Wing Commander II Special Operations 2 Eject% Speedrun (23:59)
And this is third and final video for today, completing the series of Wing Commander II and expansions. Compared to the previous two games (WCII and SO1,) this feels like a cakewalk in comparison. But it's still a great way to end this chapter of the WC story and prepare us for the shift into FMV with Mark Hamill for Wing Commander III :3
When I have more time, I'd love to provide voiceover explanations for some of the choices and rough moments, but when trying to go as fast as possible it's a bit hard to concentrate on commentary.
If you'd be interested in watching these, and letting the cutscenes play out - that might be a good way to slow down a bit and explain details of the game while still showing some speedrun techniques. Let me know if you'd like to see that!
Thanks for watching and reading :3

Karus again, this is the second of my video uploads today! This one I'm especially proud of. Special Ops 1 has a killer final mission against 2 Fralthras. I really have no idea how you are supposed to complete this mission normally. I've heard things like...fly between them, and they'll shoot each other with antimatter...try *very* careful torpedo runs. In either case, I've never actually finis...

Karus here! It's been awhile since I've gotten to upload anything, been quite busy with university. But, to celebrate some new awesome Wing Commander artwork from DWC Marshal Arts (@/Infurnationale on Twitter) featuring Duffin and I together in the setting, today I'll be uploading THREE videos - WCII, Special Ops 1, and Special Ops 2, all featuring a new(ish?) glitch that saves an incredible am...

Woof. This is one of the hardest games I've ever played. It's not even a particularly fair kind of difficult, either. The final mission(s) of this game are brutally unforgiving compared to anything that came before them. Most of the Wing Commander community appears to agree that this expansion needed a lot more playtesting, but rushed development cycles aren't exclusive to modern times. I only ...

(Obsoleted by MasterCactaur on Speedrun.com - check out his run!) For some reason, this recording did not capture game audio at *ALL* so my husband, editor, and mate jumped in to add some (free) chill background music. Realized there's absolutely no way for my mouth to move as fast as my brain does for a speedrun of this series, so at some point I'll have to do a "slow" speedrun to just explain...

Karus here, making some more speedrunning history with a game that's never had a run before! :3 Since WCII has never had a run, this was the fastest route I could find, and I tried to only complete what was absolutely necessary. The execution of the route could be improved as it's definitely possible to take less hits, but happy with this for the first demonstration. I'd be excited if anyone el...

Well, it's been a year since I've tried running anything - but I've really wanted to get back into space. Wing Commander is an awesome series from my childhood I'm excited to run, and hopefully improve my time on. Next - I plan to run the 'bad' ending, and maybe even try WC2 or Privateer if schedule allows.

I didn't talk this video, as the game can be a bit of a slog and there wasn't much to say. I doubt I'm coming back to play any time soon. Good for what it was, but hasn't aged as well as MW2: 31st Century Combat or MW2: Mercs. The first bit of the video is playing through the story. This is a rough cut of a session attempting to perfect the time required to sink all 4 target ships during the practice mode. I experiment slightly with the gun deflection, you can raise or lower your deck gun using up or down on controller 2, to hit targets further away or targets approaching you quickly.

I do fail a few times, but the last run is WAY faster than anything I've submitted yet.

The largest vessels were always the 10,000 ton troop ships. You could max out tonnage (points) with picking them off during engagements then escaping. The 2nd player controller D-pad would adjust the up/down gun deflection and left/right binoculars.

Awesome! I requested the glitchless% category be added to speedrun.com in preparation for my own run, but it looks like you've beat me to the punch. Good for you - I'm really glad to see other people running this game. Where did you get this version of the game? What'd you use to record the run? Have you read my notes on the Sarna wiki? www.sarna.net/wiki/MechWarrior_(1989_Video_Game)#Economy If you ever come back to it and try running it again, there's a few things you could do to speed it up easily (or for anyone else interested in running this game): - In the story line, you can forget about the letter and ignore it completely - I think you might end up with a tiny bit of extra money or something but it's not enough to make a difference - You can actually type the names of planets to travel to, which is a bit faster than finding them in the menus or trying to click on them - Buy and sell whatever you can, including light mechs if that's all that's available - better to get at least a few C-bills rather than saving and loading - Buying and selling everything will almost guarantee you build up enough money in the five year limit to finish the game as well - Repairing mechs to sell isn't worth it - the time you spend doing it, you could buy a whole other mech as well, instead of netting a few extra % of their worth - In battle, look at the L/M/S letters next to weapons - they go yellow once they're in range, and blue and red when you're closer (I think the manual is wrong about being closer causing more damage though). Firing when they're black is wasting ammo/heat unless you're right on the edge of maximum range - You can switch to weapons using the number keys, so you don't have to cycle through all of them to get back to the PPC - PPCs generate huge heat and have a long reload time for the damage they do. Best strategy with a Battlemaster is to take the PPC out of the automatic weapon system, fire it manually a few times as you approach, then use AWS to cycle through all the medium-range weapons once you're in closer. Machine guns have the highest DPS of any weapon and can leg even assault mechs in seconds if you get them close enough

Hey, Karus Daedlyn here. This channel was put together by my husband and I to do out Let's Plays, but sorta fell outta use after awhile. Planning on making a separate channel later for exclusively speedrun/MechWarrior stuff. I got this version from abandonware, I used to have all these MW games as a kid but it's not easy to get working physical copies now. For this recording I used straight OBS, although I've been shifting to Streamlabs OBS recently to integrate some stuff for my Twitch channel. I have finally gotten around to reading your notes, and that helps out a lot. I knew about the difference between rich planets and poor, but I didn't know about the tier system and how it worked. I was sort of just guessing which planets were poor based on their in-game description. -Didn't know about the letter, thought it was a requirement. -I was assuming if the profit margin wasn't high enough, it wouldn't be worth the time spent traveling, but I saw you broke down the math, and that would drop time considerably. -I actually was figuring out the targeting system on the fly, I didn't remember how it worked when I was a kid. -Number key switching would be important to remember, heh, I actually had the manual out and reading some as I was playing. My ultimate goal is to run every game in the MW series. Not sure if I'll get to the 'Crescent Hawks' games or not, as they're technically not 'MechWarrior' games, and I never even owned them before. I started with MW2: Mercenaries as part of a charity stream, which took a bit over 4 hours. Then I ran MW1, then MW2, and plan is to run MW3 and 4 next. For every game that's been run before, I'm nowhere near WR, but that's okay :) Just want to complete them all first, then go back and try to optimize. Plus wanna try to garner attention to the series, MechWarrior and BattleTech have been one of my favorite franchises for as long as I can remember, right up there with Star Wars or LotR.

Yeah, I spent days figuring out the economy and the trade tiers to try and optimise that part of the run. The downside to the trading is that it's so RNG dependent - even a really optimised speedrun could vary by ten minutes depending on how many battlemasters you find. It must be possible to finish the game with other mechs - in the first final battle there's only three BMs and the warhammer, so maybe there's room to switch to a couple of warhammers or marauders. I see you also spend a bit of time on extra missions to try and train your AI guys up a bit; I've tested with a full lance of battlemasters, and even three complete novice AI lancemates didn't flee in fear, so I'm not convinced that's required for a good run either. You do have to be smart about the battle itself, I've had the best results with carefully ordering my lancemates to concentrate fire on one target at a time and backing them up when I was in range. I think the ending planet matters as well, because they all have different but preprogrammed battle scenarios. Kirchbach seems easiest, because more enemies start behind mountains and basically come at you one at a time. On Albiero, only the warhammer starts visible, but the three BMs quickly appear and swarm you, and on Radstadt all four enemies are in view and come at you simultaneously. Fortunately for a speedrun you know which planet you'll end on when you finish the story, and that only takes a couple of minutes, so resetting to try and get Kirchbach doesn't hurt too much. I think there's a perfect, random 1/3 chance to get each planet. This game is so tough to figure out how it thinks behind the scenes. Weapons stats are hard enough to find (although I've built an almost complete table over time), but stuff like what triggers the AI to do X or Y like pick a certain target or decide to flee is still buried deep in the black box. I wish we had someone interested in the game who could disassemble the executable and figure out what leads where. I've actually asked the original authors about the source code but they're pretty sure it's been lost to time. The letter feels important but it's really a red herring in the story - you can see in my any% run that I skip it. At that point in the story it's the news that gives you the next planet to fly to anyway. It would be interesting to see an experienced Let's Play of the Crescent Hawk games, but they're very different as you say, and from what I've seen the gameplay is very stilted and limited due to the low tech and relatively awful user interface they came up with at the time. so IMHO it'd be a curiousity at best, and a massive effort to figure out the game to the extent I've done with MW1 at worst. I'd love to see your MW2 Mercenaries run, would you upload it to UA-cam? I tried to view it on Twitch and it said the content was unavailable.

@@timix_au , I should be getting my MW2 video cut/edited into the Jade Falcon/Wolf halves shortly, and once that's done I'll upload all three videos. (Both clans, and MW2: Mercs) I figure most times I get in these games will get beaten rather quickly, especially by people experienced in each game. That's why my initial goal is really just to run them all, get some firsts, and build up experience in all of them. My MW2:Mercs run is the WR by default right now, but I had lots of mistakes. Got blown up several times, missed essential objectives requiring reloads, etc. Since I'm just trying to get the runs completed, I still submit, even if full of mistakes. I'd like to examine the footage, determine what worked or not, and slowly improve. Like, my MW2 clan runs are over 2 hours each, and WR is around 40 minutes. Not really worried about being number 1 yet, just want to say I did it. I know there's still some interest in MechWarrior, especially with MWO and MW5, I'd like it if a bigger channel noticed, and perhaps tried to get their viewers interested in attempting the older series for speedruns. There's not much competition now, and I'd rather be a much lower ranking but have more people playing the older games. Sort of spark interest in the mech simulator again.
