    This may be a silly question, but what would a working format be? I'm learning to edit, literally opened Premiere Pro for the first time today. Love your videos so far they are very insightful and have given me a lot to think about.

    • @Unsplice
      @Unsplice 24 дні тому

      Glad you find the content insightful. Nota silly question at all. A lot of self taught editors don’t understand what a working format is. A working format is usually a QuickTime .mov in a ProRes codec. You’ll find a more detailed explanation in the next episode! Has that answered your question?

      @Unsplice actually I do have another question. I'm on windows and when I use media encoder to change the mp4 files into mov I can't see the video only hear the audio. Is this because I'm on windows? If so what would a working format be for windows?

    • @Unsplice
      @Unsplice 21 день тому

      Yes. You may need to download the ProRes codec if you're on windows. Or you could convert to DNxHD which is native to PC.

    FYI, Resolve Free can edit and output 4K. Collaboration in Resolve is very powerful, but I agree, fundamentally it's a small pool of editors using it for actual editing. The fun thing to keep in mind too is the Resolve is very common for dailies work too. Many projects start in Resolve, goto Premiere/Avid and come back to Resolve for grading and finishing. Personally, I haven't found too many missing editing features or tools between Premiere and Resolve (barring the interface customization and a few ai tools, and a handful of specific shortcuts). Even though "its new" vs Premiere and Avid, both ancient in the world of software, it's been around for nearly 12 years if you count when they started adding editing features for finishing needs back in 2012. Personally, I think if you learn the principles of editing from the free version of Resolve (think highschool kids) then you can learn Premiere pretty easily for work. Since, in so many ways, learning when and where to cut is so much more the real journey than what buttons to press. There is a ton of overlapping. Frankly Premiere is very simple comparatively. If you are learning editing post highschool as a post secondary student go for Premiere, you can afford it and it's worth the small investment to get started earning money as either an assistant or junior editor.

    Not gunna lie man Netflix has killed so many shows and anything promising they bring they also eventually kill. So, going on free movie websites isn't stopping anyone. I prefer streaming with full video quality however Netflix also has a liberal DEI narrative and very poor writing included with this, they actually push that is destroying intellectual properties the likes of which affected shows like The Witcher, Cowboybebop (although I thought they did a good job with Bebop) and more. So, until they become more focused on telling stories and stopping screwing over their customers/viewers (like with sharing Netflix accounts) Netflix is not showing a compelling value. I have spoken

    • @Unsplice
      @Unsplice 3 місяці тому

      You make some great points, Sasquatch. Although it's nice to see some old shows resurface, I assume they buy the rights and then scrap the shows so that no other streamer can purchase the IP. The more IP they hold, the more value the company is worth. They've stopped caring about their customers.

      Thanks @DanMillerXYZ . I'm very proud of what we're building. I don't think it's ever too early to get help understanding how much to charge, where to find work, or how to improve on each edit. I remember when I was first starting out I had so many questions about freelance finances, invoicing, contracts, showreels, who's in charge of what and tons of stuff not actually editing related. Having access to a community and expert to answer those questions would have saved me months of trial and error (not to mention the money I lost from years of undercharging)! Happy to answer any questions you have. Just drop me a mail. I'm on the other side.

    Really great points, this stuff is easy to forget about when looking for work especially as a newcomer to the industry but it's important to get properly valued for the work you do. Your point about editors needing to stick together is super important because like you said, it is too easy to see others as just competition. Always a ton we can be learning from each other.

    • @Unsplice
      @Unsplice Рік тому

      Well said! I've met many editors who consider other editors their competition (us vs us), myself included in my early days. But once I switched my mindset to us vs them, I found more and better work opportunities, and I found a tighter community of peers which makes the whole journey easier.

    Lots of great info here and did a good job of being that person to ask questions when you’re still not sure what questions to ask. Appreciate your taking the time! 👍
