Homebody Diaries | Finding comfort in sadness
The last couple of weeks, I've been accepting who I am and coming to terms to find comfort in sadness.
It's part of my personality. Instead of continuing to spend years changing who I am, I'm finding happiness in it.

I'm so glad I've been documenting my progress. This one was humbling! Record-breaking about of failed mugs but I'm so happy to report that I've been becoming a ceramic pottery beast and my mugs have been centered and symmetrical! Cool short
At least you have hard floors. I too am in my home, but have carpet. Continually wiping with damp cloth, washing my tools asap in a tub. And using a handheld vacuum cleaner as I go, keeps things reasonably clean. Happy potting
Yo that's cool
Thank you! 😊
the orignal inside out is winnie the pooh! Gosh, that takes me back to my earliest memories. What an interesting connection. I'm inspired to watch it and reconnect with my emotions!
Right! That shows a classic!
Beautiful work! It looks like your pieces might have under fired, which will lead them to look slightly matte instead of shiny and glossy. To find out whether your kiln is reaching the right temperature, I would suggest getting some witness cones which will tell you the heat work that your kiln is doing. You would want to use 3 of them, 1 at your target cone, one above and one below (ex-firing to cone 6, you use witness cones 5, 6 and 7. Cone 5 should be bent to floor of shelf, cone 6 should be bent to parallel to floor or at 90 degree angle, and cone 7 should have just a slight bend at a proper cone 6 firing). Nice job! You can also refire your pieces if they don't come out as expected but just be careful because the glaze can run and stick to the shelf.
Your eyes are correct! This was a matte glaze which I do not care for anymore. I’ve switch to a dip glossy glaze now and it’s been much preferred!
What is your emotional character? Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger, there are so many! Let me know!
Hi Charlie. I first came across your videos today when you were showing your home pottery setup, and you explained that you were a new potter. I am as well, I've been doing wheel throwing for about a year and i just started selling my pieces in September. My first thought was- girl, it's lovely to think of aesthetics when setting things up but let me tell you it's gonna get messy so fast, especially in the beginning! Until you have things down, your hands and everything else will be coated in clay and you'll have a lot of reclaim even if you don't flop. I'll subscribe to your channel and give you some tips here and there where I see it might help, if you like. First thing is that you're doing great. Wheel throwing is hard, and you will get it down eventually, but no matter how many videos of people you watch throwing on the wheel, it's not going to increase your skill, what you'll need to do is just practice practice practice. As you throw, you'll train your hands to be steadier and it will get easier. Don't be afraid to scrap once you get off center and don't try to shape just yet. Start with straight cylinders, don't rush the pulls and once you gain height remember to slow your wheel down. You got this!
I love the tips! Yes, keep them coming. A mess indeed! I get clay all over, but I keep it 'pretty' because my 'studio' lol is the main hallway to go in and out of the backyard. I will be moving soon and look forward to having a space I can get messy and just close the door so no one else will have to deal with the mess. Thank you for subscribing!
@@CharlieCage That's great news!! I look forward to seeing how it turns out! I take classes through a local community studio so I can make most of my mess there but I do my glazing at home and I also have a pottery wheel at home too. I'm hoping to get a kiln next year, we'll see. I have to get an electrician out here first. :)
I’m a self taught potter as well. I’m a year in and going strong, keep it up! Just a loving tip, maying research not using the canvas covered wood. Regular wood works just fine and can be wiped down clean, the clay doesn’t stick. The clay dust embeds and stays in the canvas fabric forever. I’m a bit paranoid about clay dust since I’ve got kids as well. 😊
Hi there! Yeah, we are clay buddies and it's like you just read my mind. I will be moving in a few months and plan to have a tabletop that is unfinished and dispose of the canvas. It's so much work to scrub and you're right...it still ends up being dusty! 🥰
Great video! The slowness at the top of the morning leading into calm productivity, the music, the angles, the pottery pieces - everything was really nice to watch!
Thank you so much Roche! That’s so good to hear ❤️
Love the diversity of the shots you captured in this vlog. Thanks for opening your home and your weekend routine to us. It's like we're doing our sundays together again!
@@jennygiao8293 I miss you tons!!
My husband must have the same problem.. wears glasses and contacts - still can't see the trail of crumbs he leaves behind!
@@jennygiao8293 we need to do a case report!! 😂
In your husbands defense he might be too tall to see the crumbs and you might just be closer to them 🤷♂️
Is that so?!? 😆
So fun to watch your process as an aspiring ceramicist myself! What is the cheese grater looking thing used for at the 7:25 minute mark?
It’s such a great hobby! It’s a diamond sander.
Thats amazing!!! 😮 i wanna tryyyy pottery too~ it always amaze me
You should give a go!!!
You are getting some really nice results. What is the name of the green glaze? It looks like wasabi.
It getting better with it! Thank you. It’s amaco celadon brush on glaze
Girl, I thought you were wearing beige gloves - turns out its a messy process :P
It really is. I’m getting better at not being as messy!! 😝
Wow, those pancakes have me craving a home made breakfast!
Right?!
Hi ! On cracked handles, better if the handle is the same or close to same thickness as the mug, shrink rate on lighter clays are challenging with handles . Vinegar instead of water can sometimes repair a cracked handle . Cheers 👍
Thanks for the tips! I'll keep working on those darn handles! 🙂
@CharlieCage to add on if they are still green, you can make a paper clay glue with slip, vinegar, and paper tissue. break up the tissue in small bits and mix it well. You can use it to fill in the broken bits of clay! Its worked well for me a few times.
@@JadaBstudio That is very insightful! Thank you for sharing this...I'll put that in my back pocket.
Way to go!
thank you! It's so much fun
Also a beginner but absolutely love it. I took some classes to make sure that I would like it as much as I thought I would. I am processing my own clay on my land and have finally accomplished a level that I am happy with. Can’t wait to learn everything! I love the historical significance of such a wonderful and practical art.
I love that for us! Processing your own clay...now that is amazing!
Did you buy a kiln without having learned pottery first? You dont have any place to take classes to learn and see if it is something you realy like more long term?
I took a few classes before purchasing one. Ultimately, it came down to not being able continue pottery without a lot of resistance if I didn’t have one. I’m almost 40 at this point and the way I feel when I do pottery feels right. Scary but I can always sell it if it doesn’t work out (used kilns in my areas sell high which is why I ended up just buying new for reliability and service and knowing that I wouldn’t lose a lot if I had to sell). I explained more about the reason behind it in this video. ua-cam.com/video/bmxfnR7B54w/v-deo.html
girl math 😂 drives my decisions everyday!! or maybe its simply a pursuit of happiness :P

I'm new to making UA-cam content as well, and wanted to stop and say I love your video!!! ❤ You gained a new subscriber! 🥰🩷
Aw! That’s so special to me. Thank you for the love.
Charlie... PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE..... ALWAYS USE A RESPIRATOR WITH A CLEAN FILTER AND SURGICAL GLOVES WHEN HANDLING GLAZE CHEMICALS. Many chemicals used to make glazes are heavy metals and / or carcinogenic ! I too prefer the dip method and mixing your own glazes becomes necessary. You look like you are off to a wonderful start. Best Wishes.
You’re absolutely correct! I’m actually a dentist and so I understand the dangers of powders and protective equipment. I started to play more with the dip glaze and I really like it! I’m excited to see where things go. Thank you for your wonderful comment.
I truly enjoyed your tour. I’m a high school ceramics, drawing, and painting teacher. Your video has inspired me to set up an ceramic studio in addition to my drawing and painting Studio. I just subscribed. I hope you will continue to post. Best wishes on your pottery journey.
Thank you so much! It was fun sharing. I’m excited for you. Having a creative space at home is the best!
Ooooh this is delightful ✨️✨️✨️✨️ congrats on your studio and yes, you are a ceramist part- time and all💖 i am new to pottery and used some of the pieces that didn’t turn out to hold seeds, votive candles and change for laundry. the rest i returned to the bucket😅 maybe paint that shelf a shade of green lighter than your walls..or orange? take care!🪄
That’s the fun part about pottery, we can always reclaim the clay! 😊 thank you for watching!
Life has no instruction manual! I love that.
Right! Let’s just dive in!
This is great Charlie keep going - proud of you girl
Thank you! I appreciate you and I will!
As a fellow beginner potter, I can see you have everything you need to get started and become successful! Because I live in an apartment, the kiln I purchased cannot be used so it's collecting dust. I pay a monthly membership and have to drive across town to have my ceramics fired. Using my pottery wheel in a small apartment can get messy and since I don't have the proper sink, I can't use it either. So I'm going to pivot and start hand building instead. Anyway, good luck on your pottery journey!
I think that’s one of the amazing things about pottery. We can adapt it to our space. I get clay on my walls all the time because of the small hallway 😆 good luck to you as well! 🙏🏾
❤
You’re my first comment! Thank you ❤️
I really enjoyed this video, Charlie! Thank you for encouraging us to be more childlike and to embrace those sides of us…💗 I too have a lot of hobbies and each one makes me so happy! One thing I really enjoy is adult coloring. It’s been a hobby of mine for almost 10 years now. It’s so therapeutic for me.
Thank you so much for sharing that with me. Adulting coloring is amazing and get to do it often with my little ones. Thank you for watching!
Way ahead of 2025 New Year's resolution or behind last year's... not sure but I'm happy with the progress. How about you?
Yeah, a familiy of my own and a space for me and mine aren´t anybody elses dreams, they are basic human needs, which have not been met for me. So feeling lost is tipping towards feeling unneeded and hopeless.
I hear you! I remember feeling so lost because I felt no one cared or needed me. I didn’t realize how much I needed myself though. Once I did, my perspective shifted but it took some time.
First time practicing properly with a drone 😮
Never to late ❤
I’m glad you agree!!
