At least you knew who Nicolaus Copernicus is, which not all tourists know, well that's a matter of education - bravo. Walking around Warsaw, tourists mainly admire the architecture, but for Poles it has a different meaning knowing what happened here during World War II. Some tourists don't even realize that when looking at historic buildings they are looking at replicas because Warsaw was razed to the ground, on Hitler's orders in revenge for the Poles organizing an armed uprising against the Germans. Warsaw was reconstructed from old photos, films and even paintings. It is said that Warsaw rose like a phoenix from the ashes. A beautiful book about the Warsaw Uprising was written by the Scottish writer Norman Davies - it is worth reading because in Western Europe very little is said about it and it is often confused with the uprising in the Warsaw Jewish ghetto, it is worth reading, you will be shocked.

Many churches because Poles have been Catholics for over 1000 years, so don't be surprised that there are so many churches. Poles are ultra Catholics and even communists didn't dare to forbid the profession of faith, only in Poland you could go to church and in other communist countries churches were closed, or they were turned into museums or warehouses.

The only two major Polish cities not destroyed during WW2 were Kraków... and Lwów. Well, Poznań is nice but was destroyed only in 50%.
