Dickie's 90-Second Pedal Demos
United Kingdom
Приєднався 11 січ 2021
No waffling, no widdling, no blues-rock grimacing.
No edits, no backing tracks, no uncritical gushing.
Dickie's 90-Second Pedal Demos are quick, simple, irreverent but high-quality introductions to great pedals - both acclaimed classics and underrated gems - and how to get the best out of them.
I'm an experienced guitar player and journalist who writes reviews professionally for guitar.com, and I'm doing this for fun. The plan is to upload a new video every couple of weeks or so until I run out of pedals or get mauled to death by my cat, whichever comes first.

AllPedal Macrodose: Is there such a thing as too many filter effects?
If you've seen my demo of the EQD Spatial Delivery, this is like three of those having a brawl in a restaurant kitchen. It's a filtery fun fest!
But it did make me break my own 'no edits' rule. Why? Because it's just so complicated. If I'd kept the camera running while I changed the settings between these three sounds, the knob-twiddling would have filled a 90-second demo on its own.
So, to answer the question of the title, no, there isn't such a thing as too many filter effects - but there is such a thing as too many filter effects in a fully manual pedal (and one with hard-to-read knob markers). If this thing let you save presets, it'd be a masterpiece.
(Guitar is a Harmony Silhouette.)

Hudson Broadcast dual footswitch: The ultimate Jekyll & Hyde dirt pedal
Переглядів 3,2 тис.Місяць тому
Two-in-one overdrives are great, but they're only worth getting if you'd want to own both halves as individual pedals. I love the low-gain side of the Hudson Broadcast; I'd drink lava for the high-gain side. It's not supposed to sound like a tweed Fender Deluxe as far as I know, but… well, see what you think. The riff at the end is of course Cinnamon Girl. (Guitar is a Gordon Smith GS Deluxe Se...
Strymon Lex v2: Did you know Strymon’s most underrated pedal could do this?
Переглядів 7 тис.2 місяці тому
There's nothing remarkable about the first half of this video. But if you have the stamina to stick with a pedal demo beyond the first 55 seconds, you might be surprised by how great the Strymon Lex sounds when it's angry. For me this is two pedals in one: a pretty stereo modulation effect (like chorus but much more rich and fruity), and a slow grind that sounds like demons ripping a hole in th...
Spaceman Delta II: Harmonic tremolo that can reshape your whole sound

I thought I was happy. I had a good home, a loving family, a tremolo pedal with a harmonic mode - ua-cam.com/video/W0wvpBMQn3o/v-deo.html - and that seemed to be all I needed. But then the Spaceman Delta II came along. Harmonic tremolo is all about shifting the high and low frequencies out of phase for a more complex effect than straight loud-soft-loud-soft. But by letting you mess around with ...
Bondi Effects Sick As & Nordvang No.1 Signature: Beyond the Klon (but only a bit)

This came down to a philosophical point; you might even call it an ethical one. I've loved the Klon sound for a long time, but couldn't afford a real one (who can?) and wanted to have something more than a straight-up klone - something that had been designed, not just emulated. So here are two quality 'klone plus' options: the Bondi Effects Sick As, which adds a two-way clipping switch and sepa...
Mad Professor Double Moon: The chorus pedal for people who hate chorus

Last time I checked the Mad Professor website, the Double Moon was listed as discontinued. Huh!? Well, the campaign to have it dis-discontinued starts here. 'People who hate chorus'? Yeah, that would be me. I know that old syrupy warble is having a revival, but the association with 80s soft rock played on out-of-phase Strats by men with mullets is just too strong. This, though, is no Boss CE-2....
Walrus Audio D1 v1 vs v2: Better, worse, the same, or all of the above?
Переглядів 1,9 тис.6 місяців тому
Has the v2 of the Walrus Audio Mako Series D1 made the the original obsolete? Is it worth upgrading if you have a v1 already? The answer to both questions, predictably, is "It depends" - but watching this demo should definitely help. The D1 is a multi-mode digital delay pedal that's especially good at the sweet, soft-edged stuff. For this video I've picked three of its best sounds and matched t...

I once saw a video of Nels Cline messing with a Whammy, and it made me think maybe those things are not so daft after all… but what I love about the EHX Pitch Fork is that, while it can do all the crazy swoops (with an expression pedal), it's also capable of creating much more subtle musical textures. Well, this is a demo of - mostly - those textures. I'm particularly in love with the one you'l...

Why do I need such a sprawling epic to demonstrate the capabilities of the Great Eastern XO Variable Crossover? Red Panda Particle 2: Way more than just a glitch machine

This might be the most significant '2' in stompbox history... even though it doesn't sound any different to the '1'. I used an original Particle for the shimmery effect on my little intro jingle. It was a wondrous pedal, offering much more than choppy-uppy granular delay effects, but a tricky one to navigate. Enter the Particle 2, which lets you store presets... and that really does change ever...
EarthQuaker Devices Spatial Delivery: Lo-fi soundscaping with a funk pedal

UPDATE: Ooh, there's a new V3 that lets you save presets! Not sure how useful that really is for this pedal… but anyway, apparently the sounds are the same. Envelope pedals don't seem to be as popular with guitar players as they should be, and I think I know why. What is an envelope follower? It's a tone filter that responds to the level of the signal going into it: bright on the attack then da...
Electro-Harmonix String9: It's fun, but is it actually useful?

You might imagine I'd be annoyed that a certain well-known pedal builder and UA-camr had published a video on the Electro-Harmonix 9 Series three days before I planned to upload mine. Oooh, did you see the little fly at 29secs? The first ever cameo appearance in a 90-second demo! Anyway, the Iridium. this or the iridium using drive pedals?
I think I prefer most of my drive pedals through the ACS1 to the Iridium.
ah yes, the wibble
@@kajstoras3523 can't argue with the wibble.
Iridium sounded nearly the same on every setting, and sounded very harsh/DI. Apparently that's due to stock IRs, though, and replacing those is common.
I quite like the Vox tones in the Iridium, but don't think I'd ever use any of the others as they are.
Awesome video and helpful responses in the comments too!
@@vackrakristaller thanks, really appreciate the feedback. 🙂
That's one groovy pedal.
I'm kinda getting into that metallic phaser sound. Like Death by Audio's Disturbance
@@jeremiahbayani184 like the sound of that thing.

Cheers!
Top use of the mash button function. Too bad this reverb doesn't have a better spring reverb sound... I don't know if you can dial it to sound better, through the app... Top playing and demonstration, top job, stay strong healthy creative and blessed, much love from Greece!
Thank you!
@DickieDemos you are welcome!
But can it do spaceship sounds when you turn the time knob?
Honestly, I sold my D1 about five seconds after I got a Raster 2 (demo coming soon!) and my memory isn't clear enough to answer that with authority… but I *think* no, not really.
Have you tried to play with inside gain trimpots? I’ve tried to push them at the maximum, the sound is really good but the pedal create a significant hiss. I don’t now if it is normal…. 😕
I hadn't tried… but I have now. So, as it is in the demo, the low-gain trimpot is at minimum and the high-gain is just a tiny 1/8 turn short of maximum. (Don't know if that's the factory setting, as I bought it second-hand.) It gets even more squelchy if you turn the high-gain pot up to full, but yes, also very noisy - so I put it back to how it was before. And I don't see any benefit to cranking up the low-gain side.
At the demo settings, it is not a hissy pedal.
@ thank you very much for doing the test, it confirms me my pedal doesn’t have any problem. 🙏 I have tried different settings, my conclusion is that high gain trimpot shouldn’t exceed 3h, and the pedal keep quiet.
I like this pedal, although I must admit that I personally don't like to turn up the gain to create saturation, I prefer to use my trusty Boss OD3 and I promise you it sounds incredible.
@@DogPoool I think the Iridium gets on well with a lot of drive pedals. (The Walrus ACS1 does too.)
Turn off the cab sim mode and put it in full range! Took me a while to figure that one out.
Through an amp, I definitely prefer amp mode. But I've never tried full-range mode for DI...
I love mine. Its rowdy.
that's a good word for it!
🤘👍🏿
Not sure how you manage to make a better demo than most channels in only a minute and a half, but I'll take it!!
@@cameronnelson1735 thank you!
Sounds (and looks) great Rich! Nice playing too.
Cheers Rob! It's a proper gem.
I have the same mode knob issues. Hiss not so much.
oh, another dirt pedal
Well, at least it's two dirt pedals in one...
Correct no one will buy a multy effect unit that only use one effect at a time. Why on earth would they do that
I hope I answered that in the video? And they're still selling them after 13 years, so...
Clean tones - the ACS1 definitely won. The Marshall tones are equally bad for everyone, Simplifire slightly better than the rest. The Voxy sound is also bad for everyone. Maybe at Iridium he is the little nicer than a little more pleasant. It would be interesting to listen to a similar comparison in the mix
@@Vikkk1978 I think I broadly agree with all of that, although I do like the Vox tones of the Walrus and Strymon in some ways.
Dope video
@@LawGone1 thanks!
Can I bypass the power amp and cab sim and plug into the effects loop of my amp?
No longer have the pedal so I can't test this, but there is an FX loop, so I guess you could plug into a power amp from the send output. (There's also a cab bypass option.)
Nobody shows what it actually sounds like as a virtual capo down or up a few semitones.. I suppose it has to be polyphonic pitch-shift capable to do that?
Well, that's just a question of setting the blend control to maximum... but to be honest, even at fairly small intervals it doesn't sound great. The latency becomes noticeable, and the higher notes have a bit of a nasty sizzle.
How can I create a blank preset?
IIRC you press and hold the model knob to get the presets menu.
Sorry bro, this is a horrible review. Worst one I've seen.
Walrus wins with Fender tones for me.
@@ThePolarBeer me too!
Regarding the onscreen comment about the Neo, isn’t the Neo analog while the Lex is digital?
No, the Neo Vents are all digital - they use SHARC DSP.
The slow speed sounds better than the vent. I kind of wish I had bought this! But I have every drive known to man! lol The Lex is great!
@@alguitarchristie I sold my Vent not long after I bought this, but I might have to buy another for the fast sound. 🙄
@@DickieDemos 🤣
I feel like it's a sound that not many people will use though... too niche imo.
Fair point. But more people SHOULD use it!
hey nice pedal, nice videoo, kool sounds!!!!
Thank you!
Dickie, what is chord progression in the first 2 minutes? I'd like to play it myself.
Oh man, it's really hard to explain... have you got long fingers?! Starting position is a G sharp minor with the thumb playing the root (4th fret), ring finger and little finger on 6th fret, then the index finger on the 4th fret of the G string and middle finger on the 4th fret of the B string. This way you can leave the high E string open, and move the index finger down to the 3rd fret for the second chord. Does that make sense? The other chords are all that same basic shape with an open B string, sliding up and down the neck (B, E, F sharp, C sharp minor).
@@DickieDemos as soon as you mentioned thumb in the video I knew i should delete my comment! Really all i care about is the melody of the up and down sequence of chord sounds, so without all the fancy additions, what is the order of the straight chords. Thanks for the reply.
@@BobbyGeneric145 Haha, that might be even harder to explain! In the 'verse' part my index finger is shifting between B and B flat pretty much randomly, so that's really just two versions of one chord. Then it's B, E, F#, C#m and back to G#m, then B, F#m, A, Am.
@@DickieDemos ok ill give that a shot. Thanks!
Got it love it

No.

This one is really tempting 🤔 It certainly opens up a world of possibilities 😮 Would love a stereo version!!!
That's not a bad idea - an optional stereo mode where it sends hi and lo to separate outputs instead of mixing them back together? Hmm…
@@DickieDemos what pedal out there is comparable that does have stereo?
@@444levels9 You know what, I've just realised you CAN use this in stereo - simply by not using the returns. So you send the bottom half of the signal to one pedal, the top half to another, and then connect those pedals directly to two amps. (I'm not sure how much real-world value this has, to be honest, but it does work.)
Pretty much all of these pale compared to a real amp.
I think the ACS1 in particular is great for some things... but I also have a collection of real amps and it's not getting any smaller.
I'd use the Hecck out of it, and do some REAL Out There Sheeeeeiiiitt.
