobble which was resolved by slowing right down to about 1-2mph but I did find it a bit disconcerting. Knowing that you should apply pressure to front and rear brakes more evenly, even with a little bit more pressure on the rear brakes, I've never had a re-occurrence of the front wheel wobble. If I have the front bay loaded with kids/shopping, I just take my time going down hill. Otherwise, with no load, I've had no wobble issues even hitting upwards of 25mph.
I agree with Chris here, not experienced it myself, but you have to adjust your style of breaking prob 60/40% rear/front and in wet I would say 80/20% rear/front
Thanks for the replies. Always good to hear other people's experiences.
Hello. I found a really good video explaining speed wobble on an urban arrow. These bikes have two headsets. One on the bars and one on the front wheel. Usually just tighten them both and bob's your father's brother.
@@diplodicai1thanks! Managed to get it sorted 👍🏻
For those who are interested - I will be doing a follow up 6 month video soon.
Hello there. Nice review bud. I want to get one of these and I too have a 3d printer. Is there any chance you have posted the files to somewhere like printables? They look like excellent upgrades.
I use this one for the battery mount and charge indoors: www.thingiverse.com/thing:4644295 This is what I used for the gopro style mounts: www.thingiverse.com/thing:62800 - use the customiser to tweak as you need. I then used tinkercad to knock up a bit of bar with go-pro mount.
Thank you very much chap.
By the way, the bike appears to be sold elsewhere as the Batavus Fier 2. Raleigh is now owned by the Dutch. Might make it easier to get the extra bench or rain tent.
Looks like a hardtail hybrid full steel ~18-19kg. I expect saddle pain.
Gearing - if you want lower gears is it straightforward to swap the chainring? I've got a 42 chainring on the Espeeder 200, but only 11-36 cassette (largest the Alivio rear derailleur will go up to). Yours is an 11-46 I believe. I could do with a 'mid-gear' chainring like a 36, cos there's some bleddy steep hills where I live (Devon) and I'm having to really grind up them. Not sure that's good for the motor . . . or me!
Nice review thanks. I've just ordered the 200. Did you find out what tool you need to remove the rear wheel thru axel? Is it just a BIG allen key? Also, did you experiment with the tyre pressures to get a smoother ride on rougher surfaces? Cheers - happy riding!
It's not a thru axle but yes a big Allen key. Pressures I've not played with for off road as I mainly use this on road for commuting.
@@steverhysjenks Thanks for the reply. Yes I found an allen key that fitted (8mm). Love the bike but need a smaller chainring.
My parent s riese &muller ebike has the same e equipment and i had the same issues with the twist grip and handle bar… Like you, i m interested in this cargo bike with 180 disc and was wondering about knobblier tyres, may be continental dual fighter or some e gravel tyres as I have to ride on damp gravels up hill with limited traction… So, how difficult is it to balance? And when you get to a traffic light, is it heavy to hold.
Only last week I swapped out the front for a 180. After the pads rebedded I've noted a good difference. I'll be doing the same to the back. If you lean the bike over yeah its heavy. In light traffic it's OK, its not as nibble as a normal bike but it's fine for me.
I don't understand why most bikes these days only have a single chainwheel. The bikes of my youth had two or three thus hugely increasing the range of gears.
It was Pro 2/3 x 6/7 gears, your looking at 10 > 12 gears on the back end. So a 1 x 12 I would argue is better than 2x6 or 7. You don't get gear overlap. No front durailuer. Just my thoughts.
Having one chainring with a wide gear range has become possible with the advent of groupsets that will allow a rear cassette with a wide range eg 11-52. One chain ring at the front means easier changing (only one hand to worry about and one less thing to go wrong!). I have 4 different bikes with a single chain ring and none of them have the chain drop problem described here.
Thanks for shairing your impressions. Question: Can you tell me the diameter of the seat post tube?
According to the specs its: 30.9mm, also note the steerer is larger than the usual 29 iirc
Hey Stephen, Thanks for your review after a couple of months. I really enjoyed watching it! Will you do another one or how would you summerize your experience with the espeeder?
Your the first to ask for a further one. I'm 1500 miles on this bike since Aug '21. I'll see what I can do.
Tanks for good video! But how did you manage to fit the carriage mount to the rear axle? I have an Espeeder and a Thule carriage, so would very much like to know how you did it :)
I used a dremel to make the circle larger. Right..... Before you do that get some sleeve to put over the thread where the attachment will go. The attachment will wear the threads so you need to protect it. Also if you have a grinder. Grind the face of the attachment so it will allow the nut more thread to hold on to.
@@steverhysjenks Okey, thanks! Hopefully I will manage to replicate your success :)
Very pleased with the eSpeeder 400. The saddle post does go high enough and I thought you’d be amused about where I mounted my water bottle! (Lower bracket)
The bottle mounts you said were 'pointless' aren't bottle mounts. They are mounts for a spare battery.
doing 40 miles/week you dont need assistance
So good
Thanks for the vid. I have the 200 model, and the dropped chain is a problem for me also.I changed the chain set to a Shimano Alfine 39, and the chain at the same time, problem solved. And the gearing is better with a 39 front cog too.
I managed to break the chain 10 miles from home. That’s when I discovered that the bike could self drive and I managed about 9 miles without pedalling before the battery went flat. I’ve had the chain fixed now but can’t for the life of me figure out how to put the bike into no pedalling mode. Any idea?
This is the first I've heard of no pedalling mode - I know about free wheeling...... let us know if you do find out.
Great review! Thanks for doing this. I've been owning a similar bike for a month now. I use it to commute carrying a large backpack and only once the chain disengaged out of my own clumsiness. Could you add the link to the action camera mount and adapter for the light? Also for the brake pads you're using now. I agree the standard light mount isn't great if I want to change the light's height. I haven't had any issues with gearing but again I don't tow anything.
Hi, I've added links to the items I used in the description box. I would suggest looking for a metal action camera mount. But now you know what your looking for its easily searchable.
Really useful review Stephen, thank you. Just about to get one myself and at 6’6” I went for the XL and have been assured it will be large enough, but is there a good length of saddle post extension? Thanks
I'll be honest I don't know purely because I've had need to completely remove it.
Thanks for the review. I also am having issues with the chai. Coming off front COG, spoke to supplier and will look at. It is a pain 4 times on 14 mile cycle. Not good, also had issues with light, come on ole for few seconds then go off,
Wow. sounds like you pretty much bought the wrong bike. Try the Orbea or Specialized if you want a bike that has near perfection I do appreciate you steering me away from this bike though.
I wouldn't say its the wrong bike. Its the right bike I need for my needs and what was available at the time. I look at it as a run-around car not my weekend car.
I've done a 3 month update it's on my channel
Thanks for sharing your experience
My pleasure
good honest review. after a month how is it?
I'll do a 3 month review
have mine now a week and I am very happy with the bike. it cycles well without any power.
You do notice the additional weight though, do you find that?
Picked mine up today. How do you turn on the lights
I struggled with this at first. Rather than do the quick press to change the assistance level. Hold for 3 seconds and the colour should flash yellow to turn lights on/off.
Once you’ve turned the bike on Press the button twice till it flashes, then push and hold the button. your welcome.
I can't wait to pick up mine , ordered this bike last week.. thank you for the review this is literally the only one for this bike so far... Next upload of a ride please
I plan to do a 3 month review as I'm clocking 40 - 50 miles a week on it.
